Small-target random dot stereogram and binocular suppression testing for preschool vision screening.

BACKGROUND: New, small-target (< 1 degree) random dot stereogram (STRDS) and binocular suppression (STBS) tests appropriate for preschool vision screening were developed to correct the shortcomings of previous such tests, particularly missed cases of anisometropic amblyopia such as found with some RDS-based testing. METHODS: In Experiment 1, the tests were administered to 14 patients with current or a recent history of moderate (< or = 20/60) anisometropic amblyopia, or with accommodative esotropia or monofixation syndrome. All subjects had good binocularity (< or = 100" contour stereoacuity)

Effects of intraocular lens malposition on binocular single vision in bilaterally pseudophakic patients.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between intraocular lens (IOL) malposition and quality of binocular single vision following uncomplicated extracapsular cataract extraction and posterior chamber IOL implantation. METHODS: Fifty-two bilaterally pseudophakic patients were included. The main outcome measures were visual acuity, stereoscopic acuity, horizontal and vertical amplitudes of fusion and heterophoria, tilting angle and decentration amount of the pseudophacos and summation of these values in somewhat vectorial manner to define the total decentration and tilt of IOLS. RESULTS: Th

Subcortical Foundations of Binocular Vision: Circuits and Computation from Retina to Cortex and Back.

Binocular integration is a well-established feature of neuronal processing in the primary visual cortex, where such integration is thought to first emerge. However, accumulating evidence demonstrates that subcortical retinorecipient nuclei possess sophisticated binocular processing capabilities, with important implications for cortical function, visual behavior, and non-imaging-forming physiology. This review synthesizes our current understanding of the circuit origins and functional relevance of binocular integration and modulation in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, superior colliculus

The effects of simulated monocular and binocular vision impairment on football penalty kick performance.

Sports performance is relatively robust under high levels of binocular blur. However, the limited research studies investigating monocular impairments has shown it has a larger impact on sport performance. This research study is relevant for classification in sports for athletes with vision impairment (VI), where visual acuity (VA) from the better eye is used during classification. Across two experiments, we aimed to establish the point at which binocular and monocular impairments affected performance in a football penalty kick (PK) through simulating varying severities of degraded VA and cont

Loss of binocular vision as direct cause for misrouting of temporal retinal fibers in albinism.

In humans, the nasal retina projects to the contralateral hemisphere, whereas the temporal retina projects ipsilaterally. The nasotemporal line that divides the retina into crossed and uncrossed parts coincides with the vertical meridian through the fovea. This normal projection of the retina is severely altered in albinism, in which the nasotemporal line shifted into the temporal retina with temporal retinal fibers cross the midline at the optic chiasm. This study proposes the loss of binocular vision as direct cause for misrouting of temporal retinal fibers and shifting of the nasotemporal l

Monocular and binocular development in children with albinism, infantile nystagmus syndrome, and normal vision.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To compare interocular acuity differences, crowding ratios, and binocular summation ratios in 4- to 8-year-old children with albinism (n = 16), children with infantile nystagmus syndrome (n = 10), and children with normal vision (n = 72). METHODS: Interocular acuity differences and binocular summation ratios were compared between groups. Crowding ratios were calculated by dividing the single Landolt C decimal acuity with the crowded Landolt C decimal acuity mono- and binocularly. A linear regression analysis was conducted to investigate the contribution of 5 predictors to the

The Measurement and Clinical Implications of the CA/C Ratio in Binocular Vision: A Literature Review.

AIM: This work summarises research on the convergence accommodation to convergence (CA/C) ratio, including the methods used to measure it in both laboratory and clinical settings. It explores the role of the CA/C ratio in the diagnosis and treatment of binocular and accommodative dysfunctions, considers its potential association with myopia, discusses age-related differences, examines its relationship with the accommodative convergence to accommodation (AC/A) ratio and reviews established normative values. METHODS: A literature-based narrative review was carried out on the CA/C ratio and/or c

Accommodative and binocular disorders in preteens with computer vision syndrome: a cross-sectional study.

To assess computer vision syndrome (CVS) in a preteen population through an adult-validated CVS questionnaire and to evaluate how digital devices affect accommodative and binocular vision, we enrolled 309 preteens in this cross-sectional study. An adult-validated CVS questionnaire adapted to preteens was used for all subjects. Visual acuity testing, unilateral and alternate cover tests, and tests for accommodative and vergence responses were performed for all preteens. The mean age was 10.75 ± 0.67 (10-12) years. Subjects were divided into two groups: the mild CVS group with a mean CVS score ≤

Risk of musculoskeletal injuries, fractures, and falls in medicare beneficiaries with disorders of binocular vision.

IMPORTANCE: Disorders of binocular vision are increasingly prevalent among fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries 65 years or older. Visual impairment is a recognized risk factor for fractures. Despite the association of visual impairment and fracture risk, to our knowledge, no study has examined the influence that disorders of binocular vision (strabismus, amblyopia, diplopia, and nystagmus) may have on musculoskeletal injury and fracture risk in the elderly population. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate associations between disorders of binocular vision and musculoskeletal injury, fracture, and falls i
