[A study of the process by which a school-age child adapted to body image changes following open-heart surgery].

This case report attempts to explore the adaptive process of body image changes in school-age children suffering from congenital ventricular septal defect (VSD) following open-heart surgery. After establishing trust relationship, we applied atraumatic care, projective communication techniques, interviews, behavioral observation, storytelling and play in our interaction with that child. We found the child experienced "body image disturbance" after open-heart surgery and underwent a four stage adaptive process as follows: (1) Impact (questioning, perception of punishment for wrongdoing, loss, an

Impaired GABA neuronal response to acute benzodiazepine administration in panic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Disturbances in the metabolism of the brain amino acid transmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) may contribute to the pathophysiology of human anxiety disorders. Animal studies indicate that deletions or reductions in the expression of the gene for the GABA synthetic enzyme, glutamate decarboxylase 65 (GAD(65)), reduce basal cortical GABA levels or stress-induced release of GABA in the cerebral cortex and increase fear behaviors. Complementing these findings, the authors recently observed lower than normal cortical GABA levels in patients with panic disorder. In the current study,

Longitudinal evaluation of apparent diffusion coefficient in children with neurofibromatosis type 1.

OBJECTIVES: Foci of T2-prolongation in both supra- and infratentorial brain in neurofibromatosis type-1 (NF1) patients have been called hamartoma-like NF1 lesions (HLL); however, their behavior is not consistent with this definition. Diffusion-weighted imaging has been used to study structure and cellularity of intracranial lesions. We applied this technique to characterize HLL as they change with time in pediatric patients. METHODS: We retrospectively studied 12 children (ages 2-20 years) with proven NF1. Forty lesions were studied longitudinally on multiple exams for a total of 166 measurem

Efficacy of intervention strategies in a brachial plexus global avulsion model in the rat.

The treatment of brachial plexus avulsion lesions invariably involves the use of neurotization procedures. Although some of these therapeutic strategies have been used for the past 20 years to restore selective function to the injured extremity, the individual efficacy of these nerve transfers has not been measured objectively, thereby rendering the prognostication of outcomes for these techniques a major problem. Using a true global avulsion model, the present study compares outcomes of the various neurotization procedures for the first time. The strength of this experimental model is that ea

Microvessel density, proliferating activity, p53 and bcl-2 expression in in situ ductal carcinoma of the breast.

BACKGROUND: Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of the breast represents a heterogeneous group of lesions that show important differences in biologic behavior. New vessel formation has been reported as a prognostic indicator in breast carcinoma, but little information is available about its significance in DCIS. This study was planned to examine angiogenesis in DCIS in relation to histologic subtype, proliferation activity, p53 and bcl-2 expression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Paraffin sections from 24 cases of DCIS (9 comedo and 15 non comedo type) were studied immunohistochemically using polyclonal

[Screening program for selection of hearing loss in newborn infants instituted by the European Community].

Early identification of hearing impairment in children poses a major problem for clinical research and development. In the last two years we determined the hearing sensitivity of 1202 newborns, small infants and children. 52.4% of the children exhibited risk factors for hearing impairment in their medical history. The majority of children was referred to our department by pediatricians (52%), who first suspected hearing impairment, 40% by parents, 3.5% by otolaryngologists, 3% by educators, and 1.5% by general practitioners. The following examinations were performed: transiently evoked otoacou

Effects of perfusate flow rate on measured blood volume, disse space, intracellular water space, and drug extraction in the perfused rat liver preparation: characterization by the multiple indicator dilution technique.

The effect of hepatic blood flow on the elimination of several highly cleared substrates was studied in the once-through perfused rat liver preparation. A constant and low input concentration of ethanol (2.0 mM), [14C]-phenacetin and [3H]-acetaminophen (0.36 and 0.14 microM, respectively), or meperidine (8.1 microM) was delivered once-through the rat liver preparation in five flow periods (greater than 35 min each); control flow periods at 12 ml/min were interrupted by flow changes to 8 or 16 ml/min. The steady-state hepatic availabilities (F or outflow survivals) at 12 ml/min were ethanol, 0.

Feasibility of intracranial surgery in the primate fetus. Model and surgical principles.

A research model for intracranial surgery in the primate fetus was developed and tested in 10 timed-pregnant rhesus monkeys. With general anesthesia and sterile surgical technique, a laparotomy followed by a lower uterine segment hysterotomy was performed at a site avoiding the placenta. The amnion was opened carefully by use of the operative microscope and the fetal head was exposed. A scalp incision was made over the frontal region and a small craniectomy and cortical incision were carried out. In three of the fetuses, ventricular shunts were also placed. A layered closure was performed and

Comparative electrophysiology of pyramidal and sparsely spiny stellate neurons of the neocortex.

