Spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like element (SETTLE) is a rare malignant neoplasm of the thyroid, occurring predominantly in children, adolescents, and young adults. SETTLE usually presents itself as a thyroid mass, without metastases at diagnosis. It is believed to derive from branchial pouch or thymic remnant tissue showing primitive thymic differentiation. This article reports the clinical, cytological, histological and immunohistochemical features of a SETTLE in a 3-year-old girl. Microscopic exam revealed a nodular, highly cellular neoplasm displayed in the classic biphasic pattern,

We report the features in fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of thymic basaloid carcinomas. This is a rare neoplasm, of which there are only three documented in our hospital files. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fine-needle aspiration (FNA) report on basaloid carcinoma of the thymus. This is a tumor in which the FNA diagnosis is difficult and the differential diagnosis is broad. We describe the cytologic features encountered in the three cases, and immunohistochemical and ultrastructural findings so as to raise awareness of this entity in the differential diagnosis of thymic

The Second Conference on Biological and Clinical Aspects of Thymic Epithelial Tumors in Leiden, The Netherlands, 1998, set the stage for an interdisciplinary meeting of immunologists, pathologists and members of various clinical disciplines to exchange their recent findings in the field of thymus-related biology, pathology, and medicine. The contributions covered such diverse subjects as the role of transcription factors and cytokines in the development of the thymic microenvironment, thymic T, B and NK cell development, the pathogenesis of myasthenia gravis and other thymoma-associated autoim

Mice bearing Ehrlich ascites tumors and challenged with sheep erythrocytes produced fewer plaque-forming cells than did normal mice. At the same time the immunosuppression developed, the number of T lymphocytes in the thymus and spleen were reduced significantly. In the spleen, the number of B lymphocytes remained constant during carcinogenesis, whereas that of the macrophages increased significantly, as compared to the controls. In this paper, we demonstrated that the mechanism responsible for thymus and spleen depletion of theta antigen-bearing cells had to be ascribed to fewer T-lymphocyte

Poorly differentiated non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma of the thymus, also known as lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma, is a rare primary malignant neoplasm of thymic origin. The mainstay of treatment for these tumors is surgical and they tend to respond poorly to chemotherapy. The checkpoint programmed cell death ligand-1 protein (PD-L1) bound to its receptor (PD-1) has been demonstrated to be an important therapeutic target for many different tumors. Expression of PD-L1/PD-1 in lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the thymus may indicate that these tumors are potential targets for inhib

AIM: Since World Health Organization (WHO) histologic typing of tumors of the thymus publication in 1999 only a few studies correlated this classification with the clinical features of the patients. We present the results of a retrospective analysis on patients, operated on for a thymoma, whose specimens were available, to compare the WHO thymoma histologic classification to the clinical behavior of the tumors.
METHODS: The specimens of 69 patients, who underwent surgical treatment between 1983 and 1998, were analyzed, comparing the clinical features of the patients and the hystological typin

Thymoma is an epithelial neoplasm of the thymus, which commonly lies in the anterior mediastinum. Unusually it can be found in other locations as well. Ectopic thymoma rarely presents as an intrathoracic tumor. We report a case of ectopic thymoma presenting as a giant right intrathoracic tumor, the patient was 51-year-old, and who was presented with heaviness in chest and breathlessness. Detailed investigation including chest computed tomography scan revealed a well-defined large solid tumor in the right thoracic cavity, in this case, immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated a thymome AB. We report a rare case of venous hemangioma (VH) of the anterior mediastinum in a 56-year-old man admitted to our hospital because of hematemesis. Systemic examinations were performed and chest computer tomography (CT) revealed a 1.5-cm sized small nodule with contrast enhancement in the thymus. Both CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suggested a solid tumor such as a thymoma or neurogenic tumor rather than a vascular neoplasm. A partial thymectomy including this nodule by video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) was performed. Histological examination showed VH. There was no recurrence with

A study of 15 cases of carcinoid tumor of the thymus, diagnosed and treated at the Mayo Clinic, revealed histopathologic features of the neoplasm that might cause it to be confused with other mediastinal tumors, both primary and secondary. The tumor was associated with ectopic ACTH production in six patients, of whom five had Cushing's syndrome. Metastasis, which occurred in 11 patients (73%), was delayed for as long as 8 years after initial diagnosis. Eleven patients underwent surgical resection of their primary thymic neoplasms, and nine of these received postoperative radiotherapy or chemot

Thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) are extremely rare and represent the most frequent tumors of the anterior mediastinum originating from epithelial cells in the thymus. Thymic epithelial tumors include thymomas (TM), thymic carcinomas (TC) and thymic neuroendocrine neoplasms (TNEN). Thymomas are the most predominant and are associated with autoimmune diseases. The available data suggests that the different histological subtypes have specific molecular alterations. Thymic carcinoma shows recurrent gene mutations, but further investigations are needed to understand the role of those mutations in t

