Mirror writing in pre-school children: a pilot study.

Mirror writing refers to the production of individual letters, whole words or sentences in reverse direction. Unintentional mirror writing has been observed in young children learning to write and interpreted as the manifestation of different cognitive impairments. We report on mirror writing instances in a sample of 108 pre-school children. Results showed MW to be age-related but independent from handedness and left-right discrimination abilities. We propose an account of mirror writing as reflecting dissociation between acquired motor programmes for letter shape composition and unspecified s…

[The relationship between minimal pair reproduction and writing skills].

OBJECTIVE: It is generally accepted that dyslexia arises due to deficits in phonological processing. However, whether these deficits are based on impaired auditory processing is still subject to debate. Here we tested whether low level auditory processing is correlated with a simple phonological processing task, thus indicating a close relationship between higher sensory and lower cognitive processing. METHODS: We carried out a prospective study with 200 school children attending the third and fourth grades. The dependent variables used were just noticeable differences in intensity and freque

Women speak. Healing the wounds of homelessness through writing.

The Women Speak writing project explores the use of writing as a therapeutic process with homeless women at an urban drop-in center. The project was developed in response to the women's desire to give voice to their experiences. By speaking about and sharing the experiences of their lives, a sense of empowerment through expression began. Nursing students and faculty working at the drop-in center were challenged to re-think the traditional clinical site relationship which gives highest priority to meeting the needs of students and faculty.

Pure dysgraphia with relative sparing of lower-case writing.

We describe the cognitive analysis of a patient with acquired pure dysgraphia. She presented a peculiar dissociation between lower- and upper-case handwriting: lower-case writing was relatively spared and showed a significant superiority of words versus nonwords. Upper-case writing and oral spelling did not show lexical effects, but were affected by item length. In all modalities errors consisted mainly of single graphemic substitutions, deletions, insertions and transpositions, resulting in legal or illegal nonwords, and showed a similar distribution across letter positions. These findings we…

Sounds like cancer: first steps in sonic life writing.

This article introduces 'sonic life writing' as a new methodological approach to sharing bodily knowledge about illness experience through non-lexical sound and music. Drawing on autoethnographic research conducted during treatment for HER2+breast cancer, I argue that sonic approaches can complement existing counter-narratives by offering non-lexical modes that bypass certain constraints of dominant cancer discourse, such as metaphors of warfare. The conceptual framework of 'corporeal acoustemology' extends Steven Feld's work on ways of knowing through sound into medical and corporeal territor…

Do Ophthalmology Journals Have AI Policies for Manuscript Writing?

PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence of artificial intelligence (AI) usage policies in manuscript writing in PubMed-indexed ophthalmology journals and examine the relationship between the adoption of these policies and journal characteristics. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SUBJECTS: PubMed-indexed ophthalmology journals. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Prevalence of policies in journal guidelines regarding the use of AI in manuscript writing. METHODS: We reviewed the guidelines of 84 ophthalmology journals indexed in PubMed to determine the presence of AI-use policies for manuscript generation. We fu…

Reading-to-Writing Mediation model of higher-order literacy.

INTRODUCTION: Writing difficulties frequently manifest comorbidly with reading challenges, and reading is implicated in particular acts of writing, such as reviewing and editing. Despite what is known, however, there remain significant barriers to understanding the nature of reading-writing relations, as few studies are comprehensive in the number and types of literacy skills evaluated. This study consists of a secondary data analysis of two studies employing structural equation modeling (SEM) to evaluate relations among reading and writing components skills independently, using the Direct and…

Writing Development in DHH Students: A Bimodal Bilingual Approach.

This article describes the lexical and syntactic development of written narratives in 24 deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students aged betwee … l trend in which increased age predicted more complex texts. Age of acquisition did not predict any writing outcome, which is suggested to occur because all participants were exposed to language early, that is, within the critical time window for language acquisition. Sign language proficiency showed a tendency to predict adjective density and number of c …

Scientific writing in physiology: confused/misused terms and phrases.

One aspect of effective scientific writing in physiology is the ability to select the correct words or short phrases to use when developing your narratives. This task is made difficult because many commonly used terms have seemingly viable alternatives, leading to confusion, uncertainty, and possible misuse of those words and phrases. In this perspective, we attempt to provide general guidance when selecting between or among options for commonly confused and misused terms in scientific writing. We have organized inaccurate, confusing, commonly misused, and misleading words and phrases into sep…

Preventing Children From Developing Dyslexia: A Premature Writing Hypothesis.

It has been argued that dyslexia may develop in strongly left eye dominant children through learning to write using ipsilateral, right hemisphere motor pathways. New light on this theory has been cast by recent findings of atypical enhanced corpus callosum white matter in children with dyslexia, reflecting right to left hemisphere communication that is resistant to intensive remedial reading intervention. Enhanced corpus callosum white matter is consistent with uninhibited right to left hemisphere ipsilateral mirror-motor innervation, manifested as frequent mirror-letter writing errors in chil…

Two year outcomes of poststroke writing and reading disorders.

Poststroke language disorders are frequent and include aphasia, alexia, agraphia, and acalculia. These disorders refer to an acquired inability to read, write and calculate. In this study, we evaluated the two year outcomes of writing and reading disorders in poststroke patients, the natural course, recovery and mortality. We evaluated all the patients with stroke who were admitted to the Department of Neurology, University Clinical Centre Tuzla in period of six months, who developed poststroke alexia, agraphia, acalculia, or different combinations of these language disorders. Outcome of these…

Writer's cramp: increased dorsal premotor activity during intended writing.

Simple writer's cramp (WC) is a task-specific form of dystonia, characterized by abnormal movements and postures of the hand during writing. It is extremely task-specific, since dystonic symptoms can occur when a patient uses a pencil for writing, but not when it is used for sharpening. Maladaptive plasticity, loss of inhibition, and abnormal sensory processing are important pathophysiological elements of WC. However, it remains unclear how those elements can account for its task-specificity. We used fMRI to isolate cerebral alterations associated with the task-specificity of simple WC. Subjec…

Early writing deficits in preschoolers with oral language difficulties.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether preschool children with language impairments (LI), a group with documented reading difficulties, also experience writing difficulties. In addition, a purpose was to examine if the writing outcomes differed when children had concomitant cognitive deficits in addition to oral language problems. A group of 293 preschool children were administered an assessment battery that included measures to examine oral language, nonverbal cognition, emergent reading, and writing. Children were divided into four groups based on their language and cognitive p…

Idiopathic torsion dystonia and writing tremor within a family.

A 12-year-old boy had suffered from idiopathic torsion dystonia since the age of 8 years, which had never been relieved with pharmacologic treatment. His mother had exhibited primary tremor upon writing from the age of 10 years, but had not yet developed dystonia. Surface electromyography revealed paradoxical muscular contraction of Westphal in both patients, although the main abnormal findings in the proband and his mother were continuous tonic discharges in the arms and 4-5-Hz grouped discharges in the neck, respectively. The simultaneous occurrence of dystonia and writing tremor within one …
