Leiomyoma of the bladder in a patient with von Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis.

Leiomyomas are an uncommon manifestation of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) and occur most often in the gastrointestinal tract. Here, they have a proclivity for the proximal small bowel and tend to be multiple. Urinary tract involvement by NF-1 is usually in the form of neurofibromas, and leiomyomas are exceptionally rare. This report describes a case of solitary leiomyoma occurring in a 49 year old woman with NF-1. The patient had symptoms related to a lower urinary tract infection and on examination was found to have a distended bladder. Imaging of the bladder showed a mass involving the pos

Relationship of leukoplakia to urothelial malignancy.

The records of 108 patients presenting with leukoplakia of the urinary tract during the last 35 years were reviewed to define the natural history of this disease, with emphasis upon its association with urothelial cancer. Of the 108 patients 24 had upper urinary tract, 78 bladder and 10 urethral leukoplakia (1 with renal and bladder involvement, 3 with bladder and urethral involvement, and 1 with ureteral and renal involvement). Presenting complaints were primarily irritative. To date, 41 patients (37 per cent) have had associated carcinoma of the urothelium: 23 (21 per cent) presented with a

Small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder without gross hematuria: a case report.

Small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder (SCCB) is a rare and aggressive form of bladder cancer with poor prognosis. Hematuria is the main symptom of this malignancy, and most patients have a history of smoking. The disease incidence of malignant bladder tumors in China is approximately 0.74%. Early and accurate diagnosis of SCCB can ensure timely and appropriate treatment of this malignant disease. Oncologic surgery is the standard treatment; however, it may not be a curative approach. Chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy should be performed following surgical removal. This case report describ

Paraganglioma of the urinary bladder with a novel variant of SDHB mutation.

Urinary bladder paragangliomas (UBPGLs) are rare neuroendocrine tumours, comprising <0.05% of bladder neoplasms. We report a case of a male in his early 30s presenting with persistent lower abdominal discomfort. Imaging showed a hypervascular extraluminal mass on the posteroinferior aspect of the urinary bladder wall with suspicion of a soft tissue tumour likely paraganglioma (PGL). His biochemical markers were within normal limits. The patient underwent open partial cystectomy without complications. Histopathology confirmed PGL with classic zellballen architecture and immunohistochemistry was

Nephrotic syndrome as a complication of intravesical BCG treatment of transitional cell carcinoma of urinary bladder.

Nephrotic syndrome can be associated with various neoplasms, especially solid tumors and lymphomas. This patient presented with painless hematuria of transitional cell carcinoma of urinary bladder, underwent transurethral resection, but developed recurrence 16 months later. Repeat resection was done and intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) injections were started. After six months, the patient developed hypertension and nephrotic syndrome with a biopsy revealing membranous glomerulonephritis, though there was no radiological evidence of tumor. This is the first case of nephrotic syndrom

Inverted papilloma of the bladder: a review and an analysis of the recent literature of 365 patients.

OBJECTIVES: Until the 1970s, inverted urothelial papilloma (IUP) of the bladder was generally regarded as a benign neoplasm. However, in the 1980s, several reported cases suggested the malignant potential of these papillomas, including cases with features indicative of malignancy, recurrent cases, and cases of IUP synchronous or metachronous with transitional cell carcinoma. The aim of this systematic review and analysis of the literature since 1990 to date is to contribute to unresolved issues regarding the biological behavior and prognosis of these neoplasms to establish some key points in t

Toxicity and tumorigenicity of purpurin, a natural hydroxanthraquinone in rats: induction of bladder neoplasms.

Chronic toxicity and tumorigenicity of purpurin, a natural hydroxyanthraquinone, was examined in two groups of male F344 rats. One group was given a basal diet mixed with purpurin at a concentration of 1% throughout the experiment (520 days). Another group was kept on the basal diet without purpurin during the experiment. Almost all animals given purpurin developed conspicuous changes of kidney resembling 'progressive chronic nephropathies', the severity and frequency of which were much stronger than in controls. In rats with purpurin treatment, marked hyperplasia of pelvic epithelium was freq

Yolk sac tumor differentiation in urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder: a case report and differential diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Yolk sac tumor (YST) is a germ cell neoplasm that arises predominantly in the gonads, but can also derive from somatic neoplasms in extragonadal locations. These latter cases have been documented in several organs, although reports from the urinary tract are limited. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a bladder urothelial carcinoma with a predominant component of YST differentiation. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a unique case of a 76-year-old man with a recurrent urinary bladder tumor, initially interpreted as a high grade urothelial carcinoma with glandular differenti

Discovery of Volatile Biomarkers for Bladder Cancer Detection and Staging through Urine Metabolomics.

