INTRODUCTION: Vascular graft infection is a life threatening situation with significant morbidity and mortality. Bacterial graft infection can lead to false aneurysms, bleeding and sepsis. There are a lot of risky situations where grafts can become infected. It is therefore highly desirable to have a vascular graft that is resistant to infection. In this retrospective clinical study, a silver-impregnated vascular graft was evaluated in various indications.
METHODS: Our study included a total of 71 patients who received a silver-impregnated vascular graft during the period from 2013 to 2018. P

INTRODUCTION: Paediatric extremity vascular injuries are infrequent, and management protocols draw significantly from adult vascular trauma experience necessitating a continuous review of evidence.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective registry review of all consecutive patients younger than 18 years age treated for extremity vascular trauma from 2007 to 2012 was carried out. Diagnostic algorithm relied little on measurement of pressure indices. Data was collected about demographics, time since injury, pattern of injury, ISS, initial GCS and presence of shock, results of diagnostic modality

BACKGROUND: Minimal incision techniques for vein harvest may lessen wound complications after lower extremity revascularization, but long-term patency and limb salvage data are limited.
METHODS: This retrospective case-control study used a computerized vascular registry set in an academic vascular surgical practice. All patients undergoing lower extremity revascularization using autogenous reversed great saphenous vein by a single vascular surgeon in a 10-year period were reviewed. Harvest of great saphenous vein via long single incision (SI) in 133 patients was compared with minimal incision

Background A soft tissue defect resulting from a diabetic heel ulcer can be difficult to address due to limited reconstructive options and unique local area demand. The medial plantar artery flap is ideal for heel defect coverage as it provides a thick glabrous skin with good sensory feedback. The prerequisite of medial plantar artery flap surgery is a patent medial plantar artery, which is a branch of the posterior tibial artery (PTA). Nevertheless, no feasibility study of the medial plantar artery flap in diabetic patients with vascular insufficiency has been reported so far. We conducted a

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Arteriovenous access ischemic steal (AVAIS) is a rare complication that causes morbidity and threatens hemodialysis access usability in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). This study aimed to determine the incidence of AVAIS over a 15-year period and assess the access usability after surgical correction.
METHODS: Access operations between January 2007 and August 2022 at Helsinki University Hospital were reviewed. Demographics, clinical, duplex, and contrast examinations with brachial artery volume flows, finger pressures, and delays to surgery were evaluated. S

OBJECTIVE: Autologous vein is the preferred conduit for lower extremity bypass. However, it is often unavailable because of prior harvest or inadequate for bypass owing to insufficient caliber. Cryopreserved cadaveric vessels can be used as conduits for lower extremity revascularization when autogenous vein is not available and the use of prosthetic grafts is not appropriate. Many studies have shown that donor characteristics influence clinical outcomes in solid organ transplantation, but little is known regarding their impact in vascular surgery. The purpose of this study was to examine the e

Vascular access presents unique challenges in experimental mice due to their small size and anatomical constraints. Achieving reliable vascular access is crucial for optimizing experimental outcomes, especially in protocols requiring serial blood sampling or repeated intravascular therapy. Although vascular access buttons (VABs) offer significant advantages, their widespread adoption has been limited by technical challenges and a lack of comprehensive validation regarding their safety, feasibility, and long-term management. To address these gaps, we conducted a comprehensive evaluation of VAB

The objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of increasing the remote patency rate of allogeneic vessel transplantation through studying the effects of N-ethyl-N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide and polyethyleneimine (EDC-PEI) heparinization on allogeneic vascular antigens and inflammation levels. Forty rats were randomly divided into the control group, the EDC group, the PEI group and the EDC-PEI group. The rat abdominal aorta was used as the object of study, and the transplanted blood vessels were pretreated with EDC as the water-soluble cross-linking agent and PEI as t

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Arteriovenous (AV) fistula surgery is commonly performed for AV access for hemodialysis. However the ideal anaesthetic technique of choice remains debated. We aimed to assess operative conditions, vascular patency, and complication rate following AV fistula surgery with isolated brachial plexus block among end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients.
METHODS: This prospective, observational study included 214 patients undergoing AV fistula surgery under isolated supraclavicular brachial plexus block between January and December 2017. The diameters of the vessels both before a

BACKGROUND: The most common cause of graft failure in patients undergoing hemodialysis is outflow venous stenosis. Long-term compromise of venous central trunks must be resolved.
PURPOSE: This study was undertaken to evaluate an unusual surgical option, bypass to decompress a long-term vascular graft to the femoral vein, improving venous outflow, alleviating symptoms of venous hypertension, and restoring vascular integrity for dialysis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 3 patients with end-stage renal disease with signs and symptoms of dysfunctioning grafts. Angiographic studies showe

Background: While recent literature emphasizes the predictive value of composite inflammatory and nutritional indices for vascular outcomes, this study evaluates the actual predictive capacity of preoperative indices (PNI, GNRI, SII, NLR, PLR) for de novo arteriovenous fistula (AVF) maturation and 1-year primary patency. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 945 end-stage renal disease patients who underwent strictly radio-cephalic autologous AVF creation. Preoperative indices were calculated from routine parameters. Diagnostic accuracy for predicting 1-year patency loss was assessed using rece

BACKGROUND: Vascular access has always been the Achilles heel of hemodialysis. Advances in health care have brought forward patients requiring treatment who have no veins suitable for creation of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) or insertion of central venous catheters. Use of an artery as permanent vascular access has been reported by many authors. This study reports brachial AAPL as an efficient and safe access for hemodialysis patients with central venous occlusion.
METHODS: Between January 2011 and December 2014, 35 brachial arterio-arterial prosthetic loops (AAPL) were created. The age of pat

BACKGROUND Arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) are used to provide vascular access for hemodialysis in patients with end-stage renal failure. However, stenosis and thrombosis can compromise long-term AVF patency. The objective of this study was to evaluate catheter thrombolysis with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA), using a trans-brachial approach, for acutely thrombosed AVFs. MATERIAL AND METHODS This retrospective study examined 30 cases of AVF thrombosis treated between January 1, 2015 and January 1, 2017. All patients received transcatheter thrombolysis with PTA using a trans-brachial

This two-part study investigated the topical treatment of vasospasm in the tail arteries of rats. In part A, an epinephrine-induced model of vasospasm was used to study a variety of vasodilating agents with actions on at least five different sites in the contractile mechanism of the vascular smooth-muscle cell. The most effective commercially available agents evaluated in this part of the study appeared to be 20% lidocaine and Thorazine (25 mg/ml). In part B, a model was established in which epinephrine-induced vasoconstriction was found to significantly impair anastomotic patency. Thorazine w

There is a steady increase in the number of patients with chronic renal insufficiency undergoing long-term hemodialysis, and an increasing number of these patients have exhausted veins due to multiple vascular access and salvage procedures. These patients may be candidates for an alternative vascular access procedure, the brachioaxillary interposition arteriovenous graft. This graft was used in 13 patients with a 100% patency rate and no significant complications at 81 patient months. The results indicate that the large axillary vein, which provides an adequate runoff, and a narrow graft-to-ve
