Climate-dependent nonlinear relationships between PM2.5 and ecosystem productivity across China's urban agglomerations.

Air pollution can alter ecosystem productivity by modifying atmospheric radiation and environmental conditions, yet its large-scale ecological impacts remain uncertain. In particular, associations between fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and vegetation productivity may vary across climatic environments and levels of urbanization, and are often interpreted as direct aerosol effects without adequate separation from co-varying pathways. Here we examine statistical associations between PM2.5 concentrations and gross primary productivity (GPP) across five major urban agglomerations in China spanning

Tree Cover and Temperature Shape the Distribution of Epiphytic Pleurozia in Asia: Forest Havens in a Warming Climate.

Pleurozia (Pleuroziaceae, Marchantiophyta) is an evolutionarily and ecologically significant genus of epiphytic liverworts, primarily distributed in tropical and subtropical montane forests. However, the effects of climate change on its distribution remain poorly understood. In this study, we employed the MaxEnt model to predict the potential distribution patterns of Pleurozia in Asia at both the genus and species levels under current and future climate scenarios (SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5 for 2050 and 2070). The results revealed that evergreen broadleaf forest cover, temperature variability (annu

Dengue virus at the landscape scale in Cambodia: Linking climate and land use dynamics with Dengue ecology in Southeast Asia.

Dengue remains a major public health challenge in Cambodia, where transmission dynamics are driven by interactions among human infections, Aedes vector populations, land use and climatic variability. Hence, longitudinal evidence linking laboratory-confirmed dengue infections with entomological and environmental indicators remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the dengue incidence and Aedes vector populations in relation to climate and land use dynamics. Adult Aedes mosquitoes have been collected across six major land-use types using BG-Sentinel traps every 2 months during 4 years. I

The fertility of a sub-population of stallions is negatively affected by ambient climatic conditions, mediated through DNA damage.

Exposure to systemic heat stress in male mammals adversely affects sperm production, fertility, and DNA integrity. To date, few studies have investigated this phenomenon in horses, particularly in industry-relevant environments. Therefore, this study examined the relationship between ambient climatic conditions and fertility within a population of commercially fertile stallions. Post-coital semen samples (n = 804) were collected weekly from 46 Thoroughbred stallions during two successive breeding seasons (NSW, Australia; 22 weeks total). Semen samples were processed via single-layer colloidal

Teaching Autistic Adolescents to Identify Fear and Anger: A Preliminary Study.

Climate change poses significant threats to European agricultural production, with increasing frequency and severity of adverse weather events impacting crop yields. Agroforestry, the integration of woody elements into agricultural systems, is recognized as a vital agroecological approach for both climate change mitigation and adaptation, yet key mechanistic and long-term performance questions remain unresolved. This study utilized the mechanistic Hi-sAFe model to simulate 100 years (2001-2100) of silvoarable agroforestry performance at Wakelyns farm in southeastern England, focusing on winter

Reviewing estimates of the basic reproduction number for dengue, Zika and chikungunya across global climate zones.

BACKGROUND: Globally, dengue, Zika virus, and chikungunya are important viral mosquito-borne diseases that infect millions of people annually. Their geographic range includes not only tropical areas but also sub-tropical and temperate zones such as Japan and Italy. The relative severity of these arboviral disease outbreaks can vary depending on the setting. In this study we explore variation in the epidemiologic potential of outbreaks amongst these climatic zones and arboviruses in order to elucidate potential reasons behind such differences. METHODOLOGY: We reviewed the peer-reviewed literat

Impact of rotavirus and hepatitis A virus by worldwide climatic changes during the period between 2000 and 2013.

Enteric viruses are present in the environment as a result of the discharge of poorly or untreated wastewater. The spread of enteric viruses in the environment depend to human activities like stools of infected individuals ejected in the external environment can be transmitted by water sources and back to susceptible individuals for other cycles of illness. Among the enteric viruses Rotaviruses (RV) and Hepatitis A viruses (HAV) is the most detected in wastewater causing gastroenteritis and acute hepatitis. Therefore, it is of interest to climate change, mainly temperature and carbon Dioxide (

Quantifying milk production losses due to heat stress in Indian Sahiwal cattle.

Genetic selection of animals for climatic resilience is essential to improve the ability of cows to maintain higher productivity even under extreme environmental conditions. One of the most direct approaches to assess the impact of heat stress on livestock is by analysing decline in productivity, particularly milk yield. Modelling lactation curves using non- linear functions allows for an accurate estimation of milk loss attributed to environmental stressors. Various indices have been developed to quantify climatic stress, one of which is the Temperature Humidity Index (THI), widely used to in

Climate variability, satellite-derived physical environmental data and human leptospirosis: A retrospective ecological study in China.

