In vitro reliability testing and in vivo lifespan estimation of wireless Pixium Vision PRIMA photovoltaic subretinal prostheses suggest prolonged durability and functionality in clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE: Retinal implants have the potential to restore some sight in patients with retinal degeneration. The PRIMA implant's novel design features simpler insertion and no transscleral cabling or extraocular components. This in vitro study investigated PRIMA's durability under real time and accelerated conditions and estimated the device's lifespan in vivo. APPROACH: Two potential failure modes were examined: corrosion and overstimulation. Real-time aging was tested using implants immersed in balanced saline solution (BSS) at 37 °C, mimicking the intraocular environment. Accelerated aging

The night vision threshold test is a better predictor of low serum vitamin A concentration than self-reported night blindness in pregnant urban Nepalese women.

This study was conducted to validate the night vision threshold test (NVTT) as an indicator of night blindness. A total of 1401 pregnant women from the National Maternity Hospital participated in this study. Women were queried about night blindness and took the NVTT using standardized procedures after 10 min of dark adaptation. Sixteen percent failed the NVTT, but only 6.4% reported having night blindness. Blood samples from women who failed the NVTT (cases) and matched controls indicated the serum vitamin A (SVA) concentration was lower (P < 0.05) in cases (1.19 +/- 0.03 micromol/L) than in c

Frequency of colour vision deficiencies in melanoma patients: results of a prospective comparative screening study with the Farnsworth panel D 15 test including 300 melanoma patients and 100 healthy controls.

Patients with melanoma may experience a variety of different vision symptoms, in part associated with melanoma-associated retinopathy. For several melanoma patients with or without melanoma-associated retinopathy, colour vision deficiencies, especially involving the tritan system, have been reported. The frequency of colour vision deficiencies in a larger cohort of melanoma patients has not yet been investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of colour vision deficiencies in melanoma patients subject to stage of disease, prognostic factors such as tumour thickness or C

Effect of visual impairment on neuropsychological test performance.

Three vision-dependent neuropsychological tests of visual processing--Benton's Facial Recognition (FR), Judgment of Line Orientation (JLO), and Visual Form Discrimination (VFD)--were administered to subjects on the same day as routine ophthalmic examination. Seventeen subjects had Jaeger near vision of J5 (analogous to 20/50) or worse resulting from refractive error, while 13 control subjects had normal near vision of J1. Neuropsychological test scores of these groups were compared with each other and also the published standardization group for each test. Low near-vision subjects' performance

Binocular Vision Anomalies in Scotland at Age 3.5-5.5 Years: An Epidemiological Study.

PURPOSE: Scotland has comprehensive vision screening at age 3.5-5.5 years, with ~85% participation (40,000-50,000 episodes annually). Orthoptists deliver the screening, including presenting vision and tests for binocular vision anomalies (BVAnom). The aims were to investigate (1) changes in the prevalence of BVAnom, 2013-2022 and (2) whether less comprehensive screening of solely presenting vision would detect BVAnom. METHODS: Data from eight Scottish Health Boards were available for 2013-2014, 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2020-2021 and 2021-2022. Binocular vision tests included cover test, ocular m…

Agnosic vision is like peripheral vision, which is limited by crowding.

Visual agnosia is a neuropsychological impairment of visual object recognition despite near-normal acuity and visual fields. A century of research has provided only a rudimentary account of the functional damage underlying this deficit. We find that the object-recognition ability of agnosic patients viewing an object directly is like that of normally-sighted observers viewing it indirectly, with peripheral vision. Thus, agnosic vision is like peripheral vision. We obtained 14 visual-object-recognition tests that are commonly used for diagnosis of visual agnosia. Our "standard" normal observer

Screening tools for the identification of dementia for adults with age-related acquired hearing or vision impairment: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive screening tests frequently rely on items being correctly heard or seen. We aimed to identify, describe, and evaluate the adaptation, validity, and availability of cognitive screening and assessment tools for dementia which have been developed or adapted for adults with acquired hearing and/or vision impairment. METHOD: Electronic databases were searched using subject terms "hearing disorders" OR "vision disorders" AND "cognitive assessment," supplemented by exploring reference lists of included papers and via consultation with health professionals to identify additional

Assessing Visual Function in Retinal Gene Therapy.

Conventional tests of visual function include measures such as visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, perimetry, and color vision. However, standard clinical tests are typically designed to test those with normal or near-normal sensitivities. Such tests may be inappropriate where profound vision loss exists, as may be the case in retinal gene therapy if the therapy is nascent and/or the therapy is unable to fully restore the visual system. Here we provide step-by-step instructions for performing a battery of three computerized tests to quantify light detection, light localization, and motion det

Screening of colour vision defects in diabetic patients.

The colour vision of 50 diabetic patients was examined with two screening tests, Standard Pseudoisochromatic Plates part 2 (SPP 2) and Farnsworth Panel D 15 (Panel D 15) test and with two diagnostic tests, Nagel anomaloscope and Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue test. The performance of the diabetic patients in colour vision tests was compared to their performance in colour dependent urine and blood glucose tests. Fourteen of the patients failed the glucose tests, and they failed both of the screening tests as well. The diagnostic tests showed that all of them had a blue-yellow defect and 10 of them …

[Colour vision and acquired colour vision disturbances. Part I: basic aspects].

Colour vision is the most sensitive sensory ability of the human eye, making it possible to distinguish several million nuances of colour. The physiology of colour vision has meanwhile been researched in depth, including the genetic and biochemical principles. This knowledge has facilitated a better understanding of the results of clinical tests on colour vision. These clinical tests provide useful information on the aetiology of very different clinical pictures in ophthalmology and as such are important for the diagnosis of these diseases. Acquired colour vision deficiencies in patients with

[Functional diagnostic options for advanced and end stage glaucoma].

The visual functional diagnostics for patients with advanced glaucomatous optic neuropathy are subject to challenge. Reduced visual acuity, instable fixation and extensive scotomata frequently lead to incorrect results within the central 30° or 24° field. Static automatic perimetry (SAP) in particular is often hampered by extended examination time and fatigue especially in older patients. Focusing of the examination towards the central 10° field using a dense test grid (2° distance between stimulus locations) allows a more exact assessment of the small remaining central island.
