The Effect of Adequate Gestational Weight Gain among Adolescents Relative to Adults of Equivalent Body Mass Index and the Risk of Preterm Birth, Cesarean Delivery, and Low Birth Weight.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether similar odds of cesarean delivery (C/S), preterm birth (PTB), and low birth weight (LBW) are observed among adolescents compared with body mass index (BMI)-equivalent adults in cases of adequate gestational weight gain. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective, population-based, cohort study using the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's birth data files from the United States for 2012. We selected from the cohort all singleton, cephalic pregnancies and stratified them according to maternal age, prepregnancy BMI, and gestational weight gain following t

The body weight-walking distance product as a superior parameter in determining the VO2 on-kinetics in coronary artery disease.

The 6-minute walk test is frequently used to assess the functional capacity of the cardiac disease population. Nevertheless, anthropometric differences can confound or misestimate performance, which highlights the need for new parameters. This study aimed to investigate the potential of the body weight-walking distance product (D·W) compared to the 6-minute walk test distance to predict exercise capacity measured by oxygen uptake (VO2) on-kinetics in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary-care reference institution. Forty-six participants wi…

A Pilot Study of the Role of Salivary Biomarkers in the Diagnosis of PCOS in Adolescents Across Different Body Weight Categories.

Background/Objectives: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder affecting reproductive, metabolic, and inflammatory … suggesting that low-grade inflammation and hormonal disturbances in PCOS are not limited to excess body weight. Salivary testosterone was strongly associated with hyperandrogenism, while uric acid correlated with the cortisol/DHEA-S ratio, indicating possible links to metabolic stress. Conclusions: In conclusion, salivary assays may offer a valuable, non-inv …

Age and sex differences in the relationship of body weight changes with colon cancer risks: A nationwide cohort study.

Colon cancer is a significant health concern, and obesity is a well-established risk factor. However, previous studies have mainly focused on assessing body weight as a risk factor for colon cancer at a specific time point. This nationwide cohort study investigated the association between body weight changes, which can fluctuate throughout an individual's lifespan, and the incidence of colon cancer using the South Korean population database provided by the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). Participants who underwent biennial health screenings between 2004 and 2006, and had follow-up he…

Neurexin-3 in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus regulates body weight and glucose homeostasis independently of food intake.

Neurexin-3 (Nrxn3) has been genetically associated with obesity, but the underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the role of Nrxn3 in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) in regulating energy balance and glucose homeostasis. We found that Nrxn3 expression in the PVN was upregulated in response to metabolic stressors, including cold exposure and fasting. Using Cre-loxP technology, we selectively ablated Nrxn3 in CaMKIIα-expressing neurons of the PVN in male mice. This genetic manipulation resulted in marked weight gain attributable

The effect of active vitamin D supplementation on body weight and composition: A meta-analysis of individual participant data.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Obesity is associated with vitamin D (VitD) deficiency. However, previous studies showed mixed effects of VitD (25-hydroxyVitD/calcidiol) supplementation on body weight. The biological actions of VitD require the hydroxylation of inactive VitD into active VitD (1.25-dihydroxyVitD/calcitriol). This step is highly regulated; therefore, supplementing with inactive VitD might not be sufficient to overcome the potential adverse health effects of VitD deficiency. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review and individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis of d…

Strengths-Based Factors Related to Post-Traumatic Stress Problems in Black Youth with High Body Weights.

OBJECTIVE: Black youth with high body weights [BYHW; Body Mass Index (BMI)≥95th percentile] endure unique stressors (e.g., exposure to discrimination due to race and size) that may contribute to psychopathology. Factors that decrease mental health problems associated with these stressors have been underexamined in BYHW. The current study assessed how multisystemic resilience, weight-related quality of life (QOL), and discrimination were associated with post-traumatic stress problems in BYHW from the perspective of youth and their caregivers. METHODS: A total of 93 BYHW and one of their primar…

Reduction of body weight by increased loading is associated with activation of norepinephrine neurones in the medial nucleus of the solitary tract.

We previously provided evidence supporting the existence of a novel leptin-independent body weight homeostat ("the gravitostat") that senses body weight and then initiates a homeostatic feed-back regulation of body weight. We, herein, hypothesize that this feed-back regulation involves a CNS mechanism. To identify populations of neurones of importance for the putative feed-back signal induced by increased loading, high-fat diet-fed rats or mice were implanted intraperitoneally or subcutaneously with capsules weighing ∼15% (Load) or ∼2.5% (Control) of body weight. At 3-5 days after implantation…

The synthesis and evaluation of thiolated alginate as the barrier to block nutrient absorption on small intestine for body-weight control.

Obesity is the most common health concern all over the world. However, till now, there is no promising way to manage obesity or body-weight … within 24 h. The animal study shows that the TA by daily oral administration can effectively reduce body weight and fat deposition. The biosafety is evaluated in vitro at the cellular level, based on ISO-10993, and further checked by animal study. We do believe that the TA could have a greater potential to be developed into a safe health supplement to manage …

Loss of function of renal Glut2 reverses hyperglycaemia and normalises body weight in mouse models of diabetes and obesity.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Renal GLUT2 is increased in diabetes, thereby enhancing glucose reabsorption and worsening hyperglycaemia. Here, we determined whether loss of Glut2 (also known as Slc2a2) specifically in the kidneys would reverse hyperglycaemia and normalise body weight in mouse models of diabetes and obesity. METHODS: We used the tamoxifen-inducible CreERT2-Lox system in mice to knockout Glut2 specifically in the kidneys (Ks-Glut2 KO) to establish the contribution of renal GLUT2 to systemic glucose homeostasis in health and in insulin-dependent as well as non-insulin-dependent diabetes. We …
