STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study on spinal tuberculosis (TB) at a tertiary care hospital in an endemic region.
PURPOSE: The aim of the study is to reiterate the importance of conservative management of spinal TB.
OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Spinal tuberculosis can present with wide spectrum of symptoms, with back pain being the most common symptom. It is the leading cause of non-traumatic paraplegia in developing countries. There is an emerging trend to operate on patients early with spinal TB.
METHODS: Forty-seven (M=14, F=33) patients were enrolled in the study during the four year study per

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis is responsible for more than 40% of spine infections. While tuberculostatic chemotherapy remains the gold-standard treatment, surgical intervention is necessary only in specific cases. This paper reports the results of 33 patients with spine tuberculosis operated in our department in the last 15 years.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluate retrospectively patients with spine tuberculosis operated in the last 15 years - from 1996 to 2011; evaluate the surgical options, infection resolution results, deformity correction, functional results and outcome in cases of neurological injury.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of report on spinal tuberculosis in children. We report a retrospective analysis of 124 children with TB spine treated over 30 years.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 124 children; of cervical (n=36), cervicothoracic (n=4), thoracic (n=53), and lumbar and lumbosacral tuberculosis (n=31) with no skip or multifocal lesions treated between 1971-2004. The age ranged from 2 to 15 years of age with 28 children less than 5 years of age, 58 were between 6 and 10 years, and 38 were over 10 years, 18 had paraplegia of various degrees. Ninety-one children

A 22-year-old female presented to our services with back pain and paraparesis for 11 months. She was earlier diagnosed with tuberculosis of spine, and antitubercular chemotherapy was started. However her condition had worsened. Plain and contrast-enhanced computed tomography scans of the thorax and magnetic resonance imaging of the thoracic spine showed heterogenous, lytic, expansile lesion involving third thoracic vertebra with epidural extension and large bilateral paraspinal and mediastinal components. Multiple variably sized loculations with fluid-fluid levels were seen within the lesion.

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study on spinal tuberculosis conducted at Fauji Foundation Hospital, Rawalpindi, Pakistan, with 1 year of follow-up.
OBJECTIVE: The main aim was to diagnose spinal tuberculosis on clinical grounds and with simple noninvasive laboratory and radiology investigations and to treat the patients with antituberculosis drugs.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Spinal tuberculosis associated with any neuro deficit is usually treated by surgery. Medical treatment can reverse most of the neuro deficit. Surgery should not be the first choice of treatment.
METHODS: Twenty-six patien

Between 1990 and 1993 we observed 10 cases of spinal tuberculosis. Magnetic resonance imaging largely contributed to diagnosis and detection of early neurological complications. Medical treatment is essential and must be given for a sufficient duration. Indications for surgery are exceptional and are usually reserved for severe neurological complications.

We reviewed MRI studies of 60 patients presenting with extradural compressive myeloradiculopathy secondary to vertebral disease to assess the imaging features which may help in differentiating tuberculous from neoplastic disease. Spin-echo T1-, proton density-and T2-weighted images were available for all patients and fast low-angle shot images with a low flip angle for 21 patients. Contrast-enhanced images were available for 28 patients. There were 41 patients with tuberculosis and 19 patients with neoplastic disease (metastases 11, lymphoma 6, plasmacytoma 1, and giant cell tumour 1). Discove

Between 1956 and 1968, 208 patients with spinal tuberculosis healed by chemotherapy with and without surgical intervention. Two vertebral bodies were affected in 82 patients, one in 23 cases, more than 4 in 70 patients. Sixty-one patients had neural involvement at the time of admission, 42 of them an incomplete or complete paraplegia. All patients were treated by triple-drug chemotherapy. Chemotherapy and bed rest alone was sufficient for 76 patients. Surgical intervention was indicated in 132 cases. Debridement was carried out in 33 cases, debridement and spinal fusion was performed in 18 cas

Spinal epidural abscess caused by Aspergillus spp is a debilitating form of invasive aspergillosis that can easily be misdiagnosed as spinal tuberculosis due to shared risk factors and clinical features. In this Grand Round, we describe a case of thoracic aspergillus spinal epidural abscess in a patient with underlying HIV infection. The initial diagnostic consideration was that of spinal tuberculosis. Consequently, despite positive microbiological cultures of Aspergillus fumigatus, antifungal therapy was delayed until histopathological evaluation of the affected tissue confirmed the presence

The post mortem content and composition of cerebrosides, sulfocerebrosides and gangliosides found in different sections of the spinal marrow of the healthy persons and 5 patients with spinal tuberculosis were analysed. It was shown that the changes in the content of gangliosides were varying in the lesion focus of different patients. In all patients with chronic tuberculous spondylitis, a significant drop in the content of cerebrosides (myelin markers) and sulfocerebrosides in the lesion focus, as compared with controls, was detected. There were some changes found in the content of cerebroside

BACKGROUND: Spinal tuberculosis is a rare condition that can result in significant neurological impairments. It is typically classified into two main types based on the anatomical involvement: parenchymal and meningeal. However, existing studies have not provided systematic reports that clarify the differences in aetiology, pathophysiological mechanisms, and clinical presentations between these two types.
METHODS: This retrospective study includes 107 patients diagnosed with intracranial tuberculosis accompanied by spinal tuberculosis via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) between May 2019 and

Spinal tuberculosis is a common manifestation of extrapulmonary tuberculosis and osteoarticular tuberculosis. Common clinical manifestations include constitutional symptoms, back pain, spinal tenderness, paraplegia, and spinal deformities. They are the common causes of paralysis and could increase the mortality in patients. Most cases of spinal tuberculosis remaining undiagnosed, and early clinical symptoms and imaging manifestations lack specificity, which explained the reason why it is difficult to identify from atypical spinal metastases, brucellosis and other diseases. The rate of missed d

BACKGROUND: Spinal tuberculosis (TB) is a leading cause of damage to the spine and associated neural structures.
PURPOSE: This study aims to identify the risk factors for neurological deterioration in spinal TB patients to promptly care for the patients before paralysis develops.
METHODS: The demographics, clinical characteristics, laboratory results, and radiographic findings of spinal TB patients were collected between 1993 and 2016. The data were analyzed using logistic regression methods. The predictive factors for neurological deficit were identified.
RESULTS: There were 125 spinal TB

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective clinical study.
PURPOSE: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the behavior of spinal deformities in tuberculosis (TB) of the spine during the initial 2 years and to suggest remedial measures.
OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Spinal TB is the most common cause of a kyphotic deformity in many parts of the world. Treatment of the established deformity is difficult, hazardous and has a high complication rate.
METHODS: We followed 50 adult patients treated for spinal TB for a minimum of 2 years. Average values of vertebral body height loss (VBL), deformity angle,