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are a diverse group of tumors arising throughout the body with a common origin from neuroendocrine cells. Well-differentiated NENs, also known as neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), are generally indolent and are often found incidentally, while poorly differentiated tumors are more aggressive. Carcinoid tumors are NETs arising from the gastrointestinal tract and less commonly from the lungs, thymus, and kidneys. NETs in the mesentery arise from metastasis from primary tumor, and carcinoid syndrome in this setting results from concomitant metastasis to the liver. Prima

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) are usually slow-growing neoplasms, which arise in the gastrointestinal tract, endocrine pancreas, lungs or thymus. The majority are malignant. The treatment of patients with metastatic disease consists of biotherapy with alpha-interferon and somatostatin analogues, various chemotherapy combinations or liver embolization.
OBJECTIVE: To review and discuss new treatments for patients with metastatic NETs.
METHOD: Review of the published literature during the last 5 years on treatment of patients with NETs.
RESULTS/CONCLUSION: Several new drugs with va

HIV infection in humans occurs primarily by mucosal infection during unprotected sexual activity or inoculation during intravenous drug use. HIV infection causes a progressive deterioration of protective cell-medicated immunity, specifically due the destruction of thymus-derived lymphocytes, called T-cell, during viral replication. Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) reduces HIV viral replication and improves immune function against opportunistic infections, but it does not offer a cure for disease. Dental professionals should be able to recognize those with HIV infection by identifyi

Anterior mediastinal hemangiomas are very rare neoplasms in mediastinal tumors. A 58-year-old woman was revealed to have a mass measuring 4 x 3 cm in size in the anterior mediastinum with calcification on computed tomography. It was initially suspected to be a thymoma. We performed tumor extirpation in November 1998. The tumor was close to the thymus and slightly adhered to the superior vena cava, ascending aorta and right phrenic nerve, however, it did not invade any surrounding organs. Histopathologically, it was diagnosed to be a venous type hemangioma composed of vessels covered by smooth

Carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation is a malignant, extremely rare neoplasm that arises in the thyroid gland or neighboring neck soft tissue and closely resembles thymic carcinoma. Long-term survival is possible if the disease is diagnosed early and is completely resected, followed by radical dose radiotherapy. We present the case report of a 65-year-old man who presented with neck mass and neck pain that increase with intensity with cough. He was evaluated by thyroid ultrasound, which showed an echogenic nodule. Baseline PET/CT imaging revealed a very hypermetabolic lesion in the ri

Here we report on a 55-year-old man with an abnormal anterior mediastinal shadow and multiple nodules in the thymus, which increased in size over a period of 15 months. He was diagnosed with early prostatic cancer, and treated with chemotherapy. Although no definite preoperative diagnosis was obtained, surgery was performed because of the possibility of malignant neoplasm or metastasis. Extended thymectomy was performed and pathological examination revealed that the nodules were remnant thymic tissue and not malignant lesions. Although the cause of this unusual remnant thymic tissue remains un

Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) are innate sentinels that produce type I interferons (IFN-I) during infection. Here, we asked how developmental stage and tissue context shape human pDC transcriptional states. Single-cell RNA sequencing of pDCs from blood, thymus, lymph nodes, and tonsils across fetal, infant, and pediatric stages revealed tissue-enriched programs, including IFN-I-imprinted pDCs in the thymus, NF-κB-imprinted pDCs in tonsils, and resting pDCs in blood and lymph nodes. Across tissues, we identified a pDC subset characterized by prostaglandin D2 production and dopamine respon

The mediastinum contains vital vascular and nonvascular structures and organs, and a wide variety of abnormalities may arise from this region of the thorax. Although mediastinal masses may be initially detected on chest radiography, cross-sectional imaging plays an important role in the identification and evaluation of mediastinal lesions, enabling the formulation of focused differential diagnoses and ultimately guiding management. Computed tomography (CT) is considered the imaging modality of choice for evaluating most mediastinal masses; however, the role of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging c

The thymus is an endocrine organ. A unified, physiological concept of humoral regulation of the immune response emerged in the last three decades. The thymus is the primary major site of production of immunocompetent T-lymphocytes from their haematopoietic stem cells. The thymus provides a superior humoral microenvironment for the development of immunocompetent T-lymphocytes. Although yolk sac derived pre-T stem cells enter the thymus using a homing receptor, the immigration process requires also secretion of a peptide, called thymotaxin by the cells of the reticulo-epithelial (RE) network. OBJECTIVES: Neuroendocrine differentiation in carcinomas of the nonneuroendocrine type has been observed in various organ systems. Awareness of this phenomenon is important since such tumors need to be separated from true neuroendocrine neoplasms because of therapeutic and prognostic consequences. To investigate this occurrence in thymic carcinomas, 27 cases of different histologies were analyzed using neuroendocrine immunohistochemical markers.
METHODS: Twenty-seven conventional thymic carcinomas from thymectomies were studied immunohistochemically with antibodies directed against synaptophy
