We have used the polymerase chain reaction and single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) methods to analyse the COL10A1 gene, which encodes collagen type X, in DNA samples from patients with metaphyseal dysplasia type Schmid (SMCD) and other related forms of metaphyseal dysplasia. Five cases of SMCD were sporadic and three others were familial. Abnormal SSCP profiles were observed in six instances. In two families, the altered pattern segregated with the phenotype. The heterozygous mutations corresponded to a glycine substitution by glutamic acid at position 595 and to an asparagine subst

We have examined the general and skeletal manifestations of osteopetrosis in a new, mild osteopetrotic mutation in the rat, microphalmia blanc (mib). Newborn mutant (mib) rats exhibit the typical skeletal deformities and sclerosis of osteopetrosis at birth, which are reduced significantly during the first postnatal month but don't disappear entirely up to 8 months later. Osteoclast numbers, staining for TRAP and TraATPase, and bone resorption are reduced in mutants during the first 2 postnatal weeks but improve by 1 month. In mutants, serum concentrations of calcium and phosphorus are normal,

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility, fragility, and other signs of connective tissue involvement. In addition to these, the type VI variant of the disease has some special characteristics such as kyphoscoliosis and ocular abnormalities. The biochemical abnormality in most patients with this autosomal recessively inherited type VI variant is a deficiency in the activity of lysyl hydroxylase (EC 1.14.11.4), the enzyme catalyzing the formation of hydroxylysine in collagens and other proteins with collagen-like amino acid

Failure is a central feature of competitive sport, yet research has predominantly focused on athletes' coping processes while comparatively little attention has been paid to how applied sport psychologists make professional decisions in failure situations characterized by varying accountability demands. Drawing on professional judgment and accountability frameworks, the present study examined external scrutiny as a contextual accountability condition associated with practitioners' emotional responses and intervention prioritization following failure. Using a within-person vignette-based design

This explanatory sequential mixed-methods study gave qualitative evidence interpretive priority while using the quantitative strand as supplementary and contextualizing evidence. It examined how family, school, pedagogical, and learner-use conditions were associated with perceived AI-supported learning capability among students in six rural lower-secondary schools in China. The quantitative strand drew on 486 valid student questionnaires, supplemented by contextual questionnaires from 24 teachers, and described sample patterns and selected associations. The qualitative strand comprised 32 semi

BACKGROUND: Acceptance of containment measures during a pandemic depends not only on perceived effectiveness but also on personal experience, individual beliefs, and transparent public health communication.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the perceived usefulness of 15 non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to contain the spread of COVID-19, the association with personal experience, temporal perspective, individual beliefs, and public demands for accountability for politicians and scientists.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional online survey, 5116 adults in Germany rated the perceived usefulness of 15 pande

BACKGROUND: This qualitative study explored how people retrospectively described their experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic. It aimed how these experiences are remembered and interpreted over time.
METHODS: A qualitative study design was employed, based on short texts written by members of the public during a performative intervention in public space. The texts were thematically analyzed to identify common experiences and emotions.
RESULTS: The findings show that participants described the pandemic not only as a health crisis but also as a major social and emotional challenge. Feelings of fe

We developed the Interdisciplinary Social Accountability Conference in Healthcare to address educational gaps and empower learners to advocate for healthcare needs. This conference aimed to strengthen social accountability competencies in students through three areas: (1) a learner-led planning model that promotes initiative-taking and leadership, (2) interactive sessions on locally relevant topics, and (3) a student research showcase to foster interdisciplinary dialogue. Survey findings demonstrated high engagement and positive experiences with cross-disciplinary networking. We encourage inst

INTRODUCTION: Identifying social risk factors during the perinatal period may improve pregnancy-related outcomes. In 2018, the Massachusetts Medicaid program implemented an accountable care organization (ACO)-which required social risk factor screening-under 2 ACO model types: Model A (health system/Medicaid managed care plan partnership model) and Model B (primary care practice model).
METHODS: Using the 2016-2020 Massachusetts All Payer Claims Database and a difference-in-differences (DiD) design, we compared changes in any social risk factor documentation (ie, ICD-10 Z-codes) for Medicaid-

According to figures from GLOBOCAN and the European Cancer Information System, nearly 40% of breast cancers occur in women aged 70 and over in France. Breast cancer, the most common cancer in women, has been the subject of several specific studies on the elderly population. As such, it provides numerous examples of the possible and necessary adaptation of strategies according to age, the increased risks of certain treatments, and the efforts to be made with the patients concerned to trigger a participatory reform movement in research, to make it more useful for the growing and already predomin

Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) is one of the most common endocrine conditions affecting hundreds of millions of women globally. The former name polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) was inaccurate, underpinning the robust nomenclature change process. This review historically traces renaming efforts up to, including and beyond the PMOS global renaming process. A systematic search of Medline and Embase screened according to PRISMA 2020 methodology, identified 30 eligible papers (1995-2026). The name PCOS was repeatedly challenged on scientific grounds, with the absence of increased o

OBJECTIVE: A growing body of empirical research traces the impact of social media use on young women's psychological wellbeing. The aim of the present article is to explore young female users' affective relationship with social media platforms in the context of gendered, postfeminist self-making.
DESIGN: Drawing on dialogical self-theory, this study analyses the interplay between different voices-of-the-self in participants' accounts of social media use.
RESULTS: Participants construct social media use as a 'double-edged sword'. Being exposed to idealised content elicits self-othering, i.e.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development promotes multi-stakeholder partnerships (MSPs) to achieve sustainable development, including global health-related goals. MSPs typically involve three or more types of actors, including states, corporations, philanthropic organizations, civil society, and multilateral institutions. While MSPs often operate in sectors that are crucial for the realization of health-related rights, they are seldom analyzed through a human rights lens. This paper will advance knowledge in this field through an exploration of the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator (ACT-

BACKGROUND: Social accountability aligns the health demands and priorities of the community and the commitment of medical schools. Existing literature has proposed contextually distinctive interventions encompassing geographical initiatives, institutions and communities, and systematic categorizations for the implementation of social accountability in a rural setting. Research concerning social accountability implementation strategies has been insufficient. This study provides an overview of the existing literature surrounding the social accountability practice of physicians and medical school
