Patients with peptic ulcer disease are commonly seen by family physicians. The incidence of duodenal ulcer seems to be declining in the United States. Avoidance of inciting factors and the use of antacids and cimetidine are indicated in the treatment of duodenal ulcers. New histamine H2 receptor antagonists and site-specific mucosal barrier agents are now available. Gastric ulcer differs from duodenal ulcer in many ways, and gastric carcinoma must be considered in the differential diagnosis. Other important entities include Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, "stress" ulceration, and peptic ulcer dise…

Gastric ulcer scars, which imply previous peptic ulcer disease, are visible with moderate frequency during double-contrast examinations. This article investigates the radiographic appearance of gastric ulcer scars and the frequency of their occurrence in two differing patient populations. Results with 35 gastric ulcers that were followed to healing indicate that most ulcer scars appear as folds converging toward the ulcer site, at times accompanied by a central depression and/or gross deformity of the stomach. Two series of 200 patients each who underwent double-contrast examinations suggest a…

Under study were 113 patients with hemorrhagic ulcer of the stomach. It was established that gastric ulcers were the causes of hemorrhage from the upper parts of the gastrointestinal tract in 9,3% of cases. Hemorrhagic ulcers of the stomach were the cause of hemorrhages of ulcerous etiology in 22% of cases. Predisposition of gastric ulcers to profuse hemorrhage, high percentage of their degeneration makes such radical surgical intervention as stomach resection very expedient.

Two patients with anorectal tuberculosis, without prior or concurrent knowledge of active pulmonary infection with mycobacteria, are described. Anal fissure in an unusual location which is slow to heal should have a biopsy performed, with appropriate stains and cultures carried out, to rule out tuberculous disease. Chemotherapy is then highly effective for ulcerative perianal tuberculosis.

In the past 6 years 26 patients underwent operation for recurrent duodenal ulcer after what was considered to be an "adequate" initial operation. In such patients it is necessary first to demonstrate the recurrent ulcer and then to determine its cause. Endoscopy was the best means of confirming the diagnosis. The cause of recurrence was determined by tests for gastric acid secretion; 70% of patients had hyperacidity and 80% had positive results of the Hollander test. Treatment is always surgical but varies depending on the type of initial surgery, the primary cause of recurrence and the condit…

Acute ischemic ulcers are real superficial skin infarcts due to capillary thrombosis. The remainder of the limb has a satisfactory blood supply and healing may be obtained, whatever the eetent of the ulcers, by methods aimed at correcting the general disorders in question and by local treatments in preparation for skin grafts. The prognosis of these ulcers is not as bad as that of chronic arteritis ulcers, which are caused by an important hypovascularization of the limb.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection underlies gastric ulcer disease, gastric cancer and duodenal ulcer disease. The disease expression reflects the pattern and extent of gastritis/gastric atrophy (i.e., duodenal ulcer with non-atrophic and gastric ulcer and gastric cancer with atrophic gastritis). Gastric and duodenal ulcers and gastric cancer have been known for thousands of years. Ulcers are generally non-fatal and until the 20th century were difficult to diagnose. However, the presence and pattern of gastritis in past civilizations can be deduced based on the diseases present. It has …

A healthy 27-year-old woman with a corneal ulcer underwent fibrin gluing with a bandage contact lens twice, due to an impending perforation. The ulcer lesion slowly progressed, unresponsive to topical antibiotics and amphotericin B. We removed the gluing patch and performed a corneal or scraping or biopsy with multiple amniotic membrane grafts to seal the thinned or perforated cornea. Three days after the surgery, the corneal cultures grew Fusarium, as well as Enterococcus faecalis. Three weeks after surgery, the outermost layer of amniotic membranes, serving as a temporary patch, was removed.…