Timely diagnosis is crucial to improve the long-term survival of bladder cancer (BC) patients. The discovery of new BC biomarkers based in urine analysis is very attractive because this biofluid is in direct contact with the inner bladder layer, in which most of the neoplasms develop, and is non-invasively collected. Hence, this work aimed to unveil alterations in the urinary volatile profile of patients diagnosed with BC compared with cancer-free individuals, as well as differences among patients diagnosed at different tumor stages, to identify candidate biomarkers for non-invasive BC diagnos

Molecular Heterogeneity and Clinicopathologic Correlations in Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumors of the Urinary Bladder: A Study of 20 Cases With Predominant FN1::ALK Fusions and Novel Kinase Rearrangements.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) of the urinary bladder are rare mesenchymal neoplasms with an incompletely defined molecular spectrum. This integrated clinicopathologic and molecular study of 20 bladder IMTs utilized immunohistochemistry (IHC), fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and targeted RNA sequencing to characterize their molecular drivers. Clinically, patients (mean age 45 y) presented with hematuria (85%) and cystoscopic polypoid/nodular masses; despite muscularis propria invovlement (55%) or perivesical soft tissue extension (5%), clinical outcomes were excellent (9

Endoluminal instillation of epidoxorubicin as adjuvant treatment for upper urinary tract urothelial tumours.

Intravesical use of chemotherapeutic agents has been documented as effective and beneficial in the treatment and prophylaxis of bladder urothelial cancer. Because of the success achieved with these agents, several investigators have proposed these same drugs as adjuvant treatment after conservative procedures for urothelial tumours of the upper urinary tract. Experiences concerning topical therapy for upper tract urothelial neoplasms are still limited, but suggest a great potential benefit in terms of improved tumour control. Advances in endourologic techniques and increasing interest in the c

Urinary Bladder Perforation: A Forensic Case Report and Brief Literature Review.

Urinary bladder ulceration and perforation are serious conditions that may develop due to various causes, most commonly trauma or complications from medical procedures. In rare instances, these conditions can occur without an identifiable cause. Bladder perforation can lead to peritonitis, a life-threatening complication with a reported mortality rate approaching 50%, primarily due to systemic inflammatory responses and multi-organ failure. Although spontaneous bladder rupture is uncommon, it has been associated with underlying conditions such as bladder outlet obstruction (BOO), malignancy, a

Carcinosarcoma of the bladder: a case report and review of the literature.

Carcinosarcoma of the urinary bladder is a rare neoplasm that is composed of malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. In these tumors, histogenesis and biological behaviour remain controversial. Approximately 70 cases have been reported in the literature, usually as case reports or a small series. A series of 221 cases using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program database has been reported recently. Optimal treatment is uncertain. Herein, we report a case of sarcomatoid carcinoma of urinary bladder of a farmer aged 84 years old with a year history of hematuria an

Proteinuria and renal function during and after acute urinary retention.

PURPOSE: Benign prostatic hyperplasia is the most common neoplasm as well as the main cause of bladder outlet obstruction in men. It may progress to involve a risk of urinary retention. We investigated the effects of acute urinary retention on renal function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated renal function using biochemical markers in 25 men with a mean age of 69 years in whom an episode of acute urinary retention a mean of 31 hours in duration was due to bladder outlet obstruction. Patients were followed for 6 months after acute retention was relieved. Patients were not known to have had

Postoperative spindle cell nodule of the urethra and bladder in a 90-year-old male: A diagnostic challenge.

Postoperative spindle cell nodule is a rare benign reactive lesion of the genitourinary tract that can closely mimic malignant spindle cell neoplasms. We report a 90-year-old male with recurrent urethral obstructions and bladder lesions over four years following repeated instrumentation for urethral strictures. Multiple cystoscopies revealed recurrent masses (2-5 cm) throughout the urethra and urinary bladder. Initial biopsies were nondiagnostic. The final histopathological examination demonstrated fibrosis, edema, inflammation, and atypical spindle cells without mitosis or necrosis. Immunohis

Prolapsing cystitis cystica causing bladder outlet obstruction: An unusual complication.

Cystitis cystica (CC) is aproliferative disorder of bladder urothelium and usually subsides with medical therapy. However, this is not true for severe CC where surgical intervention is required to control breakthrough urinary tract infection (UTI). It may be mistaken as bladder neoplasm or posterior urethral valve, especially in children. Here, we report a case of CC in a 2-year-old boy where we had to excise the large pedunculated intravesical lesion to control breakthrough UTI and ongoing renal damage.

[Renal and upper urinary tract tumors: what the nephrologist should know].

Urinary tract carcinomas are among the most common malignancies and are derived from neoplastic transformation of the urothelium. They can be located in the lower (bladder, urethra) or upper (pyelocaliceal cavities, ureter) urinary tract. Urothelial carcinomas are the fourth most common cancer type after prostate or breast cancer, lung cancer, and colorectal cancer. Bladder cancer accounts for 90-95% of urothelial carcinomas and it is the most common malignancy of the urinary tract. Renal cancer also belongs to the urothelial carcinomas and is a relatively uncommon solid tumor, accounting for

Bladder leiomyoma and the utility of 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose-Positron Emission Tomography - a Case Report.

Bladder leiomyomas are rare neoplasms and various diagnostic methods are available to assist in confirming diagnosis preoperatively. Presented here is a case of bladder leiomyoma in a 41-year-old female who presented with urinary symptoms and right thigh pain. Imaging revealed a soft tissue density mass in the bladder wall. However concerns of a leiomyosarcoma remained. An 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computerized tomography (PET/CT) demonstrated low FDG uptake and absence of metastatic lesions. In combination with operative findings, the tumor allowed for localize
