Workplace violence and risk factors for PTSD among psychiatric nurses: Systematic review and directions for future research and practice.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Trauma among psychiatric nurses and other healthcare workers is related to workplace violence, but other risk factors may also contribute, including those occurring before, during or after workplace violence. WHAT DOES THIS PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Most previously identified PTSD risk factors were not tested or supported in research with psychiatric nurses, although there is promising evidence for risk factors including severe or injurious assault, cumulative exposure, burnout, and other worker characteristics. We identify directions for research needed

Reframing Intimate Partner Violence Response Through a BE-KNOW-DO Praxis: Integrating Evidence-Based Practices, Culturally Relevant Frameworks, and Adaptive Leadership.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) continues to be inconsistently identified, documented, and referred within healthcare settings, reflecting misalignments in clinicians' beliefs, knowledge, and clinical actions. AIM: This brief report evaluates the BE-KNOW-DO praxis model as a mechanism‑based framework for clarifying how these multilevel barriers shape forensic‑nursing response and for identifying opportunities to strengthen culturally responsive, trauma‑informed practice. METHODS: A convergent integrative approach synthesized quantitative findings from prior mixed‑methods research

Assessment and management of carotid artery trauma associated with mild head injury.

Management of patients with trauma to the central nervous system is a challenge for the neuroscience nurse. When trauma to the carotid artery is present, the management of closed head injury becomes even more complex. Although the incidence of carotid artery dissection is small, the risks of morbidity and mortality are high. This article discusses the mechanism of injury, associated symptoms, and theories of management for victims of carotid artery injury associated with blunt craniocervical trauma. New assessment considerations for nursing diagnosis and intervention are provided.

[Application of Trauma-Informed Care in a Patient With Schizophrenia and Childhood Trauma].

This article presents a case study on the application of trauma-informed care on a male patient with schizophrenia and a history of childhood trauma. The nursing process was designed using the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration framework. For this case study, the "4R" core assumptions were transposed into five actionable principles (safety, trustworthiness, collaboration, empowerment, and choice), which guided all of the provided interventions. From July 14 to August 7, 2025, the nursing care focused on promoting psychological and emotional safety, facilitating the co-re

Re-emergence of posttraumatic stress disorder nightmares with nursing home admission: treatment with prazosin.

Seniors with a history of emotional trauma decades earlier can experience a recurrence of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms when transitioning to a nursing home. We present the case of an 86-year-old male Holocaust survivor admitted to a nursing home for physical therapy and rehabilitation 6 weeks after the death of his wife; the patient was expressing a persistent death wish. Despite the multiple risk factors for depression, his distress was specifically related to the reemergence of nightly posttraumatic nightmares. Over the course of 1 week of treatment with 1 mg prazosin at bedtime, h

The conceptualization, measurement, and validation of transient mechanical birth trauma.

An index of transient mechanical birth trauma (TMBT), consisting of the presence or absence of molding, cephalohematoma, subconjunctival hemorrhage, body bruising, facial bruising, petechiae, forceps marks, diminished arm movements, and sensitivity to sudden position changes, was measured on a convenience sample of 196 healthy newborns. Six dimensions of the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS) and other newborn measures also were assessed. Vaginally delivered newborns had more TMBT than those delivered by cesarean section and of newborns delivered vaginally, macrosomics had more TMBT t

Hypovolemic shock: an overview.

Resuscitation of major trauma victims suffering from shock remains a challenge for trauma systems and trauma centers. Rapid identification, and ensuring correct, aggressive treatment, are necessary for patient survival. This article discusses shock encountered in trauma victims: hypovolemic, cardiogenic, obstructive, and distributive shock. Emphasis is placed on hypovolemic shock and its sequelae. The critical care nurse plays an important role as part of the team involved in the resuscitation and ongoing care of these patients. Understanding the underlying pathophysiology, recognizing signs a

The management of ballistic trauma: an infection control perspective.

This article discusses the relationship between ballistic trauma, clostridial contamination and potential wound infection and considers the implications for care by nurses and infection control teams. An overview of ballistics is presented followed by an examination of the pathophysiology of wounding and its effects. The philosophy of war surgery is balanced against civilian concepts and the differing management strategies that prevail. It explores the causes of, and relationship between, wound contamination and the seriousness of wound infection. Nurses, inexperienced in dealing and caring fo

Quality Improvement of Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Therapy in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

BACKGROUND: Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP) therapy is widely used in neonates, but the clinical practice varies. However, nursing practice differs among individuals, and an inappropriate application method may delay the respiratory therapy, influence the beneficial effect of NCPAP, and increase complications. We introduced a quality improvement project to expedite the application of NCPAP therapy and decrease the incidence of nasal trauma. METHODS: A new strategy of mobile NCPAP cart with prepacked fixation kits and a written protocol was implemented from April 2006. All me

Orthopaedic treatment of paediatric multiple trauma patients. A new technique.

In multiple trauma, skeletal injuries are generally responsible for long hospital stays, with concomitant nursing inconveniences and for most of the sequelae. A new operating technique has been perfected, especially adapted to paediatric traumatology: stable elastic rodding, precise and less aggressive technique. It avoids plastering and traction systems, and rapidly restores sufficient independence for a return to school. It is especially useful in multiple trauma patients, where nursing facilities and easy transport may be very helpful. The hospital regularly uses this technique for patients

Perceptions and realities of testing for alcohol and other drugs in trauma patients.

BACKGROUND: Routine testing for acute intoxication with alcohol and other drugs in trauma patients is a widely accepted practice at major trauma centers. However, there is often a significant difference between policy and practice. We sought to study the perception and the reality of testing practices at an urban Level I trauma center. METHODS: A survey was distributed to all emergency nursing staff and trauma team leaders (TTL). For the empiric aspects of this study, data were obtained from an institutional trauma database. Descriptive statistics and bivariate odds ratios were used to charac

Surgical management of patients with severe head injuries.

Minutes can make the difference between life and death when patients with severe head injuries require surgery. Subdural, epidural, and intracerebral hematomas and cerebral contusions and gunshot wounds are the pathologic entities encountered most frequently during emergency surgery in patients with severe head injuries. Neurosurgical team members frequently use hyperventilation, mannitol and barbiturates, and sophisticated monitoring modalities to manage patients with severe head injuries during and after surgery. Although monitoring a patient's intracranial pressure (ICP) through a ventricul

Examining the Lived Experience of Secondary Traumatic Stress in Emergency Department Nurses.

Emergency department (ED) nurses care for patients during critical times: violence, trauma, death, etc. Continuous exposure increases risk for secondary traumatic stress (STS): negative reaction experienced by someone with an indirect exposure to trauma. This impairs their ability to cope, increases levels of anxiety/depression, and increases attrition. Using a phenomenological design, the researcher interviewed 23 bedside ED nurses in Missouri and/or Illinois, USA. Five themes emerged: patient care, relationships at work, life outside the hospital, impacting on a personal level, and residual