Slices of sensorimotor and anterior cingulate cortex from guinea pigs were maintained in vitro and bathed in a normal physiological medium. Electrophysiological properties of neurons were assessed with intracellular recording techniques. Some neurons were identified morphologically by intracellular injection of the fluorescent dye Lucifer yellow CH. Three distinct neuronal classes of electrophysiological behavior were observed; these were termed regular spiking, bursting, and fast spiking. The physiological properties of neurons from sensorimotor and anterior cingulate areas did not differ sig

Iron-sulfur components of succinate dehydrogenase: stoichiometry and kinetic behavior in activated preparations.

Extensively or completely activated preparations of beef heart succinate dehydrogenase have been investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques at 6 to 97 K. Reductive titrations with dithionite and rapid kinetic studies were performed with various types of soluble and membrane-bound preparations of the enzyme. The following components were detected and their behavior analyzed: a free radical, presumably arising from the covalently bound flavin on reduction, two iron-sulfur centers of the ferredoxin type, the signals of which appear on reduction, and a highpotential iron-sulf

Current sensorless MPPT method with battery management for PV based single phase standalone system.

This paper introduces an improved current-sensorless maximum power point tracking (MPPT) approach, coupled with a battery charging unit, specifically designed for single-phase standalone photovoltaic (PV) power systems. An interleaved hybrid DC-DC boost converter with high voltage gain, previously developed by the authors, is used to boost the low and non-linear voltage output of the PV array to the usable DC grid voltage level. Since the energy yield of PV systems is highly sensitive to variations in solar irradiance, fast and accurate tracking of the maximum power point (MPP) is essential. U

Diagnostic Contribution of Multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Transplanted Kidneys: A Preliminary 3-Case Series.

Despite increasing interest in functional magnetic resonance imaging techniques, compartment-specific comparisons between donor kidneys and the same kidneys shortly after implant have remained limited. Therefore, in this preliminary case series, we aimed to explore early postoperative cortex- and medulla-specific multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging patterns in living-donor kidney transplant by directly comparing donor and recipient measurements within matched grafts. We assessed multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging parameters by comparing donor and early postoperative measurements

The impact of cannabidiol (CBD) in hyperglycemic zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a serious medical condition that impacts the lives of millions of people around the world. Complications of both micro- and macro-vascular nature occur later in life due to prolonged hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia increases inflammation throughout the CNS and, more locally, in retina leading to the downregulation of tight-junction proteins at the blood retinal barrier and visual decline in Type 2 DM (T2DM) patients. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid known to lower inflammation and reduce blood glucose levels. These characteristics suggest that CBD could be used to miti

Effect of H13 Surface Roughness on the Microstructure and Initial Corrosion Behavior of CrAlN Coatings.

This study investigates the influence of H13 steel substrate surface roughness on the corrosion behavior of CrAlN coatings in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. The interfacial structure of the coatings and the evolution of corrosion products were characterized using electrochemical techniques, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results indicate that reducing the substrate surface roughness from 0.235 μm to 0.167 μm resulted in a proportional decrease in the coating's critical load (Lc1), from 23.3 N to 17.3 N. Concurrently, the corrosion potential (Ecorr) s

Synergistic Effects of Iron in the Presence of Physiological Monovalent Cosolute on Myelin Basic Protein (MBP) Drive Modification in the Structure and Interfacial Behavior at the Air-Water Interface.

Myelin basic protein (MBP), an intrinsically disordered protein responsible for membrane compaction in the central nervous system, exhibits a strong sensitivity to environmental ionic conditions. To elucidate how metal ions and ionic environments influence the MBP structure and interfacial behavior, Langmuir films of MBP were developed on a pure water subphase and on subphases modified with FeCl3 (40 μM), KCl (100 mM), FeCl3 + KCl (40 μM + 100 mM), and at a reduced subphase pH (≈ 4.0) without added ions. Films at the air-water interface were examined using surface pressure-area (Π-A) isotherms

Impact of anatomical versus IDEAL anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction on postoperative functional recovery.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are common injuries that often require reconstruction to restore knee stability and function. Anatomical reconstruction (AR) seeks to replicate the native ACL footprint and orientation, whereas isometric, direct insertion, eccentrically located, anatomical, low tension (IDEAL) reconstruction applies principles intended to optimize graft positioning and tension behavior across knee motion. This retrospective study compared postoperative functional recovery between AR and IDEAL techniques in patients treated at our institution from January 2020 to December

Fracture behaviour and structural integrity of hemp fibre reinforced composites for low load-bearing aerospace applications.

This paper presents a research undertaking on the mechanical performance of hemp fibre reinforced epoxy composites with special attention to tensile, flexural and impact behavior. The hand lay-up technique was used to produce laminates that were composed of different proportions of hemp fibres within the range between 25 wt% and 45 wt% in an epoxy base. The findings showed that composites with 35 wt% hemp fibre had the most balanced mechanical performance. This structure was found to have tensile strength of 67.3 MPa, tensile modulus of 2.85 GPa and an elongation at break of 5.2%, which is the
