Mutilation of the uvula among Bedouins of the South Sinai.

Mutilation of the uvula, as practiced by various tribes of Bedouins in the South Sinai, was discovered while carrying out anthropological studies in the area. Partial or total amputation of the uvula is performed on both boys and girls during the first or second year of life, as a ritual custom. Anatomical changes in the soft palate due to the uvulectomy in 115 subjects are described. The remnant of the uvula (scar) was classified according to size as: very large, large, medium, small, trace or none. A notch or kind of cleft of the palate, as a result of the uvulectomy, was considered the most…

The bifid uvula in ear, nose and throat practice.

Out of 2,000 consecutive ear, nose and throat patients, 44 were found with bifid uvulas. Five of the cleft uvulas were associated with submucous cleft palate, and eight were associated with short palates; however, dyslalia was evident in only one case. Compensation for the wide palato-pharyngeal space can occur by hyperplasia of the nasopharyngeal tonsil and hypertrophy and increased mobility of the pharyngeal constrictors and Passavant's ridge. On the other hand, otologic manifestations were complained of in 13 cases. The asymptomatic cases were examined under magnification and audiometricall…

Double uvula in a fifty-six-year-old woman.

INTRODUCTION: Deformities of the uvula are considered as the dark area of otorhinolaryngology practice. This little and plain part of the human organism has various functions and its abnormalities might cause serious disabilities. CASE PRESENTATION: In our case report, we present a unique deformity of the uvula in a 56-year-old woman. DISCUSSION: The aim of this report was to present a very rare condition, unique case "polyuvula", and to review the literature regarding other uvula abnormalities.

About the One Hemi-Uvula Repair Technique During Palatoplasty.

This is a response to a letter replying to our paper discussing the significance of the uvula during palatoplasty and our surgical technique of uvula repair. The hemi-uvula repair technique was developed independently in our department. In our publication, we fully cited the 2 studies by Rossell-Perry et al about uvula repair and acknowledged them to be the first to publish the concept of using one hemi-uvula. Upon further study, the mistake of omitting 2 references from the list, although they were cited in the text, was found to have occurred during the transition between publishers of this …

Familial Absent Uvula With Velopharyngeal Incompetence-A New Syndrome?

We present a family with a previously undescribed abnormality of the palate and oropharynx which involved the absence of the uvula and the anterior pillar of the fauces, rudimentary posterior pillar of the fauces, and hypernasality. Eight family members over 4 generations are affected in a pattern consistent with autosomal dominant inheritance. A causal role for the FOXF2 gene has been identified and previously reported. We describe the management of the proband, which involved attempting to lengthen the palate and to retroposition the abnormally anteriorly directed velar musculature, along wi…

Atypical carcinoid (moderately differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma) of the uvula.

Carcinoid (neuroendocrine) tumors of the head and neck rarely occur outside the larynx and, until now, none has been reported in the oral cavity. We describe what we believe is the first reported case of an atypical carcinoid tumor, or any other type of neuroendocrine carcinoma, of the uvula.

Infantile asphyxia due to aberrant uvula--an anatomic misadventure.

A case of unexpected death of an infant with an abnormally elongated uvula is presented. The child, born prematurely, was recovering from protracted treatment in hospital, including surgical interventions and periods of ventilation support necessitating recurrent intubations and anesthesia. She was discharged home in good general health, affected by episodes of cough, and was found dead in her crib a week later. The proximity of the aberrant uvula to the vocal cords may have caused intermittent laryngospasm, with subsequent symptoms of cough and airway obstruction, ending in a fatal outcome. R…

Revised uvulopalatopharyngoplasty with uvula preservation and its clinical study.

OBJECTIVES: A revised uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is reported for reducing the surgical complications without compromising the response. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A new method of performing UPPP was designed, in which the uvula is preserved, but a larger portion of the soft palate is removed. This new procedure is called the 'revised UPPP with uvula preservation' (Han's UPPP or H-UPPP), the characteristics of which are as follows: complete preservation of the uvula; larger portion of the soft palate resected (with the levator palati and tensor palati remaining intact); the adipose tissue in…

[Functional and aesthetic significance of the uvula in cleft palate repair].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate functional and aesthetic role of uvula in cleft palate repair. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one patients aged from 1 year 2 months to 7 years were included in this study with congenital cleft lip and/or palate. The morphological investigation of the resected hemi- uvula was done. Palatoplasty was performed in all cases. RESULTS: According to morphological results, most of the resected hemi-uvula consisted of vascularized fibrous tissue, covered with epithelium. In three groups of patients (with unilateral, bilateral and isolated cleft palate), the duration of the su…
