A study on volatile organic sulfide causes of odors at Philadelphia's Northeast Water Pollution Control Plant.

Volatile organic sulfide (VOS) causes of odors were studied at Philadelphia's Northeast Water Pollution Control Plant between September 11 and November 25, 2003. Results showed that dimethyl sulfide (DMS) dominated the VOS pool whenever VOS concentration rose above the background level (<50 microg/L). Methanethiol was generally less than 10% of VOS and it was mainly found at sites with limited or reduced dissolved oxygen (DO). Dimethyl disulfide occupied approximately 1% of the VOS and was often not detectable. Carbon disulfide was not detected. The concentrations of DMS varied by three orders…

Spatiotemporal Toxicity: Emerging Patterns of Industrial Water Pollution in the Coosa River Watershed, USA (2000-2020).

This study investigates the spatiotemporal dynamics of industrial toxic chemical discharges within the Coosa River watershed from 2000 to 2020 using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) dataset and advanced geospatial techniques. Findings reveal a contrasting trend in reported releases: while total on-site emissions to air, water, and land declined over time, reported surface-water discharges exhibited long-term growth and pronounced temporal variability. Nitrate and zinc compounds were among the most frequently reported chemicals released to surface waters

Difference analysis of organic matter-mediated heavy metal pollution in the sediments of urban water bodies.

Metal contents, forms, risks, sources, and their correlation with organic matter in the sediments of Beijing and Wuhan were studied to assess the difference in metal pollution between northern and southern China, as well as the associated coupling mechanisms with organic matter. The contents of Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn in overlying water in Beijing were significantly higher than those in Wuhan (p < 0.01). Conversely, the Ni content in the sediments of Wuhan was significantly higher than in Beijing (p < 0.01). Ecological risk assessments revealed that the risk potential of Cd was medium to high in bo

Bacterial and Chemical Evidence of Coastal Water Pollution from the Tijuana River in Sea Spray Aerosol.

Roughly half of the human population lives near the coast, and coastal water pollution (CWP) is widespread. Coastal waters along Tijuana, Mexico, and Imperial Beach (IB), USA, are frequently polluted by millions of gallons of untreated sewage and stormwater runoff. Entering coastal waters causes over 100 million global annual illnesses, but CWP has the potential to reach many more people on land via transfer in sea spray aerosol (SSA). Using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, we found sewage-associated bacteria in the polluted Tijuana River flowing into coastal waters and returning to land in …

Water pollution from pharmaceutical use in livestock farming: Assessing differences between livestock types and production systems.

Livestock production is a major source of pharmaceutical emissions to the environment. The current scientific discourse focuses on measuring and modeling emissions as well as assessing their risks. Although several studies corroborate the severity of pharmaceutical pollution resulting from livestock farming, differences in pollution between livestock types and production systems are largely unknown. In fact, there is no comprehensive analysis of factors influencing pharmaceutical use-the emission's source-in the diverse production systems. To address these knowledge gaps, we developed a framew

Impacts of sewage treatment works versus diffuse pollution on bacterial water quality at rural wild swimming sites.

We investigated the factors shaping bacterial water quality at rural wild swimming sites located in catchments that are dominated by peatland, woodland, grassland, and arable land, with <3% (sub)urban land cover. We quantified faecal indicator bacteria and environmental DNA (eDNA) derived markers, including antimicrobial resistance traits (AMR), in the influent and effluent of a village sewage treatment works (STW) and across five river sampling locations. If formally designated and monitored, the wild swimming sites in this study would be unlikely to meet bathing standards, primarily due to e

Biomarkers of oxidative stress in rat for assessing toxicological effects of heavy metal pollution in river water.

Increasing use of heavy metals in various fields, their environmental persistency, and poor regulatory efforts have significantly increased their fraction in river water. We studied the effect of Musi river water pollution on oxidative stress biomarkers and histopathology in rat after 28 days repeated oral treatment. River water analysis showed the presence of Zn and Pb at mg/l concentration and Ag, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Sn, and Sb at μg/l concentration. River water treatment resulted in a dose-dependent accumulation of metals in rat organs, being more in liver followed by kidney…

Sensitivity analysis using a diffuse pollution hydrologic model to assess factors affecting pesticide concentrations in river water.

We quantitatively evaluated the factors that affect the concentrations of rice-farming pesticides (an herbicide and a fungicide) in river water by a sensitivity analysis using a diffuse pollution hydrologic model. Pesticide degradation and adsorption in paddy soil affected concentrations of the herbicide pretilachlor but did not affect concentrations of the fungicide isoprothiolane. We attributed this difference to the timing of pesticide application in relation to irrigation and drainage of the rice paddy fields. The herbicide was applied more than a month before water drainage of the fields

[Effect of water pollution by oil and oil products on barrier functions of bacterial cell cytoplasmic membranes].

The effects of oil, diesel fuel, and kerosene on the electroorientational spectra and osmo-optical characteristics of bacterial cells were studied. Electroorientational spectra were found to be affected over the entire frequency range studied; changes in low-frequency (< 100 kHz) electroorientation were related to alterations in the cell surface, and those in high-frequency electroorientation, to the impairment of the barrier function of the plasma membrane. The membranotropic activity of petroleum products was also demonstrated by the osmo-optical method. Of nine bacterial species studied, Ps

Herbicides in landfill environments: multi-source characterization and priority risk pollutants in leachate and adjacent waters.

This study investigated the occurrence, distribution, and ecological risks of 29 herbicides in water bodies surrounding a landfill in North China. Analysis revealed that 24 herbicides were ubiquitously detected, though at trace concentrations (ng L-1 level). The herbicide compositions varied significantly among the leachate, groundwater, and surface water samples. Spatial distribution, together with principal component analysis and Pearson's correlation analysis, indicated diverse sources of herbicide contamination in the surrounding waters. However, the landfill is effective in preventing her
