Monitoring cardiovascular disease in Zimbabwe: a review of needs and options.

The relative and absolute importance of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in countries of sub-Saharan Africa is assumed to be increasing, but information on morbidity, mortality and prevalence of risk factors is scant. This paper reviews available information on CVD in Zimbabwe; in particular, which type of CVD is important, which segments of the population are affected, which risk factors are relevant and at what levels they are present. Based on the findings, options for monitoring CVD rates and risk factors in Zimbabwe are discussed. For the purpose of identifying risk groups and monitoring secu…

Cancer in the African population of Harare, Zimbabwe, 1990-1992.

The data presented from the population-based cancer registry in Harare, Zimbabwe, represent the first information on the incidence of cancer in Southern Africa for almost 20 years. In the African population in Zimbabwe there are several features in common with other countries in sub-Saharan Africa: high rates of liver, prostate and cervix cancer, low rates of large-bowel cancer and breast cancer. Also, as reported from southern and south-eastern Africa, there are relatively high incidence rates of cancers of the oesophagus, bladder and (in men) lung. The AIDS epidemic has given rise to a strik…

Infections with Babesia canis and Ehrlichia canis in dogs in Zimbabwe.

Of 105 dogs examined at a veterinary hospital in Harare, Zimbabwe, 52 per cent had antibodies reactive with Ehrlichia canis in indirect fluorescent antibody tests, 26 per cent had Babesia canis parasites in peripheral blood smears and 17 per cent had both infections. None of the dogs with serological evidence of ehrlichiosis had typical E canis morulae detectable in blood smears. The infections were regarded as incidental findings not readily related to the reasons for examination in 46 per cent of the dogs with antibodies to E canis and 17 per cent of the dogs with both infections. The most c…

Communal farmers and tick control--a field study in Zimbabwe.

Intensive dipping of cattle to control ticks and tick-borne diseases precludes development of endemic stability to the latter. Alternative control strategies have been recommended which reduce the frequency of dipping and permit the expression of tick resistance and endemic stability. However, such strategies imply acceptance by cattle owners of higher tick burdens. In this study the views of a group of communal farmers to tick control are described and the impact of these views upon adoption of other strategies is discussed.

Genital ulcers and transmission of HIV among couples in Zimbabwe.

Seventy-five married men found to be positive for HIV-1 in Harare, Zimbabwe, were interviewed in order to define behaviours associated with acquisition of infection and to determine factors associated with transmission of infection to their wives. The majority of infected men reported sexual intercourse with multiple heterosexual partners and female prostitutes, and gave a history of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). All subjects denied homosexual activity and parenteral drug abuse. Serological testing of the wives of seropositive men showed that 45 (60%) were HIV-antibody-positive. Wives …

The effects of war on the control of diseases of livestock in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe).

The disruption of veterinary services in the tribal areas of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) during seven years of conflict resulted in serious epidemics of disease. The cessation of dipping was followed by the death of an estimated one million cattle from tick-borne disease. Heavy mortality followed the disruption of control measures for trypanosomiasis. Foot-and-mouth disease and anthrax spread widely in the tribal areas. Rabies, normally restricted to areas bordering Botswana and Mocambique, became widespread. A marked increase in human deaths from anthrax and rabies occurred.

Climate change, disaster management and primary health care in Zimbabwe.

The health crises related to climate change in African countries are predicted to get worse and more prevalent. The response to catastrophic events such as cyclones, flooding and landslides must be rapid and well-coordinated. Slower adverse events such as droughts, heat stress and food insecurity must similarly be anticipated, planned for and resourced. There are lessons to be learnt by the health system following the crisis created by Cyclone Idai in Zimbabwe during March 2019, which required a massive humanitarian response to mitigate the impact of torrential rainfall on lives and livelihood…

Anthrax outbreak investigation in Tengwe, Mashonaland West Province, Zimbabwe, 2022.

BACKGROUND: Anthrax continues to be a disease of public health concern in Zimbabwe. Between December 2021 and February 2022, Tengwe reported 36 cases of human anthrax. Gastrointestinal anthrax has the potential to cause serious outbreaks leading to loss of human life. We investigated the outbreak, identified the risk factors using one health approach to inform outbreak control. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted descriptive analysis of the outbreak and a 1:2 unmatched case control study to identify risk factors for anthrax. A case was any Tengwe resident who developed an ulcer and/or abdomin…

Systemic Sclerosis in Zimbabwe: Autoantibody Biomarkers, Clinical, and Laboratory Correlates.

INTRODUCTION: Systemic sclerosis (SScl) is an autoimmune disease whose prevalence is rarely reported in Africa. Autoantibodies are the biomarkers of the condition, precede overt disease and determine disease phenotypes. SSc specific autoantibodies also vary between racial groupings. Objective: To investigate the clinical and laboratory characteristics of Zimbabwean patients who were reactive SSc specific autoantibodies. MATERIALS AND METHOD: 240 patients, 173 of them female with SSc specific autoantibodies were included. Autoantibodies were detected by indirect immunofluorescence microscopy a…

HIV prevalence and trends from data in Zimbabwe, 1997-2004.

BACKGROUND: This paper brings together data from a variety of reports to provide a basis for assessing future steps for responding to and monitoring the HIV epidemic in Zimbabwe. METHOD: Data reported from four antenatal clinic (ANC) surveys conducted between 2000 and 2004, two small local studies in Zimbabwe conducted from 1997 through 2003, four general population surveys from 1999 through 2003, and service statistics covering 1990 through 2004 were used to describe recent trends in HIV prevalence and incidence, behaviour change, and programme provision. RESULTS: HIV prevalence among pregn…

Neurological complications of human immunodeficiency virus infection in Zimbabwe-2005.

Zimbabwe is a high prevalence area for HIV infection, and provides opportunities for studying complications of AIDS in both antiretroviral naive and treated groups of patients. Figures for HIV prevalence are among the highest in the world, but the number of people receiving treatment is very small. Economic and political factors contribute to this important health crisis. Opportunistic diseases as a whole and their relative frequencies of presentation in southern Africa are discussed, emphasizing the lead role of tuberculosis. The limited data that do exist regarding neurological complications…

Capsular serogroups of Pasteurella multocida isolated from animals in Zimbabwe.

Pasteurella multocida is isolated from a variety of disease conditions from different animal species in our diagnostic laboratory. In order to determine serogroup distribution among the isolates, an indirect haemagglutination test using glutaraldehyde-fixed sheep red blood cells was employed. A serological examination of 79 isolates revealed that 47/79 were of capsular serogroup A, 11/79 capsular serogroup D, 4/79 capsular serogroup B and 17/79 were untypable strains. None of the isolates belonged to either serogroup E or F. All those from cases of classical pasteurellosis could be grouped, bu

Trial of labour after previous caesarean section in rural Zimbabwe.

OBJECTIVE: Vaginal delivery after previous caesarean section is widely accepted in Western countries. Is a trial of labour in rural Africa also safe for mother and child? STUDY DESIGN: In a case control study in rural Zimbabwe the outcome of labour of 281 women who had one or more previous caesarean sections was compared with 4501 women who had no previous caesarean section. Maternal and perinatal mortality, the percentage of vaginal birth and factors related to the achievement of vaginal delivery were studied. Data were tested for statistical significance with a Mantel-Haenszel equation for …
