Cells derived from human skin malignant melanoma were implanted subcutaneously in athymic nude mice. Tumors which developed at the implant site were treated with ultrasonically induced hyperthermia at 49 degrees C for 30 min. Tumors were scanned with a computerized diagnostic ultrasound system before and after treatment. Light (LM) and electron (EM) micrographs of tumors were obtained after scanning. Five new ultrasonic weight formulae incorporating head circumference, fetal femur length, and a correction for oligohydramnios were prospectively analyzed in a group of 198 unselected patients scanned within 72 hours of birth. Comparison with the Shepard formula showed that inclusion of these parameters slightly, but significantly, improved the random error of weight estimation. The best-fit formula was: Log(10) BW = .04355HC + .05394AC - .0008582HC X AC + 1.2594 (FL/AC) - 2.0661.

The ultrasonic power with regard to its medical use for resection, treatment, and joining of soft and hard biologic tissues is investigated after the formation of the ultrasonic diagnostics and therapy. The situation of the ultrasonic surgery as an unconventional method for the ingenious complementation of tested operative techniques is valued after the representation of the mode of operation and the present equipment. The trend of development and prospective problems of the research are deduced from them.

The authors report their experience in 8 cases of cranial post-traumatic superficial collections, studied by US. Traumatic cranial injuries with superficial collections are not rare in newborns; their early and complete diagnosis is necessary for a correct therapeutic approach. Sonography could be used as a first choice procedure but presents some limitations in the study of the posterior fossa. Therefore CT remains the technique of choice.

Three cases of bone hydatidosis of pelvis with invasion of soft tissues provided data on the effectiveness of CT scan and ultrasound imaging for diagnosis, evaluation of extension and follow up surveillance of this affection. Two of the three patients treated medically were followed up by review CT scan and ultrasound examinations. The two techniques were found to be effective for detecting recurrence and for surveillance of hydatid lesions of soft tissues during medical therapy.

Fifty cases of post-stress acute acalculous cholecystitis were observed during the past 9 years, mainly after major surgery or trauma. We report a case of a vesicouterine fistula occurring after a Caesarean section. There was a noticeable delay in recognizing the fistula, which was, however, clearly visible on a vaginal ultrasound scanning. When urinary incontinence is developed after gynaecologic or obstetric surgery, a fistula must be suspected.
