BACKGROUND: Cefuroxime is a second-generation lactamase-stable cephalosporin. Its use is on the increase, and in recent years several reactions to this compound have been reported.
OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of selective reaction to cefuroxime, showing a boosted immunoglobulin (Ig)E response after administration of this drug.
METHODS: Specific serum IgE antibodies to several cephalosporins were monitored in a 52-year-old man after a selective systemic anaphylaxis attributable to cefuroxime, who showed a good tolerance to penicillin V during a single-blind, placebo-controlled challenge.

We describe six patients with severe occasional anaphylaxis, caused by stings of bumblebees. Sensitization to bumblebee venom was confirmed by intracutaneous tests and RAST with purified bumblebee venom. Three patients changed their occupation and will probably not be stung by bumblebees in the future. The other patients started immunotherapy with newly purified bumblebee venom extract. A technique for elicitation of simultaneous passive cutaneous anaphylaxis and reverse passive Arthus reactions in the same animal is described. Experimental evidence is presented to substantiate previous findings that these two skin reactions, inducible by the same BSA-rabbit anti-BSA system, are distinctive in several species. The reactions of synthetic polypeptides with their antibodies may be followed by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis, but not by the reverse technique. The reactions were optimal when 18 hours elapsed between the injection of the serum and that of the antigen. Materials which were non-immunogenic as followed by the precipitin test, were shown to be non-immunogenic also by PCA technique. The antisera to various synthetic polypeptide antigens cross-reacted with many chemically related polypeptides. As little as 0.12 μg. of antibody could be detected in 1 ml. of diluted antisera by the PCA technique.
