[Impact of aging on sexuality].

Numerous authors on sexual behaviors have studied the link between the persistence of a sexually active life and progressive aging. The knowledge of sexual health in the elderly has shown that biological sexual aging is extremely diverse and heterogeneous in men as well as in women, and contradicts the stereotype of age that would inevitably alter the sexual biological response in each human. Sexual diseases (lubrication, dyspareunia, erectile dysfunction, inability to achieve orgasm) and diseases of aging that impact sexual function have a growing incidence but don't never touch 100% of indiv

Potential role of IL-18 in the immunopathogenesis of AIDS, HIV-associated lipodystrophy and related clinical conditions.

IL-18 is a pleiotropic and multifunctional proinflammatory cytokine that is often produced in response to a viral infection. The biological activities of the cytokine are tightly controlled by its natural antagonist, IL-18 binding protein (IL-18BP), as well as by activation of caspase-1, which cleaves the precursor form of IL-18 into its biologically mature form. The cytokine plays an important role in both innate and adaptive antiviral immune responses. Depending upon the context, it can promote TH1, TH2 and TH17 responses. Increased serum concentrations of IL-18 and concomitantly decreased c

Organizational transitions in awareness: a framework of access, coordination, and regulation.

Consciousness research often uses overlapping terms such as consciousness, awareness, conscious access, subjective experience, reportability, selfhood, and metacognition. This conceptual compression can make it difficult to distinguish different awareness-related processes or to identify which capacities are preserved, disrupted, or restored across altered states. This paper proposes an organizational framework for distinguishing awareness processes in terms of constrained access, representational coordination, adaptive regulation, and recursive self-modeling. The framework distinguishes three

Breaking the guardian of the genome: TP53 dysfunction in myeloid neoplasms.

Since its discovery more than 40 years ago, TP53 has emerged as the most iconic gene in cancer biology. Early studies of mutant constructs led researchers to misclassify TP53 as an oncogene, a misconception later resolved when wild-type p53 was shown to function as a tumor suppressor. p53 is now widely recognized as the central guardian of genomic integrity, coordinating DNA-damage responses, cell-cycle control, senescence, apoptosis, and metabolic stress adaptation. In myeloid neoplasms, TP53 mutations occur in only ∼10-15% of cases but confer a disproportionately adverse clinical impact mark

A hypersensitive neuromorphic airflow sensor inspired by vision-compensatory scorpion mechanoreceptors for respiratory pattern analysis.

Efficient acquisition of spatial airflow information is vital for organisms to orient within complex environments and detect predators. For scorpions with degraded vision, specialized mechanosensory trichobothria provide a crucial vision-compensatory mechanism, enabling hypersensitive perception of subtle airflow fluctuations. Inspired by this evolutionary adaptation, we present a biomimetic neuromorphic airflow sensor (BNAS) integrating a bioinspired lever-amplification structure with a pressure-induced ionic enrichment mechanism. This synergistic design inherits the hypersensitive anemosensa

SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.2.86 and JN.1 expand tropism in human proximal intestinal epithelium.

Omicron SARS-CoV-2 has diversified into multiple sub-lineages, complicating assessment of their intrinsic phenotypes due to background population immunity. We compare replication and biological characteristics of variants from BA.1 to JN.1 using human bronchial and lung explants, airway organoids, colon cells, and proximal intestinal enteroids. XBB.1.5 and EG.5.1 achieve higher replication titres in respiratory tissues than BA.2.86 and JN.1, indicating enhanced respiratory fitness. EG.5.1 displays dual cell-entry pathways and greater replication in alveolar epithelial cells, supporting increas

Nanotechnology for sustainable agriculture: advances, applications and emerging role of multiomics.

While agricultural modernization has driven significant agricultural advancements, it has also fuelled agricultural pollution despite agriculture being the prime beneficiary of technological innovations more than any other sector. Working at the nanoscale (1-100 nm), nanoagriculture offers revolutionary biotechnological and agri-industrial applications. As 'magic bullets', nanoparticles can encapsulate herbicides, fertilizers, pesticides or even genes, and deliver directly to plant cell organelles for controlled release. Nano bio-sensors complement this approach by tracking plant growth, monit

Advancements and challenges of partial denitrification/anammox technology: Implementation strategies for plug-flow municipal wastewater treatment.

This review systematically summarizes the latest advances, key challenges, and engineering application strategies of partial denitrification/anammox (PD/A) technology, with a particular focus on plug-flow biosystems. The plug-flow process is widely used, yet its effluent often fails standards due to low C/N ratios. To address this carbon deficiency, PD/A leverages its own low-carbon metabolic feature to offer a promising upgrade pathway toward compliant discharge. Here, this review highlights latest strategies developed to enhance nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) in plug-flow PD/A systems, in

Lactate Metabolism in the Intervertebral Disc: Mechanistic Insights and Pathological Implications.

The intervertebral disc (IVD) is the largest avascular structure in the human body, and its nucleus pulposus (NP) cells predominantly generate large amounts of lactate through glycolysis, accompanied by an acidic microenvironment-features that represent characteristic metabolic traits of disc cells. In recent years, knowledge of the biological roles of lactate has undergone a conceptual shift. On the one hand, lactate can serve as a context-dependent auxiliary biofuel in specific regions of the IVD, particularly within annulus fibrosus (AF) regions adjacent to the NP. On the other hand, lactat

Evolutionary analysis of the Dof family in plants and identification of its members in tobacco.

