Fatty liver disease and lifestyle in youngsters: diet, food intake frequency, exercise, sleep shortage and fashion.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Fatty liver is associated with alcohol habits and/or overweight/obesity. We challenged several lifestyle features associated with fatty liver and, particularly, with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Among them, sleep shortage as a result of nightlife habits and a preference for plus-size fashion were assessed. The latter consists of fashionable plus-sized clothing for actual individuals' size and reflects a frequent attitude of some social or age groups, conceivably indicating more global and widespread trend and behaviour. METHODS: We studied a group of 708 non-d

The common hepatic branch of the vagus is not required to mediate the glycemic and food intake suppressive effects of glucagon-like-peptide-1.

The incretin and food intake suppressive effects of intraperitoneally administered glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) involve activation of GLP-1 receptors (GLP-1R) expressed on vagal afferent fiber terminals. Central nervous system processing of GLP-1R-driven vagal afferents results in satiation signaling and enhanced insulin secretion from pancreatic-projecting vagal efferents. As the vast majority of endogenous GLP-1 is released from intestinal l-cells following ingestion, it stands to reason that paracrine GLP-1 signaling, activating adjacent GLP-1R expressed on vagal afferent fibers of gastr

A hypothalamic circuit that modulates feeding and parenting behaviours.

Across mammalian species, new mothers undergo behavioural changes to nurture their offspring and meet the caloric demands of milk production1-5. Although many neural circuits underlying feeding and parenting behaviours are well characterized6-9, it is unclear how these different circuits interact and adapt during lactation. Here we performed transcriptomic profiling of the arcuate nucleus (ARC) and the medial preoptic area (MPOA) of the mouse hypothalamus in response to lactation and hunger. Furthermore, we showed that heightened appetite in lactating mice was accompanied by increased activity

On Your Own: Older Adults' Food Choice and Dietary Habits.

The United Kingdom, in common with many countries, has an ageing demographic. Changes accompanying ageing can influence food choice and dietary habits. This study explored older adults' perceptions and practices related to dietary behaviour and the factors influencing their food choice in later life. Semi-structured focus-group discussions were conducted with 30 individuals (aged 63-90 years) in a UK city. An inductive thematic approach was adopted for data analysis, and 4 themes and 12 sub-themes emerged: age-related changes (lower appetite, food changes, declining physical function); food ac

The Relationship Between Binge Eating Behavior and Psychological Pain in Patients with Major Depressive Disorder.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a chronic mental disorder characterized by anhedonia, loss of desire, guilt, suicidal thoughts, and appetite changes. It is reported that individuals with MDD resort to binge eating to escape from negative feelings. In this study, we aimed to determine the relationship between binge eating behavior and the concept of psychological pain associated with emotions such as shame, guilt, and anger in individuals with MDD. We conducted the study in the Psychiatry Outpatient Clinics of Balcalı Hospital, Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine. The sample consisted of

A pilot study of a modification EAT-26 questionnaire for screening pathological eating behavior in competitive athletes.

This study deals with pathological forms of eating behavior and disorders of athletes with the aim to verify a newly created questionnaire method focused on their screening. First, a detailed analysis of one of the most frequently used methods, EAT-26, was carried out, which was subsequently reworked into a newly created questionnaire that should meet the criteria for application to a group of competitive athletes. This new questionnaire was then verified on a group of athletes in risky sports disciplines. It was distributed among athletes of aesthetic sports, specifically among aerobics (gymn

An open-label extension study of the safety and efficacy of risperidone in children and adolescents with autistic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term safety and efficacy of risperidone in treating irritability and related behaviors in children and adolescents with autistic disorders. METHODS: In this 6 month (26 week) open-label extension (OLE) study, patients (5-17 years of age, who completed the previous fixed-dose, 6 week, double-blind [DB] phase) were flexibly dosed with risperidone based on body weight. The maximum allowed dose was 1.25 mg/day for those weighing 20 to <45 kg, and 1.75 mg/day for those weighing ≥ 45 kg. The study primarily assessed risperidone's safety;

Social Stimuli Induce Activation of Oxytocin Neurons Within the Paraventricular Nucleus of the Hypothalamus to Promote Social Behavior in Male Mice.

Oxytocin (OT) is critical for the expression of social behavior across a wide array of species; however, the role of this system in the encoding of socially relevant information is not well understood. In the present study, we show that chemogenetic activation of OT neurons within the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVH) of male mice (OT-Ires-Cre) enhanced social investigation during a social choice test, while chemogenetic inhibition of these neurons abolished typical social preferences. These data suggest that activation of the OT system is necessary to direct behavior preferent

Differential regulation of female sexual behaviour by dopamine agonists in the medial preoptic area.

The medial preoptic area (mPOA) is a brain region critical in the control of male sexual behaviour, and the neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) plays an important role within it. However, both the roles of DA and the mPOA in female sexual behaviour are not fully understood, with few studies producing consistent data. The present study examined the function of DA within the mPOA on the full cascade of female sexual behaviour. Ovariectomized female rats were bilaterally cannulated into the mPOA and partially hormonally primed with estradiol benzoate (EB). Different doses of a nonselective DA receptor

A mouse model of fragile X syndrome exhibits heightened arousal and/or emotion following errors or reversal of contingencies.

