Teeth segmentation of dental periapical radiographs based on local singularity analysis.

Teeth segmentation for periapical raidographs is one of the most critical tasks for effective periapical lesion or periodontitis detection, as both types of anomalies usually occur around tooth boundaries and dental radiographs are often subject to noise, low contrast, and uneven illumination. In this paper, we propose an effective scheme to segment each tooth in periapical radiographs. The method consists of four stages: image enhancement using adaptive power law transformation, local singularity analysis using Hölder exponent, tooth recognition using Otsu's thresholding and connected compone

Microapical surgery of a periapical cyst caused by apical ramification: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: The destruction of tooth apical bone mainly comes from odontogenic apical cysts caused by pulp necrosis, chronic inflammation, or trauma. Some affected teeth can be cured by modern root canal treatment or non-surgical retreatment, but some affected teeth do not heal after treatment. Apical surgery should be considered when root canal therapy has failed, root canal retreatment through the crown channel is difficult, or true cysts are present. This article explores the use of microapical surgery to treat a periapical cyst caused by apical ramification, emphasizing a minimal surgical

Transient apical breakdown during orthodontic incisor intrusion treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: a case report.

Transient apical breakdown (TAB) may occur during pulp repair after dental traumatic injury, including orthodontic force. Herein, we describe TAB in the maxillary right central incisor of a 24-year-old woman during orthodontic treatment for a severe gummy smile. Eight months after initiating intrusion of the maxillary anterior teeth using temporary anchorage devices, the maxillary right central incisor showed discoloration and was non-responsive to electric pulp tests. The orthodontic force on the maxillary anterior teeth was immediately removed, and loxoprofen sodium, a non-steroidal anti-inf

Influence of root shape on canal complexity at the mandibular molar apical surgical resection level: A micro-CT study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the aspect ratios of mandibular molar roots at the apical 3-mm level and their root canal complexity. DESIGN: This study used micro-CT imaging to analyze 163 two-rooted mandibular molars. The aspect ratios of the roots at the apical 3-mm level were categorized as "< 2.75" or "≥ 2.75" (mesial) and "< 1.75" or "≥ 1.75" (distal). A two-dimensional (2D) analysis focused on four apical axial cross-section levels to determine the presence of main and accessory canals and isthmus. Additionally, a three-dimensional (3D) assessment o

Sweet tooth: DNA profiling of a cranium from an isolated retained root fragment.

Sampling of healthy multi-rooted teeth is recommended for the genetic identification of human skeletal remains. However, this may not always be possible, as in the reported case consisting of an isolated human cranium found in an aggregate crushing and processing plant in Piedmont, Northwest Italy. The cranium displayed significant weathering, suggesting a post-mortem interval of several years, and was edentulous with the exception of the apical root fragment of the upper left canine, consequence of an antemortem horizontal fracture. Prolonged decalcification of the root fragment followed by p

Replantation of an avulsed tooth after one day of storage in adverse extraoral dry conditions: Acceptable outcome after a 10-year follow-up.

This article reports a clinical case of a 10-year-old boy who sustained an avulsion of the maxillary right central incisor. The avulsed tooth was kept in adverse extraoral dry conditions for 26 hours from the moment of trauma until its replantation. Treatment guidelines for avulsed mature permanent teeth with closed apex were only partially followed. However, the clinical and radiographic findings after 10 years revealed acceptable functional outcome, in spite of ankylosis and root resorption of the replanted tooth, which was eventually treated cosmetically.

Influence of Embedding Medium on iPex Electronic Apex Locator Accuracy: An Ex Vivo Comparative Study Using Alginate, Saline, and Gelatin Models.

AIM: Accurate working length determination during root canal treatment is essential for achieving successful outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of embedding medium on the accuracy of iPex electronic apex locator (EAL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-one extracted single-rooted teeth were decoronated and coronally flared with Gates-Glidden burs. Actual canal length (ACL) was obtained by introducing a size 8 K-file until its tip reached the most coronal border of the apical foramen. This step was performed thrice and then averaged. Deducting 0.5 mm from the ACL provided the working

Assessment of root resorption and root shape: periapical vs panoramic films.

A radiographic examination is an essential part of the diagnostic process in orthodontics. However, what radiographs are needed to properly evaluate root shape and position? Most clinicians order panoramic or periapical radiographs in addition to the cephalometric radiograph. The purpose of this study was to find out whether one type of film is more accurate than the other in the pretreatment evaluation of root shape and the posttreatment computation of apical root resorption. Pretreatment and posttreatment panoramic films and full-mouth periapical films from 42 patients who completed fixed or

Endodontic treatment of dens invaginatus: a 5-year follow-up.

Dens invaginatus is an anomaly of the tooth formation of embryonic origin that presents itself in several morphologic types. The complex anatomy of these teeth makes nonsurgical endodontic treatment complex and more so when its apex is immature. The 2 cases reported illustrate the nonsurgical endodontic management of a dens invaginatus type II and type III with an immature apex and periapical lesions, in which mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) in one case, and calcium hydroxide in the other one, were the materials used. A 5-year follow-up of both cases shows a complete periapical healing with b

Transient apical breakdown and its relationship with orthodontic forces: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Transient apical breakdown (TAB) caused by orthodontic treatment is a reversible resorptive process in which the apex of a tooth shows some radiographic evidence of resorption and the crown may display some discoloration. It usually requires no treatment other than monitoring and elimination of the orthodontic forces applied to the tooth. METHODS: This report describes the case of a 48-year-old man patient who was referred to the department of endodontics for evaluation of some discoloration of his upper right central incisor, which was undergoing orthodontic treatment. Fused teeth: a review of the treatment options.

Fused/geminated teeth may cause esthetic, spacing, periodontal, eruption and caries problems. The present study describes two clinical cases of similar dental fusion and compromises different and individualized treatment methods based on the proper treatment needs of a patient. In the first case the fused tooth was separated and the supernumerary tooth was extracted intraorally. In the second case, due to the union structure of a fused tooth up to the apex, extraction and extraoral separation was considered a better alternative than the separation of the fused tooth intraorally. Clinical and r

Unusual presentation of 'u-shaped' impacted maxillary central incisor with intranasal root: successful surgical management.

BACKGROUND: Dilacerations is a tooth deformity characterized by an angulation between crown and root causing non-eruption of the tooth. It generally occurs following trauma to the deciduous dentition apices of which lie close to the permanent tooth buds. According to Neville, maxillary and mandibular incisors contribute only approximately to 1% of the incidence of dilacerated teeth. CASE DETAILS: A 15 year old male patient reported with chief complaint of missing anterior teeth in the left side of maxillary arch. Radiographic evaluation showed impacted maxillary left central incisor. The radi

The fusion of three primary incisors: report of case.

The occurrence of a fusion of three primary incisors is rare. A two-year-old Japanese girl was brought to the pediatric dental outpatient clinic, Tokyo Dental College, to receive a caries-prevention treatment. The fused tooth consisted of the maxillary primary central incisors and right maxillary lateral incisor. Primary left lateral incisor erupted normally and the other primary teeth were erupted. The radicular pulp chambers were fused into one for three fourths of the length from the apex, and only one root. The hair and skin of the patient appeared normal and no systemic abnormality or con
