BACKGROUND: Due to the limited availability of ketamine in Mexico, alternative anaesthetic protocols for the immobilisation of big cats such as tigers (Panthera tigris ssp.) need to be considered. The evolutionary history of elusive organisms can be characterized through genomic analyses, which have the power to reveal previously unknown taxa even in groups assumed to be well studied, such as cats. BACKGROUND: Mitral valve surgery can be challenging for patients with mitral annular calcification (MAC). The prevalence of MAC in patients who undergo mitral valve replacement is 19.9%. The treatment options for MAC include complete decalcification and annular reconstruction with valve repair/replacement or performing a surgical valve repair or replacement without decalcification, accepting the risk of paravalvular leak. We describe three cases of mitral valve prolapse with posterior annular calcification, which were repaired using a unique technique that does not require decalcification.

We aimed to describe the characteristics, clinical course, management and outcome of patients presenting to Perth teaching hospitals after envenoming by Tiger snakes. We undertook a chart review from six Perth teaching hospitals over a 16 year period from 1990 to 2005. Data were collected by a trained investigator using a preformatted data abstraction tool.
