Clinical Consequences of Delayed Treatment for Tinea Capitis (Ringworm of the Scalp): A Case Report.

A 6-year-old Hispanic patient presented with a 1-month history of pruritic patches on her scalp, characterized by hair loss, black dots, and … n from the lesions, revealing the presence of Trichophyton tonsurans, which led to the diagnosis of tinea capitis (ringworm of the scalp) with kerion formation. In addition, multiple nits and adult lice characteristic of Pediculus humanus capitis were observed. A 6-week course of griseofulvin, a 1-week course of permethrin solution, and a 5-day course of oral p …

Tinea capitis in newborns: Report of a case and review of the literature with a focus on treatment modalities.

Tinea capitis is a common disease in children but rare in newborns younger than 1 month of age. Only 29 cases of tinea capitis in newborns have been described in indexed literature from 1990 until now. While antifungal agents can be used topically and systemically, systemic antifungal therapy is generally accepted as the treatment of choice for tinea capitis due to limited penetration of topical agents into the hair follicle. However, there is a lack of data on the use of systemic antifungal agents in newborns, and there are reports of successful treatment of tinea capitis in newborns using on…

Recent updates in oral terbinafine: its use in onychomycosis and tinea capitis in the US.

Onychomycosis and tinea capitis are prevalent fungal diseases that are difficult to cure and usually require systemic treatment. Onychomycosis has high recurrence rates and can significantly affect a patient's quality of life. Oral terbinafine has been approved for onychomycosis for 20 years in Europe and 15 years in the United States. Over these past 20 years, numerous studies show that oral terbinafine is a safe and efficacious treatment for onychomycosis. More recently, oral terbinafine also has been approved for tinea capitis. Once difficult to treat, terbinafine has revolutionised treatme…

A randomized controlled trial assessing the efficacy of fluconazole in the treatment of pediatric tinea capitis.

BACKGROUND: Griseofulvin is considered first-line therapy for tinea capitis, and the Physician's Desk Reference currently recommends 11 mg/kg per day microsize formulation for use in children. Diverse selective pressures have resulted in waning clinical efficacy of griseofulvin, such that higher doses and longer courses of treatment are required. These events have prompted the search for therapeutic alternatives. Fluconazole is one such treatment option, and a variety of studies using this drug have shown promise in the treatment of pediatric tinea capitis. OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the …

A reanalysis of thyroid neoplasms in the Israeli tinea capitis study accounting for dose uncertainties.

In the 1940s and 1950s, children in Israel were treated for tinea capitis by irradiation to the scalp to induce epilation. Follow-up studies of these patients and of other radiation- exposed populations show an increased risk of malignant and benign thyroid tumors. Those analyses, however, assume that thyroid dose for individuals is estimated precisely without error. Failure to account for uncertainties in dosimetry may affect standard errors and bias dose-response estimates. For the Israeli tinea capitis study, we discuss sources of uncertainties and adjust dosimetry for uncertainties in the …

[Identification of geophilic and zoophilic dermatophytes in siblings with tinea capitis. A pathogenic factor or contamination?].

Two siblings of African origin presented with multiple scaling patches and alopecia on the scalp four weeks after returning from a vacation in Eritrea. Direct KOH examination revealed fungal elements; Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton terrestre were identified in the fungal culture. We discuss the putative pathogenic role of both microorganisms in causing disease. Although infection with Microsporum canis currently accounts for almost fifty percent of all cases of tinea capitis in Germany, other fungi have gained importance due to tourism and increasing migration.

Tinea capitis in the form of concentric rings in an HIV positive adult on antiretroviral treatment.

Dermatophyte infection may present in the form of concentric rings caused by Trichophyton concentricum, known as Tinea Imbricata. In immunosuppressed patients, there are reports of lesions in the form of concentric rings caused by dermatophytes other than Trichophyton concentricum too, mostly by Trichophyton tonsurans, known as Tinea indesiciva or Tinea pseudoimbricata. We report a case of tinea capitis in a HIV-positive adult woman on antiretroviral therapy, who presented with concentric rings of papules and pustules with slight scaling on the scalp along with diffuse thinning of hair. Both P…

[Tinea capitis and corporis caused by Trichophyton soudanense in an immigrant family from Africa].

