Modulation of GABA release by second messenger substances and NO in mouse brain stem slices under normal and ischemic conditions.

GABA is the inhibitory neurotransmitter in most brain stem nuclei. The properties of release of preloaded [(3)H]GABA were now investigated with slices from the mouse brain stem under normal and ischemic (oxygen and glucose deprivation) conditions, using a superfusion system. The ischemic GABA release increased about fourfold in comparison with normal conditions. The tyrosine kinase inhibitor genistein had no effect on GABA release, while the phospholipase inhibitor quinacrine reduced both the basal and K(+)-evoked release in normoxia and ischemia. The activator of protein kinase C (PKC) 4beta-…

Dose- and duration-dependent alterations by tellurium on lipid levels: differential effects in cerebrum, cerebellum, and brain stem of mice.

The effect of various doses of sodium tellurite (1/50 LD50=0.4 mg/kg, 1/25 LD50=0.8 mg/kg, and 1/10 LD50=2.0 mg/kg body weight orally) on the lipid levels (cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids, esterified fatty acids, gangliosides, and total lipids) in the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem of male albino mice was studied after 7 and 15 d of treatment. Sodium tellurite (2.0 mg/kg body weight) for 7 d has an apparent effect on the depletion of cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids, esterified fatty acids, and total lipids. The cholesterol content was decreased significantly in the cer

[Effect of the intermittent hypoxic training on the functioning of peptidergic neurons of the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus and brain stem neurons in rats].

Internittent hypoxic training (IHT) increased the quantity and secretory activity of peptidergic neurons of the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus (PHN) and activated neurons of the dorsal motor nucleus of n.vagus. These structures seem to take part in realisation of the IHT activating effect on condition of the pancreatic delta-cells. The effect involves insulin-stimulating and insuloprotective effects realised via hypothalamic and neuro-conducting ways of regulation of the endocrine pancreas with a direct participation of hypothalamic neuropeptides.

[The use of brain stem auditory evoked potentials and electromyography in the monitoring of cranial nerves during skull base surgery].

Cranial nerves and the brainstem are at risk of being injured during skull base operations. The result might be the patient's death or severe neurological deficits. Brainstem auditory evoked potential is an accepted method of intraoperative auditory nerve or brainstem monitoring. Other cranial nerves are monitored using electromyography and evoked muscle activity recorded from appropriated muscle groups.

Mossy fiber projections from the brain stem to the nodulus in the cat. An experimental study comparing the nodulus, the uvula and the flocculus.

Mossy fiber projections from the brainstem to the nodulus were studied by means of the retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in the cat. The findings indicate exclusive secondary vestibular projections to the nodulus (96.5% of the total number of labeled cells in cat 1). Major sources of such projections include the caudal half of the medial and inferior vestibular nuclei, and the dorsal half of the superior vestibular nucleus. Groups-x and -z of the vestibular nuclei give rise to minor projections. The projections from groups-f and -y, and the interstitial nucleus of the eighth

Excitation of lumbar motoneurons by the medial longitudinal fasciculus in the in vitro brain stem spinal cord preparation of the neonatal rat.

1. The excitation of lumbar motoneurons by reticulospinal axons traveling in the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) was investigated in the newborn rat using intracellular recordings from lumbar motoneurons in an in vitro preparation of the brain stem and spinal cord. The tracer DiI (1,1'-dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine) was introduced into the MLF of 6-day-old littermate rats that had been fixed with paraformaldehyde to evaluate the anatomic extent of this developing pathway. 2. Fibers labeled from the MLF by DiI were present in the cervical ventral and lateral white matte…

[Superior petrosal sinus dural arteriovenous malformation with varix indenting brain stem--report of a case and review of the literature].