DNA-binding with One Finger (Dof) transcription factors are plant-specific regulators involved in diverse biological processes, including growth, development, and stress responses. However, the Dof family in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) remains poorly characterized. Here, we performed a genome-wide identification and comprehensive analysis of Dof genes in tobacco, revealing 75 NtDof members. Through phylogenetic reconstruction, gene structure analysis, and cis-regulatory element prediction, we classified these genes into seven subfamilies and found that the CDF clade exhibits conserved exon-

Nanodevice Approaches for Detecting Micro- and Nanoplastics in Complex Matrices.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are increasingly recognized as pervasive environmental contaminants with profound implications for ecosystems and human health. Their small size, compositional diversity, and occurrence across complex matrices-including water, soil, food, and biological samples-pose substantial analytical challenges. Conventional techniques such as vibrational spectroscopy, chromatographic analysis, and electron microscopy have yielded critical insights into MNP composition, morphology, and distribution; however, these methods often face limitations in sensitivity, throughput, an

Carbonic anhydrase IX: An atypical target for innovative therapies in cancer.

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs), are metallo-enzymes implicated in several pathophysiological processes where tissue pH regulation is required. CA IX is a tumor-associated CA isoform induced by hypoxia and involved in the adaptation of tumor cells to acidosis. Indeed, several tumor-driving pathways can induce CA IX expression, and this in turn has been associated to cancer cells invasion and metastatic features as well as to induction of stem-like features, drug resistance and recurrence. After its functional and structural characterization CA IX targeting approaches have been developed to inhibit i

A multi-omics dataset of the response to early plant polysaccharide ingestion in rabbits.

The transition from a milk-based diet to exclusive solid feeding deeply modifies microbiota-host crosstalk. Specifically, early ingestion of plant polysaccharides would be one of the main nutritional components to drive host-microbiota-interaction. To capture the effects of polysaccharides early-life nutrition (starch vs rapidly fermentable fiber) on the holobiont development, we investigated on the one hand the gut bacteriome and metabolome and on the other hand the transcriptome of two host gut tissues. Rabbit model was used to study post-natal co-development of the gut microbiota and its ho

Zoonotic diseases: New directions in human-animal pathology.

Zoonotic diseases-human diseases of animal origin-represent one of the world's greatest health challenges, both today and in the past. Since the Neolithic, zoonotic diseases have been one of the major factors shaping and influencing human adaptation. Archaeology is ideally situated to provide the long view on human-animal-pathogen relationships through combining cultural, environmental and biological datasets, yet long-term studies of linked human and animal records have often been overlooked and undertheorized. The seven papers in this special issue "Zoonotic diseases: New directions in human

Aberrant lipid metabolism in hepatocellular carcinoma cells as well as immune microenvironment: A review.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary malignancy of the liver with a high worldwide prevalence and poor prognosis. Researches are urgently needed on its molecular pathogenesis and biological characteristics. Metabolic reprogramming for adaptation to the tumour microenvironment (TME) has been recognized as a hallmark of cancer. Dysregulation of lipid metabolism especially fatty acid (FA) metabolism, which involved in the alternations of the expression and activity of lipid-metabolizing enzymes, is a hotspot in recent study, and it may be involved in HCC development and progression. Meanwh

Enkephalins: Endogenous Analgesics with an Emerging Role in Stress Resilience.

Psychological stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension that results from adverse or demanding circumstances. Chronic stress is well known to induce anxiety disorders and major depression; it is also considered a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. Stress resilience is a positive outcome that is associated with preserved cognition and healthy aging. Resilience presents psychological and biological characteristics intrinsic to an individual conferring protection against the development of psychopathologies in the face of adversity. How can we promote or improve resilience to c

Intrahost milieu modulates production of outer membrane vesicles, vesicle-associated Shiga toxin 2a and cytotoxicity in Escherichia coli O157:H7 and O104:H4.

Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) are important virulence tools of enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), but other biological functions of these nanostructures are unknown. We tested the hypothesis that modulation of OMV production enables EHEC to resist the intrahost environment during infection by investigating if simulated human gastrointestinal conditions affect OMV production in EHEC O157:H7 and O104:H4. All the conditions tested including a low pH, simulated ileal and colonic media, presence of mucin, intestinal epithelial cell lysate or antimicrobial peptides, as well as iron limitat

Multi-analytical platform metabolomic approach to study miltefosine mechanism of action and resistance in Leishmania.

Miltefosine (MT) (hexadecylphosphocholine) was implemented to cope with resistance against antimonials, the classical treatment in Leishmaniasis. Given the scarcity of anti- Leishmania (L) drugs and the increasing appearance of resistance, there is an obvious need for understanding the mechanism of action and development of such resistance. Metabolomics is an increasingly popular tool in the life sciences due to it being a relatively fast and accurate technique that can be applied either with a particular focus or in a global manner to reveal new knowledge about biological systems. [Radiology of radiosurgery].

Proper understanding of the fundamentals of radiosurgery and the main principles of radiobiology is a key point for the development and adaptation of therapeutic strategies and for the definition of indications. The prediction of local effects of radiosurgery requires taking into account both the target Volume and the marginal dose (energy,...) and not only the marginal dose which alone is poorly predictive of the outcome. Other additional factors such as topography, age, previous irradiations,... are likely to influence this risk relationship. The comparison of different dose regimens leads t