HISTORY AND FINDINGS: Several weeks before coming to Germany the two daughters (aged 3 and 6 years) of a family from Togo had developed desquamating skin changes over the hairy scalp. These had then spread to the trunk and limbs. The 8-weeks-old son also had discrete lesions on the hairy scalp and neck. In all of them these lesions had then spread and begun to itch markedly. When first seen as out-patients the father was free of symptoms, but the other members of the family had multiple, sharply circumscribed, partly confluent, dry and desquamating lesions, about 2-4 cm in diameter, with areas

Diversity of ITS genotypes in Trichophyton mentagrophytes species complex isolates causing tinea corporis and tinea capitis: a multicenter study in France.

The Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex currently comprises three species (T. mentagrophytes, T. interdigitale, and T. indotineae) and exhibits substantial diversity in internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region sequences. Within this complex, Trichophyton indotineae and T. mentagrophytes ITS genotype VII have recently emerged as important public health concerns. The aim of the study was to describe the diversity of species and ITS genotypes among human clinical isolates belonging to the T. mentagrophytes complex recovered from glabrous skin and scalp samples in France. All isolates belonging to

New Epidemiological Outcomes in Anthropophilic tinea capitis, a Case Series Study in Northwestern Spain.

Although zoophilic dermatophytes remain the predominant cause of tinea capitis in Spain, an increase due to anthropophilic species has been reported. We report a retrospective observational study that included twenty-four children, who were diagnosed with tinea capitis due to anthropophilic species between 2004 and 2019. 75% of the patients were males with a mean age of 4,88 years. We observed 83,3% of cases from Africa, 4,2% from South America and 12,5% from Spain. Clinically, 70,8% of the patients presented scaly patches and non-scaring alopecia. Trichophyton soudanense was the main dermatop…

[Tinea capitis and onychomycosis due to Trichophyton soudanense : Successful treatment with fluconazole-literature review].

Two African girls who moved to Germany only 4 weeks ago presented to the dermatological office with itchy and scaling skin lesions of the scalp and the thighs. The entire scalp of both girls was affected by a white, dry dandruff and a squamous crust. Dry centrifugal spreading erythematosquamous lesions were found on the thighs. The surface of the left thumbnail of the younger girl was whitish. The Blancophor® preparations which were performed under the suspicion of a tinea capitis et corporis and onychomycosis from skin scrapings of the scalp and the thighs, and from the thumbnail of the young…

Genetic alterations in thyroid tumors from patients irradiated in childhood for tinea capitis treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to ionizing radiation at young age is the strongest risk factor for the occurrence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). RET/PTC rearrangements are the most frequent genetic alterations associated with radiation-induced PTC, whereas BRAF and RAS mutations and PAX8-PPARG rearrangement have been associated with sporadic PTC. We decided to search for such genetic alterations in PTCs of patients subjected in childhood to scalp irradiation. DESIGN: We studied 67 thyroid tumors from 49 individuals irradiated in childhood for tinea capitis scalp epilation: 36 malignant (12 cases …

Comprehensive Review of Tinea Capitis in Adults: Epidemiology, Risk Factors, Clinical Presentations, and Management.

Tinea capitis is a fungal infection of the scalp and hair caused by dermatophyte molds, that most often affects children and may also affect adults. Previous estimates suggest that between 3% and 11% of all tinea capitis cases worldwide occur in adults, although updated epidemiological studies are needed to reassess the prevalence of tinea capitis in adult populations specifically. Postmenopausal adult women are most often affected by tinea capitis, with African American or Black women particularly at risk. Adults who experience crowded living conditions, who live in close proximity to animals…

Seborrheic dermatitis-like adult tinea capitis due to Trichophyton rubrum in an elderly man.

Adult tinea capitis is often neglected and misdiagnosed, especially in men. We herein reported an older man with seborrheic dermatitis-like tinea capitis caused by Trichophyton rubrum to raise awareness of the disease. Scale and alopecia were the critical diagnostic clues in this patient. Given the previous presence of tinea pedis and onychomycosis, relevant mycological examinations were promptly performed, and antifungal therapy, as well as patient education, were effectively administered.
