A study of human jaw movements deduced from scratches on occlusal wear facets.

In a previous investigation, scratches on tooth wear facets provided information about functional movements of the mandible in the occlusal range. Depending on the type of facet observed, two or three main directions were found. The aim now was to answer two questions: (1) how long does it take for a newly formed scratch to disappear? and (2) do the observed orientations of the scratches change over a long period of time? Eleven wear facets from lower first molars were analysed in four subjects with good natural dentition. Scratches recorded on cellulose replicas were observed under an interfe

Cervical abrasion in relation to toothbrushing and periodontal health.

Cervical abrasion and some factors related to oral hygiene habits and periodontal health were investigated in 250 subjects aged 21-60 yr. The subjects were considered dentally aware since they had visited their dentist on a regular basis over the past several years. A high occurrence rate of cervical abrasion was noted with 85% of subjects exhibiting at least one superficial lesion. Manifest or deep lesions, although less common, were present in 22% of subjects. Both prevalence and severity increased with age. The severity expressed as the mean number of lesions was 7.3 for the total sample. I

Role of attrition and occlusal contact in the physiology of the rat incisor: XL Kinetics of inner enamel epithelium during severely impeded eruption.

Under conditions of high impediment, the rate of eruption of the rat incisor decreases considerably as does the rate of cell production of the inner enamel epithelium (IEE). The latter is acomplished by a decrease in the size of the proliferative compartment and an increase in the generation time. A linear relation exists between IEE cell production and tooth eruption, and cell production can be estimated from eruption measurements.

Biomechanically-induced dental disease.

Malocclusion, as an etiological agent in dental disease, is among the most controversial subjects in dentistry. Bruxism has been blamed on stress and many other nondental factors. A biomechanical mechanism that serves as a contributing factor to stimulate tooth clenching and grinding is defined and used to identify the 12 common dental symptoms caused by tooth clenching and grinding. A method is proposed through which the practitioner can link the observable dental signs with the biomechanical factors for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, preferably at an early stage before the dam

Relative abrasive potential of silica-based conventional and tablet dentifrices on enamel and dentin.

OBJECTIVES: This in vitro study aimed to investigate the toothbrushing wear on both enamel and dentin surfaces of reference and commercially available dentifrices. METHODS: Bovine enamel and dentin blocks were initially polished and embedded within a resin composite in square shapes (10×8×6 mm3). Employing toothbrushes equipped with nylon bristles, a toothbrushing machine was utilized, subjecting dentin specimens (n = 36) to 500 brush cycles and enamel samples to 5000 brush cycles (n = 36). Before and after the brushing simulation (2.45-N, 180 strokes per minute), an advanced contact profilom

Paleoepidemiology of a central California prehistoric population from CA-Ala-329: dental disease.

Ala-329 is a prehistoric central California site located on the southeastern margin of San Francisco Bay, dating from approximately 500 AD up to pre-European contact. A large earth mound, Ala-329, has yielded many well preserved burials, approximately 300 of which are included in this study. The most common pathological lesions seen in this population are in the dentition. Advanced attrition is pervasive, affecting all individuals with teeth in occlusion for 2 years or more. Deciduous teeth are involved even in very young children and often show severe wear before replacement. In the permanent

The toothbrush and gingival traumatic injury.

This paper explores, by means of clinical observation, toothbrush misuse and its relationship to gingival recession/clefting. The morphology of the lesions created is correlated with the vigor, duration, frequency and direction of the toothbrush abuse. In addition, histologic observations of biopsied tissue from different types of clefts and recessions are used as a basis for discussion of the possible pathogenesis of this type of lesion.

Methods for Assessing and Measuring Tooth Wear-Applications in Clinical Research and a Comparison of the Basic Erosive Wear Examination, Tooth Wear Index and Tooth Wear Evaluation System Version 2.0.

