Legionella pneumophila is associated with outbreaks of either Pontiac fever, a self-limited influenzalike condition without pneumonia, or Legionnaires' disease, a severe pneumonic disease affecting elderly or immunocompromised individuals. An outbreak of both Legionnaires' disease and Pontiac fever after a point-source exposure to L pneumophila was studied. Our observations demonstrated the spectrum of illness that L pneumophila may cause and emphasized the importance of host factors in affecting the expression of infection.

We have previously described how children with complex CHD access developmental and psychosocial services in Maine, most often beyond the reach of the surgical centre. In this follow-up study, we describe a similar pattern for children in Vermont. Of 406 at-risk children between 2017 and 2019, 37% had an encounter. Very few individuals underwent developmental assessment or psychological or neuropsychological testing (1-4%). Visit volume was highest for mental health assessments in children older than 5 years and occurred predominately in community clinics and private practices close to home.

Since early August 1998, 40 illnesses caused by a single strain of Listeria monocytogenes (LM) have been identified in 10 states: Ohio (13 cases); New York; Tennessee, Massachusetts, and West Virginia (three each); Michigan (two); and Connecticut, Oregon, Vermont, and Georgia (one each). Dates of illness onset or LM isolation ranged from August 2 through December 2. All LM isolates from these cases are serotype 4b and share an unusual pattern when subtyped either by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis or by ribotyping methods. Historically, this pattern is rare among LM isolates from humans.
