Huntington's disease and the striatal medium spiny neuron: cell-autonomous and non-cell-autonomous mechanisms of disease.

Huntington's disease is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by a mutation in the gene encoding the protein huntingtin on chromosome 4. The mutation is an expanded CAG repeat in the first exon, encoding a polyglutamine tract. If the polyglutamine tract is > 40, penetrance is 100% and death is inevitable. Despite the widespread expression of huntingtin, HD has long been considered primarily as a disease of the striatum. It is characterized by selective vulnerability with dysfunction followed by death of the medium size spiny neuron. Considerable effort is being expended to determine whether st

Cell-to-cell communication and vascular dementia.

OBJECTIVE: VaD is the second-most common form of dementia, second only to that caused by AD. As the name indicates, VaD is predominantly considered a disease caused by vascular phenomena. METHODS: In this invited review, we introduce the reader to recent developments in defining VaD as a unique form of dementia by reviewing the current pertinent literature. We discuss the clinical and experimental evidence that supports the notion that the microcirculation, specifically cell-to-cell communication, likely contributes to the development of VaD. Through exploration of the concept of the NVU, we

Application of remote sensing for surveillance of snail habitats in Poyang Lake, China.

OBJECTIVE: To identify snail habitats and monitor the changes by combining remote sensing technique with the ground-based ecological data. METHODS: Of 100 survey sites selected throughout Poyang Lake, 75 were randomly identified from 574 land mass units: 50 were from snail habitats and 25 were from non-snail habitats based on a historical survey (1982-1984); 25 sites with habitats that did not have snails were also selected. Each site, covering 10,000 m2, was divided into a grid of 100 cells from which 20 cells were randomly selected. Snails, when present, were collected from a 4 m2 frame pla

Glial-neurotrophic mechanisms in Down syndrome.

Complex interactions and interconnectivity between neurons are hallmarks of normal neuronal differentiation and development. Neurons also interact with other cell types, notably glia, and rely on substances released by glia for their normal function. A deficit in glial response may disturb this critical neuronal-glial-neuronal interaction in Down syndrome (DS), leading to loss of neurons and other defects of development, and contribute to cognitive limitation and early onset of Alzheimer disease. The hypothesis this paper will discuss is that normal neural development involves an activity-depe

The potential of geographical information systems and remote sensing in the epidemiology and control of human helminth infections.

Geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technologies are being used increasingly to study the spatial and temporal patterns of infectious diseases. For helminth infections, however, such applications have only recently begun despite the recognition that infection distribution patterns in endemic areas may have profound effects on parasite population dynamics and therefore the design and implementation of successful control programmes. Here, we review the early applications of these technologies to the major human helminths (geohelminths, schistosomes and the major lymphati

The Legend of the Buffalo Chest.

BACKGROUND: The "buffalo chest" is a condition in which a simultaneous bilateral pneumothorax occurs due to a communication of both pleural cavities caused by an iatrogenic or idiopathic fenestration of the mediastinum. This rare condition is known by many clinicians because of a particular anecdote which stated that Native Americans could kill a North American bison with a single arrow in the chest by creating a simultaneous bilateral pneumothorax, due to the animal's peculiar anatomy in which there is one contiguous pleural space due to an incomplete mediastinum. RESEARCH QUESTION: What evi

Cows' reproductive performances and parity order influences the cervicovaginal fungal community.

Fungi have already been described as etiological agents of reproductive diseases such as endometritis and infertility in cows. However, few studies have been developed to elucidate the entire cervicovaginal fungal communities in cows. Therefore, our study aimed to characterize the fungal community present in the cervix of cows with different reproductive performances. Cervicovaginal mucus was collected from 36 Angus breed cows (1.5-12 years old) on a commercial beef cattle ranch. Twenty-one cows had a history of infertility in the year prior to the collection, showing early return to estrus. T

Digit innervation of the thoracic limb of Criollo horses: Anatomical description and consequences to perineural blocks.

Criollo horse breeding is an important economic activity in South America. Because of their athletic performance, these animals tend to show great incidence of musculoskeletal disorders, many of them diagnosed by means of perineural blocks. However, incorrect interpretation of these blocks may be due to anatomical differences in nerve distribution. The objective of this study was to describe the innervation of the digit region of thoracic limbs in Criollo horses, in order to improve the interpretation of tests for claudication diagnosis based on nerve block. Thirty thoracic limbs from Criollo

Safe laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a community setting, N = 762.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) can be introduced into a community with morbidity and mortality rates equal to that of open cholecystectomy. The entire general surgical community of Greensboro, NC, learned the technique of LC on animal models prior to offering this innovation to the community. Over the ensuing 12 months, they served as surgeons or assistant surgeons to each other on 762 LCs with morbidity and mortality rates comparable to open cholecystectomy. This retrospective study examined the first 1 year of experience beginning 8/13/90. This work represents all of the LCs performed in

Low levels of antimicrobial resistance amongst canine staphylococci isolates from a remote First Nations community.

