Modeling ebola virus disease transmissions with reservoir in a complex virus life ecology.

We propose a new deterministic mathematical model for the transmission dynamics of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in a complex Ebola virus life ecology. Our model captures as much as possible the features and patterns of the disease evolution as a three cycle transmission process in the two ways below. Firstly it involves the synergy between the epizootic phase (during which the disease circulates periodically amongst non-human primates populations and decimates them), the enzootic phase (during which the disease always remains in fruit bats population) and the epidemic phase (during which the EVD

Characterization of uncultivable bat influenza virus using a replicative synthetic virus.

Bats harbor many viruses, which are periodically transmitted to humans resulting in outbreaks of disease (e.g., Ebola, SARS-CoV). Recently, influenza virus-like sequences were identified in bats; however, the viruses could not be cultured. This discovery aroused great interest in understanding the evolutionary history and pandemic potential of bat-influenza. Using synthetic genomics, we were unable to rescue the wild type bat virus, but could rescue a modified bat-influenza virus that had the HA and NA coding regions replaced with those of A/PR/8/1934 (H1N1). This modified bat-influenza virus

Assessment of risk for exposure to bats in sleeping quarters before and during remediation - Kentucky, 2012.

Bats are a reservoir for rabies viruses and have been identified as the most common source of human rabies infections acquired in the United States. The last human rabies fatality from a bat exposure reported in a Kentucky resident occurred in 1996. In July 2012, the Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH) was advised of multiple potential bat exposures following efforts to eliminate a bat colony from a volunteer facility. Bats had routinely been sighted in a brick building in eastern Kentucky that had been used as sleeping quarters by an organization that, since 1999, had hosted thousand

Cat infected by a variant of bat rabies virus in a 29-year disease-free urban area of southern Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: After 29 years, rabies was detected in a cat in Curitiba, southern Brazil. METHODS: The fluorescent antibody test (FAT) and mouse inoculation test (MIT) were performed on central nervous system (CNS) samples. RESULTS: Direct immunofluorescence was negative, but the biological test was positive and rabies virus was characterized as variant 4 (from Tadarida brasiliensis). CONCLUSIONS: Reappearance of rabies in domestic animals warns of sylvatic-aerial risk of infection and the necessity of monitoring bats in historically rabies-free areas.

Bat rabies, public health and European bat conservation.

Most records of European bat lyssaviruses (EBLVs) are confined to three species - the serotine bat for EBLV1 (900 records) and Daubenton's bat and the pond bat for EBLV2 (25 records). High levels of seroprevalence, which may vary from year to year, are also recorded. All bat vectors of EBLVs are synanthropic, some exclusively so. Despite this, there have been only five cases of human rabies resulting from EBLV infection in the 590 million people of greater Europe during the last 35 years. These have triggered major programmes of surveillance in many European countries. The emphasis on active v

Desmodus rotundus and Artibeus spp. bats might present distinct rabies virus lineages.

In Brazil, bats have been assigned an increasing importance in public health as they are important rabies reservoirs. Phylogenetic studies have shown that rabies virus (RABV) strains from frugivorous bats Artibeus spp. are closely associated to those from the vampire bat Desmodus rotundus, but little is known about the molecular diversity of RABV in Artibeus spp. The N and G genes of RABV isolated from Artibeus spp. and cattle infected by D. rotundus were sequenced, and phylogenetic trees were constructed. The N gene nucleotides tree showed three clusters: one for D. rotundus and two for Artib

Insulin and glucose sensitivity, insulin secretion and beta-cell distribution in endocrine pancreas of the fruit bat Artibeus lituratus.

The fruit bat Artibeus lituratus absorbs large amounts of glucose in short periods of time and maintains normoglycemia even after a prolonged starvation period. Based on these data, we aimed to investigate various aspects related with glucose homeostasis analyzing: blood glucose and insulin levels, intraperitoneal glucose and insulin tolerance tests (ipGTT and ipITT), glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (2.8, 5.6 or 8.3 mmol/L glucose) in pancreas fragments, cellular distribution of beta cells, and the amount of pAkt/Akt in the pectoral muscle and liver. Blood glucose levels were higher in fe

The control of rabies in Eurasia: overview, history and background.

After a short overview of the present and past epidemiological situation regarding animal and human rabies in Eurasia, the general characteristics of the disease are described in each vector. Three main rabies cycles are presently established in Eurasia: in dogs, wild carnivores and insectivorous bats. Because of the strong barrier that exists between species-adapted rabies viruses and various potential hosts, these cycles are quite independent. They are perceived in many countries in Eurasia not to have a significant impact on animal health or the rural economy in general; the loss of dogs (o

A random grid based molecular epidemiological study on EBLV isolates from Germany.

Germany has reported one of the highest levels of EBLV cases in bats in Europe. So far, all isolates originating from Germany have been identified as EBLV-1, using monoclonal antibodies, and a preliminary epidemiological study has indicated that there is a distinct geographical distribution of EBLV-1 in Germany. To further investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of EBLV-1 variants in Germany and their impact on molecular epidemiology, isolates were selected using a random grid sampling procedure based on GIS. Agrid layer 30 km long over the entire area of Germany was applied to 120 g

Experimental infection of foxes with European bat lyssaviruses type-1 and -2.

