B vitamins and the aging brain.

Deficiencies of the vitamins folate, B(12) , and B(6) are associated with neurological and psychological dysfunction and with congenital defects. In the elderly, cognitive impairment and incident dementia may be related to the high prevalence of inadequate B vitamin status and to elevations of plasma homocysteine. Plausible mechanisms include homocysteine neurotoxicity, vasotoxicity, and impaired S-adenosylmethionine-dependent methylation reactions vital to central nervous system function. In light of this, it is imperative to find safe ways of improving vitamin B status in the elderly without

[Severe encephalopathy and vitamin B12 deficiency: reversibility after nutritional therapy].

Introduction: the vitamin cobalamin is essential for a proper functioning of the CNS, hematopoiesis, and DNA synthesis. Its deficiency is frequently secondary to pernicious anemia or strict vegetarian diets. Case report: an 18-month-old male infant presented with a decreased level of consciousness and movement disorder (tremor and choreiform movements) of several hours' standing. He had a history of delayed acquisition of motor milestones (not standing, monosyllabic language), and progressive loss of these over the last few weeks (head support and sitting). He had been breastfed from birth. Hi

Vitamin B12 and health.

OBJECTIVE: To review recent evidence that suggests vitamin B12 is associated with risk reduction for some chronic diseases and birth defects. QUALITY OF EVIDENCE: A MEDLINE search from 1999 to 2007 was performed using the key word vitamin B12. The most relevant articles (129) dealt with cardiovascular disease, cancer, mental health, and birth outcomes;most studies presented level II evidence. MAIN MESSAGE: Vitamin B12 might confer health benefits; however, such benefits are difficult to ascertain because of the complementary functions of vitamin B12 and folic acid. Vitamin B12 might lower hi

Vitamin B(12) deficiency as a cause of delirium in a patient with spinal cord injury.

A man with spinal cord injury (SCI) and multiple medical comorbidities had new-onset delirium during his 14th month of hospitalization. Diagnostic workup did not elicit an obvious etiology for mental status changes. Delirium persisted despite psychiatry intervention, and he was unable to be weaned from the ventilator because of prolonged agitation. Routine anemia workup revealed a possible untreated vitamin B(12) deficiency, although laboratory values were inconclusive. Empiric treatment with cyanocobalamin injections was initiated, and his delirium remarkably resolved after 3 weeks of treatme

Cyanocobalamin may be beneficial in the treatment of recurrent aphthous ulcers even when vitamin B12 levels are normal.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of cyanocobalamin treatment in patients having recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAUs) with normal or decreased serum vitamin B12 (cobalamin) levels. METHODS: Seventy-two patients with RAU were included in the study. In addition to serum cobalamin levels, hemanitic and biochemistrical parameters were measured. Patients with serum cobalamin levels < 140 pg/mL were defined as the cobalamin deficient group (CDG) whereas patients with cobalamin levels > or = 140 pg/mL were defined as the cobalamin normal group (CNG). The degree of aphthous ulcer healing was determined

Spinal myoclonus associated with vitamin B12 deficiency.

We report a 85-year-old female patient with involuntary and regular movements restricted to abdominal muscles, resembling belly dance, with additional clinical features; ataxia, impaired cognition, neuropathy and glossitis. We initially excluded the possible cortical and spinal structural abnormalities with magnetic resonance imagings and performed routine blood analysis which revealed that serum vitamin B12 (vB12) level was under normal ranges. The relation of low serum vB12 level and myoclonus is speculative and very few studies have demonstrated such patients. In this case report, serum vB1

Bacterial mercury methylation modulated by vitamin B9: An overlooked pathway leads to increased environmental risks.

There has been a serious health and environmental concern in conversion of inorganic mercury (Hg) to the neurotoxin, methylmercury (MeHg) by anaerobic microbes, while very little is known about the potential role of vitamin B9 (VB9) regulator in the biochemical generation of MeHg. This study innovatively investigated bacterial Hg methylation by Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA in the presence of VB9 under two existing scenarios. In the low-complexing scenario, the bacterial MeHg yield reached 68 % higher than that without VB9 within 72 h, which was attributed to free VB9-protected PCA cells reliev

B vitamins as adjunct therapies for depressive disorder.

The rising prevalence of depressive disorder worldwide requires better interventional avenues. B vitamins are gaining increasing interest as potential therapeutic approaches in this context given current evidence for a bidirectional association between B vitamin deficiency and depressive disorder. We discuss how B vitamins and B vitamin-associated probiotic supplementation may represent an effective adjunctive treatment for depression, and highlight the key metabolic mechanisms involved. We also provide a perspective on the future of this field and advocate for further high-quality clinical tr