Little is known about the ecology and resistance profiles of staphylococci on dogs in remote First Nations communities, nor how this might differ compared to isolates from other environments, people or animals. To investigate the prevalence, species diversity and proportion of antimicrobial resistance of staphylococci isolates in a dog population from a remote First Nations community in the Northern Territory, Australia, eighty-three dogs were sampled over two sampling periods in 2021 and 2022, using a house-to-house sampling methodology. Nine species of staphylococci were identified, in addit

Reducing transmission in multiple settings is required to eliminate the risk of major Ebola outbreaks: a mathematical modelling study.

The Ebola virus (EV) persists in animal populations, with zoonotic transmission to humans occurring every few months or years. When zoonotic transmission arises, it is important to understand which interventions are most effective at preventing a major outbreak driven by human-to-human transmission. Here, we analyse a mathematical model of EV transmission and calculate the probability of a major outbreak starting from a single introduced case. We consider community, funeral and healthcare facility transmission and conduct sensitivity analyses to explore the effects of non-pharmaceutical interv

Where Do They Come From and Where Do They Go? Socioeconomic Patterns in Dog Acquisition and Rehoming.

This research examines the ways people acquire dogs in the US as well as the ways the dogs leave the household and the way these differ by income level in seven geographically diverse study communities. A web-based panel survey was distributed and received 6318 responses. Individuals were asked a series of demographic and socioeconomic questions as well as how they acquired their current dogs, how previous dogs left their household, and where they left to. The results indicate that the likelihood of acquiring a dog through friends and family decreased monotonically as income increased, while t

Characterization of fungal communities transmitted from sow to piglet.

UNLABELLED: Understanding the composition of the healthy gut microbiota in neonatal piglets is critical during the early stages of life, particularly in the context of environmental change and immune development. The gut microbiota of newborn piglets is closely related to that of their sows. However, research on the characteristics of gut microbiota transmitted from mother to offspring has primarily focused on gut bacteria, with comparatively less attention given to gut fungi. In this study, vaginal and fecal samples were collected from 12 sows, along with fecal samples from 12 newborn piglets

Location and habitat specificity structure benthic microbial assemblages in a temperate seagrass ecosystem.

Seagrass meadows are globally distributed coastal ecosystems that provide habitats for diverse species and facilitate ecosystem services, such as carbon storage and nutrient cycling. However, anthropogenic activities and climate change are causing seagrass decline worldwide, broadly impacting ecosystem functioning. Although macrofaunal communities in seagrass habitats are relatively well studied, benthic microbial assemblages (including microeukaryote groups such as protists and microbial metazoa) remain underexplored. In this study, we used environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding to characteri

Health authorities' health risk communication with the public during pandemics: a rapid scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Responses from the H1N1 swine flu pandemic and the recent COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic provide an opportunity for insight into the role of health authorities' ways of communicating health risk information to the public. We aimed to synthesise the existing evidence regarding different modes of communication used by health authorities in health risk communication with the public during a pandemic. METHODS: We conducted a rapid scoping review. MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched for publications in English from January 2009 through October 2020, covering both the full H1N1 pandemic and

Kiss2 as a Regulator of Lh and Fsh Secretion via Paracrine/Autocrine Signaling in the Teleost Fish European Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax).

Kisspeptins are key players in the neuroendocrine control of puberty and other reproductive processes in mammals. Several studies have demonstrated that the KISS/GPR54 system is expressed by gonadotrophs, but in vitro studies assessing the direct stimulatory effects of kisspeptin on gonadotropin secretion in the pituitary have provided conflicting results. In this study, we investigated whether kisspeptin directly influences the reproductive function of sea bass pituitary. First, the highly active peptides Kiss1-15 and Kiss2-12 were used to stimulate dispersed sea bass pituitary cells obtained

GnRH signaling in intrauterine tissues.

Type I GnRH (GnRH-I, GNRH1) and type II GnRH (GnRH-II, GNRH2), each encoded by separate genes, have been identified in humans. The tissue distribution and functional regulation of GnRH-I and GnRH-II clearly differ despite their comparable cDNA and genomic structures. These hormones exert their effects by binding to cell surface transmembrane G protein coupled receptors and stimulating the Gq/11 subfamily of G proteins. The hypothalamus and pituitary are the main origin and target sites of GnRH, but numerous studies have demonstrated that extra-hypothalamic GnRH and extra-pituitary GnRH recepto

Promoting risk communication and community engagement during Mpox outbreak in fragile conflict zones of Eastern DRC.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) declared a national outbreak of monkeypox (Mpox) in December 2022, and in February 2023, an incident management system was implemented. As of May 26, 2024, the DRC had recorded 7851 cases of Mpox, with 384 fatalities. The number of confirmed cases in the province has been increasing. Of all cases, 117 (36 %) were individuals living in camps for Internally Displaced People (IDP) in North and South Kivu provinces. These provinces are currently considered as foci of the outbreak. The challenges of this outbreak in Eastern DRC, where there exist high leve