Experimental studies have been undertaken to assess the susceptibility of silver foxes to bat variants of rabies virus, namely European Bat Lyssaviruses (EBLVs). Both EBLV-1 and EBLV-2 have been isolated in European bats since 1954, in Eptesicus serotinus and Myotis species, respectively. Since 2000, the number of reported cases has increased largely due to the improvement of the surveillance of bat rabies virus throughout Europe. Although over >800 EBLVs cases have been reported in bats in Europe, EBLV-1 and -2 viruses are rarely reported to infect humans and terrestrial animals. The study pr

New rabies virus variant in Mexican immigrant.

A novel rabies virus was identified after death in a man who had immigrated from Oaxaca, Mexico, to California, USA. Despite the patient's history of exposure to domestic and wild carnivores, molecular and phylogenetic characterizations suggested that the virus originated from insectivorous bats. Enhanced surveillance is needed to elucidate likely reservoirs.

Temporal dynamics of European bat Lyssavirus type 1 and survival of Myotis myotis bats in natural colonies.

Many emerging RNA viruses of public health concern have recently been detected in bats. However, the dynamics of these viruses in natural bat colonies is presently unknown. Consequently, prediction of the spread of these viruses and the establishment of appropriate control measures are hindered by a lack of information. To this aim, we collected epidemiological, virological and ecological data during a twelve-year longitudinal study in two colonies of insectivorous bats (Myotis myotis) located in Spain and infected by the most common bat lyssavirus found in Europe, the European bat lyssavirus

[Human rabies prophylaxis in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil, 2002].

Timely application of adequate treatment, speedy and thorough observation of animals, and streamlined information transfer provide quality rabies epidemiological surveillance in cases of attacks by animals. This study aims to evaluate rabies surveillance and the use of a computerized system in the surveillance process. A total of 4,168 attacks by animals were analyzed. The injuries were considered severe in 65.9% of cases. Dogs accounted for 87.6% of the severe cases, cats 10.5%, and bats 0.6%. Two treatment recording sites were analyzed. According to the rabies treatment record sheet, 41.9% o

Evidence of increased endometrial vascular permeability at the time of implantation in the short-nosed fruit bat, Cyanopterus sphinx.

Early embryonic development and implantation were studied in tropical short-nosed fruit bat Cyanopterus sphinx. We report preimplantation development and embryo implantation. Different stages of cleavage were observed in embryo by direct microscopic examination of fresh embryos after retrieving them either from the oviduct or the uterus at different days, up to the day of implantation. Generally, the embryos enter the uterus at the 8-cell stage. Embryonic development continued without any delay and blastocyst were formed showing attachment to the uterine epithelium at the mesometrial side of t

Acute pulmonary histoplasmosis from Ghana.

A male patient developed acute pulmonary histoplasmosis 2 weeks after bathing in the water falls of Wli, Ghana. Exposure to Histoplasma capsulatum was probably mediated through inhalation of an aerosol of water and guano from the large colony of fruit bats of the falls. More cases of acute pulmonary histoplasmosis can be expected.

Ultrastructural aspects of the follicular cells of the pars tuberalis in bats related to the seasonal cycle.

The topography and structure of the follicular cells and the follicular cavity of the hypophyseal pars tuberalis (PT) were studied in adult hibernating bats (Pipistrellus pipistrellus and Rhinolophus ferrumequinum) of both sexes, during the annual seasonal cycle and the reproductive cycle. The follicular cells were found to be organized around a central cavity. They showed a polyhedral shape and apical microvilli protruding into central cavities. During hibernation, the follicular cells showed active cytoplasmic organelles, clusters of glycogen particles, and lipid droplets. In the supranuclea

Mosquito blood feeding patterns as a factor in the epidemiology of Japanese encephalitis in southern India.

Determinations were made of the source of 16,330 bloodmeals from 10 species of Culex mosquitoes, including recognized vectors of Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus, in two epidemiologically distinct areas in southern India. In Madurai, where cases occurred sporadically and pigs were reared only in some villages, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus, Cx. pseudovishnui, and Cx. vishnui had fed predominantly on cattle (89.2-91%), but less frequently on humans (2.1-6.2%) and on pigs and ardeid birds (0-0.1%). In Nallur, which was endemic for JE and had a large pig population, 4.4-5.4% of the feedings were on these

Connectional basis for frequency representation in the nuclei of the lateral lemniscus of the bat Eptesicus fuscus.

To study the role of the lateral lemniscus as a link in the ascending auditory pathway, injections of neuronal tracers were placed in the anteroventral cochlear nucleus (AVCN) and in the inferior colliculus of the bat Eptesicus fuscus. To correlate the anatomical results with tonotopic organization, the characteristic frequency of cells at each injection site was determined electrophysiologically. Pathways from AVCN diverge to 3 major targets in the lateral lemniscus, the intermediate nucleus and 2 divisions of the ventral nucleus (VNLL). Projections from these 3 nuclei then converge at the in