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear is an increasing concern, particularly among younger individuals, driven by lifestyle and dietary changes as well as by bruxism. This condition, including attrition, abrasion and erosion, can result in sensitivity, aesthetic decline and functional impairment. Although dental caries prevention has improved, tooth wear remains a complex, multifactorial problem requiring early detection and effective management. OBJECTIVES: This paper is a literature survey that provides an overview and compares three diagnostic systems for tooth wear assessment-the Smith and Knight Index

An adolescent female Neandertal mandible from Montgaudier Cave, Charente, France.

In 1974, an incomplete human mandible was discovered in the site of Montgaudier Cave, along the Tardoire (Charente), France. The mandible was found in association with stone tools and animal bones in geological deposits referable to the very end of the Middle Pleistocene or the beginning of the Upper Pleistocene. The mandible preserves much of the anterior part of the body and three permanent teeth: left lateral incisor, canine and first molar. Estimates based on tooth eruption of modern humans, as well as occlusal wear and root development, suggest an age at death of between 12.5 and 14.5 yea

Continuing tooth eruption and alveolar crest height in an eighteenth-century population from Spitalfields, east London.

Earlier studies on dried skulls have shown that continuing eruption occurs throughout life to an extent which appears to compensate for occlusal attrition. Some investigators have interpreted the increasing distance between the tooth cervical margin and the alveolar crest as an indication of horizontal bone loss due to chronic inflammatory periodontal disease. In order to determine whether continuing eruption occurs in the absence of attrition, measurements were made on the jaws of an eighteenth-century population whose tooth wear had been minimal. Horizontal bone loss at the alveolar margin w

[The respective roles of occlusal abrasion and bacterial plaque in the etiology of alveolar lysis in periodontitis in hamsters].

This study was designed to determine the respective roles of occlusal attrition and subsequent tooth egression, and bacterial plaque accumulation on bone loss (or radicular denudation) during hamster periodontitis. Seventy young male animals were separated into 7 groups. Occlusal attrition was compared on 3 different diets (standard in pellet form, standard in powder form, and Keyes 2000 in powder form), thought to have different abrasiveness. The role of bacterial plaque wad evidenced by inhibiting it with Penicillin V in animals fed the same 3 diets. Compared to animals killed at the beginni

Risk factors for developing tooth sensitivity and gingival irritation associated with nightguard vital bleaching.

The purpose of this study was to determine risk factors in the development of tooth sensitivity and gingival irritation associated with the nightguard vital bleaching technique. The potential risk factors evaluated (sex, age, reported allergy, whitening solution, number of times the solution was changed daily [its usage pattern], and dental arch) were collected from the daily log form turned in by each of the 64 participants after completion of the 6-week lightening process. Also evaluated for each participant, from color slides, were tooth characteristics such as gingival recession, defective

Mandible microwear texture analysis of crickets raised on diets of different abrasiveness reveals universality of diet-induced wear.

Animals have evolved diverse comminuting tools. While vertebrates possess mineralized teeth, insect mandibles often bear metal-inclusion-hardened serrated cusps. Microscopic dental enamel wear (microwear) is known to be caused by contact with ingesta. To test if insect mandible microwear is also diet-dependent, we kept newly moulted adult two-spotted crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus) for four weeks on alfalfa-based rodent pellets with and without added mineral abrasives (loess, quartz, volcanic ash). Six crickets per diet were examined after 1, 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. All diets induced progress

Accelerated eruption of rat lower incisor. Relationship between impeded and unimpeded eruption rates, rate of attrition, tooth length, and production of dentin and enamel.

The present investigation studies the effects of persistently cutting one lower rat incisor out of occlusion. Within four days, the rate of eruption of the cut (unimpeded) incisor increased to 216% and that of the uncut (impeded) contralateral to 136% of the baseline rate. While the former remained high, the latter decreased gradually to about 90% within three weeks. The rate of attrition of the impeded incisor increased to 233% of the baseline rate within two days, then fell abruptly, and remained at a slightly lower level than the rate of eruption. Accordingly, the length of the erupted part
