Acute Effects of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Priming on Volleyball Spike Performance and Three-Dimensional Kinematics.

Volleyball spiking is a complex explosive skill that requires coordinated force generation and transfer across the upper limbs, trunk, and lower limbs. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has been proposed as a preconditioning strategy for enhancing neuromuscular activation; however, its acute effects on phase-specific volleyball spike kinematics remain unclear. This study investigated the acute effects of NMES priming on spike performance and three-dimensional kinematics in male university volleyball players. Thirty participants were randomly assigned to an NMES conditioning group (n …

Lower limb movement asymmetry exists during volleyball stop-jump landing: Insights from markerless motion capture.

Patellar tendinopathy is a highly prevalent injury associated with high knee angular accelerations. However, collecting kinematic data on the volleyball court remains challenging. This study investigated landing kinematics between dominant and non-dominant lower limbs during stop-jumps on the volleyball court and analysed landing variables to identify biomechanical patterns associated with high knee angular accelerations. Landing kinematics were quantified using 3D markerless motion capture (OpenCap) with two cameras. Fourteen male and 5 female elite volleyball players performed 10 stop-jump l…

Patellar Tendon Properties and Unilateral Jump Performance in Junior Elite Volleyball Players With Patellar Tendinopathy.

Athletes with patellar tendinopathy (PT) seem to have superior jumping performance compared to asymptomatic counterparts. However, previous studies have primarily assessed bilateral tasks which does not capture unilateral impairments. Hence, this study aimed to assess the patellar tendon properties and unilateral jump performance, and their associations in volleyball athletes with and without PT. Lower extremity injury assessment, patellar tendon properties using shear wave (SW) elastography and comprehensive jump performance analysis were performed. From 27 athletes (16 females) included in t…

Biomechanic Differences Between Anticipated and Unanticipated Volleyball Block Jump: Implications for Lower Limb Injury Risk.

Volleyball is a high-intensity sport characterized by repetitive jumping, sudden directional changes, and overhead movements, all of which significantly increase the risk of injuries, particularly to the shoulders, knees, and ankles. Despite the frequency of injuries caused by actions like blocking and spiking, there has been limited research focused on the specific biomechanical risk factors unique to volleyball. This study aimed to investigate the lower limb biomechanics during block jumps in both the dominant and non-dominant directions, under both anticipated and unanticipated conditions, …

Soccer and volleyball players do not land differently: implications for anterior cruciate ligament injury risk.

BACKGROUND: Non-contact anterior cruciate ligament injuries are common in soccer and volleyball, occurring during changes of direction and landings. This study aimed to investigate kinematic differences between soccer and volleyball players in single-planar and multiplanar landing tasks, simulating sport-specific injury mechanisms. Since the anterior cruciate ligament injury rate in soccer is higher than in volleyball, we hypothesized that volleyball players would adopt safer landing strategies, especially in single-planar landing tasks. METHODS: Twenty-two soccer and 19 volleyball players pe…