A rare case of the dural AVM mainly around the left petrosal sinus was reported. A 64 years old man was admitted just after the sudden onset of severe headache and nausea. The CT scan revealed subarachnoid hemorrhage in the left ambient cisterns. A small hematoma was also found in the left cerebellar peduncle. External carotid angiogram showed a dural AVM which nidus was located adjacent to the left superior petrosal sinus. Its feeding arteries were as follows; the middle meningeal artery, the artery of foramen rotundum, the accessory meningeal artery, the dural branch of occipital artery and

Changes in blood pressure during isometric contractions to fatigue in the cat after brain stem lesions: effects of clonidine.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The aim was to determine whether areas in the periaqueductal grey matter, medial dorsal raphe, or ventrolateral medulla might be involved with the integration of blood pressure and heart rate during isometric exercise. DESIGN: Cats were anaesthetised with alpha chloralose (75 mg.kg-1) and catheters inserted into the right jugular vein and carotid artery. Isometric contractions were generated using a microprocessor controlled stimulator and sleeve electrode around the tibial nerve. Bilateral lesions were made in the dorsal periaqueductal grey matter (P1.0, LR2.0, HD + 1.5 mm)

[The DOPA and dopamine content in the hypothalamus and brain stem of rats with an experimental stomach ulcer against a background of a course of acupuncture].

In experiments on rats with experimental ulcer of the stomach (EUS) using spectrofluorometric method the increase of DOPA and dopamine (DA) in brain stem, has been revealed as well as DOPA in hypothalamus. Change of the level of DOPA takes place at an early stage of ulcer formation. Acupuncture (AP) inserts essential corrections into the distribution of catecholamines under study. So, the content of DOPA and DA in hypothalamus and particularly in the brain stem in rats with EUS against the background of AP sharply increases. It has been supposed that AP realizes its therapeutic influence durin…

'Iatrogenic' brain stem infarction. A complication of x-ray examination of the cervical spine and following posterior tamponation of the nose.

Two patients sustained an ischemic brain stem infarction during medical examination and treatment. The first patient lost consciousness and the spontaneous respiration ceased during X-ray examination of the cervical spine when the neck was hyperextended. After some minutes he regained conciousness but was found to be tetraplegic, and the patient deceased 4 months later. The angiogram revealed thrombosis of the basilar artery. The other patient had profuse nosebleed and was treated with posterior tamponation during which she sat for about 10 min with the neck hyperextended. Some hours after thi…

Human-Brain-Derived Ischemia-Induced Stem Cell Transplantation Is Associated with a Greater Neurological Functional Improvement Compared with Human-Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplantation in Mice After Stroke.

The transplantation of injury/ischemia-induced stem cells (iSCs) extracted from post-stroke human brains can improve the neurological functions of mice after stroke. However, the usefulness of iSCs as an alternative stem cell source remains unclear. The current study aimed to assess the efficacy of iSC and mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transplantation. In this experiment, equal numbers of human brain-derived iSCs (h-iSCs) (5.0 × 104 cells/μL) and human bone marrow-derived MSCs (h-MSCs) (5.0 × 104 cells/μL) were intracranially transplanted into post-stroke mouse brains after middle cerebral arter

Combined transplantation of neural stem cells and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells promotes neuronal cell survival to alleviate brain damage after cardiac arrest via microRNA-133b incorporated in extracellular vesicles.

Neural stem cell (NSC) transplantation has prevailed as a promising protective strategy for cardiac arrest (CA)-induced brain damage. Surprisingly, the poor survival of neuronal cells in severe hypoxic condition restricts the utilization of this cell-based therapy. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) transfer microRNAs (miRNAs) between cells are validated as the mode for the release of several therapeutic molecules. The current study reports that the bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) interact with NSCs via EVs thereby affecting the survival of neuronal cells. Hypoxic injury models of neurona

Intravenous Administration of Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell, but not Adipose Tissue-Derived Stem Cell, Ameliorated the Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Brain Injury by Changing Cerebral Inflammatory State in Rat.

Perinatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury occurs in 1 in 1,000 live births and remains the main cause of neurological disability and death in term infants. Cytotherapy has recently emerged as a novel treatment for tissue injury. In particular, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are thought to have therapeutic potential, but little is known about the differences according to their origin. In the current study, we investigated the therapeutic effects and safety of intravenous injection of allogeneic bone marrow-derived MSCs (BM-MSCs) and adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) in a rat model of HI brai