This study was designed to further assess cognitive and affective functioning in a mouse model of Fragile X syndrome (FXS), the Fmr1(tm1Cgr) or Fmr1 "knockout" (KO) mouse. Male KO mice and wild-type littermate controls were tested on learning set and reversal learning tasks. The KO mice were not impaired in associative learning, transfer of learning, or reversal learning, based on measures of learning rate. Analyses of videotapes of the reversal learning task revealed that both groups of mice exhibited higher levels of activity and wall-climbing during the initial sessions of the task than dur

Salient cue reactivity and eating behaviors in ex-smokers, abstinent alcohol use disorder, and obesity.

INTRODUCTION: Neural cue reactivity is increasingly being investigated as a biomarker of treatment response and relapse prediction in addiction disorders. While aberrant brain responses to salient cues (e.g., drugs) have been widely reported in addiction, it is unclear whether these brain responses persist during longer-term abstinence and how they compare between substance use disorder and obesity and relate to potential differences in eating behaviors. As part of the Gut Hormones in ADDiction (GHADD) neuroimaging study, we investigated how salient cue reactivity to drugs or food, craving and

Amygdala subregion volumes and apportionment in preadolescents - Associations with age, sex, and body mass index.

The amygdala, a key limbic structure, is critical to emotional, social, and appetitive behaviors that develop throughout adolescence. Composed of a heterogeneous group of nuclei, questions remain about potential differences in the maturation of its subregions during development. In 3953 9- and 10-year-olds from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development℠ Study, the CIT168 Atlas was used to segment nine amygdala subregions. Linear mixed-effects models were used to examine the effects of age, sex, pubertal stage, and body mass index z-score (BMIz) on subregion volumes and their relative apportio…

Understanding depression and anxiety symptom interrelations in Indonesian OCD patients: A network approach.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients often experience co-occurring symptoms of depression and anxiety, underscoring the needs for targeted clinical interventions that address overlapping symptoms. Network analysis offers a method to examine the symptom interrelations and identify key symptoms for OCD patients interventions. This study collected self-report data on depression (PHQ-9) and anxiety (GAD-7) on OCD-diagnosed outpatients from a clinical psychology clinic in Jakarta, Indonesia (N = 232). The data were analyzed with several network analysis methods, including association networ

Atlas of GLP-1 expression in the mouse brain: Neuroanatomical basis for metabolic and psychiatric effects.

Recently, glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and its new blockbuster class of analogs have emerged as powerful therapeutics to combat obesity and diabetes, with growing evidence for potential efficacy in addiction, depression, and other psychiatric conditions. Although metabolic diseases are common in both women and men, certain pathological and clinical features exhibit sex-specific differences, as do psychiatric disorders. Importantly, as part of a broader network of peptides and hormones regulating ingestive and reward-related behaviors, GLP-1 appears to have stronger effects on appetite suppr

A Virtual In Vivo Dissection and Analysis of Socioaffective Symptoms Related to Cerebellum-Midbrain Reward Circuitry in Humans.

Emerging research in nonhuman animals implicates cerebellar projections to the ventral tegmental area (VTA) in appetitive behaviors, but these circuits have not been characterized in humans. Here, we mapped cerebello-VTA white matter connectivity in a cohort of men and women using probabilistic tractography on diffusion imaging data from the Human Connectome Project. We uncovered the topographical organization of these connections by separately tracking from parcels of cerebellar lobule VI, crus I/II, vermis, paravermis, and cerebrocerebellum. Results revealed that connections between the cere…

Effect of Diet before Bariatric Surgery on Ghrelin Level through DNA Methylation.

INTRODUCTION: The ghrelin system, which generates the appetite hormone, is harmed by obesity, a problem of worldwide public health. An efficient way to cure obesity is through bariatric surgery. This randomized controlled study's objective was to assess preoperative diet-related DNA methylation of Ghrelin (GHRL) levels in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. METHODS: The 50 patients who volunteered to participate in the trial were randomly divided into two groups. The study group followed the very low-calorie diet for 2 weeks. The control group did not follow any diet. The physiological par

Collateralizing ventral subiculum melanocortin 4 receptor circuits regulate energy balance and food motivation.

Hippocampal dysfunction is associated with major depressive disorder, a serious mental illness characterized by not only depressed mood but also appetite disturbance and dysregulated body weight. However, the underlying mechanisms by which hippocampal circuits regulate metabolic homeostasis remain incompletely understood. Here we show that collateralizing melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) circuits in the ventral subiculum (vSUB), one of the major output structures of the hippocampal formation, affect food motivation and energy balance. Viral-mediated cell type- and projection-specific input-outpu

A 14-year-old male patient with diagnosis of Prader-Willi syndrome in Ethiopia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome is a complex multisystem disorder due to the absent expression of paternally active genes in the Prader-Willi syndrome-critical region on chromosome 15 (15q11.2-q13). The main clinical features are hyperphagia (which frequently results in early-onset obesity), hypogonadism, developmental delays, typical behaviors (such as obsessive-compulsive tendencies, tantrums, perseveration, insistence on sameness, and rigidity), and distinctive facial features. In infants, the most prominent findings are hypotonia and feeding difficulties. CASE PRESENTATION: This paper h