BACKGROUND: In the past three decades, the incidence rate of notified leptospirosis cases in China have steeply declined and are now circumscribed to discrete areas in the country. Previous research showed that climate and environmental variation may play an important role in leptospirosis transmission. However, quantitative associations between climate, environmental factors and leptospirosis in the high-risk areas in China, is still poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the temporal effects of climate and remotely-sensed physical environmental factors on human leptospirosis in the high-

Hydroclimatic variability is associated with gastrointestinal parasite dynamics in black-horned capuchins (Sapajus nigritus cucullatus) in the Atlantic Forest of Argentina.

Understanding the environmental drivers of parasite dynamics in wildlife is critical for predicting disease risk under changing climatic conditions. We investigated the relationship between climatic variables and patterns of gastrointestinal parasitism in wild black-horned capuchin monkeys (Sapajus nigritus cucullatus) inhabiting the Atlantic Forest (Misiones, Argentina). A total of 131 fecal samples were collected from two study sites (COR: 25°51'S, 53°57'W; YL: 25°34'S, 54°4'W) between May 2019 and November 2021 and analyzed using flotation and sedimentation techniques. From invasion to infection: The worldwide expansion and arboviral transmission potential of Aedes albopictus.

The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, has emerged as a globally invasive vector of major public health concern. This review synthesises current evidence on its invasion biology, vector competence, ecological plasticity, and expanding epidemiological significance, with particular emphasis on arboviral transmission dynamics. A comprehensive review of experimental, field-based, and modelling studies was conducted to identify determinants of vector competence and transmission risk, including Wolbachia-mediated viral interference, temperature-driven changes in extrinsic incubation period, ver

The influence of athletic identity, coach-athlete relationship quality, and peer climate on emotional resilience in injury-prone sports.

INTRODUCTION: Athletes competing in injury-prone sports are routinely exposed to physical risk and psychological strain, making psychological adaptation a critical yet underexplored issue in sport psychology. Drawing on identity-based perspectives, conservation of resources theory, and self-determination theory, this study examined whether athletic identity influences psychological adaptation through emotional resilience and whether coach-athlete relationship quality and peer climate strengthen this process. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 482 athletes participating in i

Interplay of Immunity, Climate, and Viral Evolution Explains Semiannual SARS-CoV-2 Dynamics with Implications for Control.

In the three years since Omicron emergence, SARS-CoV-2 dynamics have exhibited persistent twice-yearly waves in the United States, peaking in late summer and winter, with heterogeneity in timing and intensity across states. This semiannual pattern sharply contrasts with typical annual respiratory pathogen dynamics in the US, yet their underlying mechanisms and whether this pattern will persist remain poorly understood. Here, we tested several hypothesized mechanisms and found that a combination of waning immunity, climatic factors of relative humidity and temperature, variant activity, and vac

A deep learning approach to county-level soybean yield forecasting using large-scale environmental data.

INTRODUCTION: Agricultural systems continue to be disrupted by climate change, making crop yield forecasting a critical component towards informed agricultural planning. However, current yield forecasting approaches often lack in scale and are hard to interpret agronomically within real world scenarios. To fill the gap, this study developed an interpretable soybean yield forecasting framework using quantifiable county-level climate and soil attributes at scale for early, accurate yield predictions months ahead of harvest. METHODS: Here, 388 climate, soil, and elevation attributes were collect

Unearthing Forest History: Integrating Soil Charcoal Macrofossils and Pollen Reveals Delayed Forest Responses to Holocene Climatic Transitions in Boreal-Temperate Ecotone.

Studying historical dynamics and compositional changes of ecotones is essential for improving predictions of their responses to anthropogenic global change. However, the small size and geographic isolation of marginal ecotonal stands require retrospective analyses at the local scale. Here, we combine soil macrofossil charcoal analysis (SMCA), a lake-sediment pollen record, and contemporary forest inventories to reconstruct past dynamics and assess contemporary trajectories of forest stands located at the northern boundary of the boreal-temperate ecotone (BTE) in the Rimouski hinterland (Lower

Long-term prediction of climate change impacts on indoor particle pollution - case study of a residential building in Germany.

Extreme weather phenomena are increasing in nature, which affects indoor air quality and especially particle concentrations in several ways: (1) changes in ambient pollutant concentrations, (2) indoor particle formation from gas-phase reactions, (3) building characteristics, (4) particle dynamic processes, and (5) residential behavior. However, there are only a few studies that have examined future indoor particle concentrations in relation to climate change, even though indoor spaces are intended to protect people from local climate influences and health risks posed by pollutants. Consequentl

Advancing Research and Practice in People, Health, and Place in Brazil: Using Community-Based System Dynamics to Identify Physical Activity Research Priorities.

BACKGROUND: Brazil has made significant strides in promoting physical activity through research, policy, and large-scale programs. However, physical inactivity persists as a major risk factor for noncommunicable diseases, disproportionately affecting women, older adults, and low-income populations. Addressing this issue requires evidence-based approaches rooted in social justice, particularly within Brazil's complex social, economic, and spatial inequalities. METHODS: This study applied community-based system dynamics to engage health, urban planning, and social equity researchers to identify

Can Oxygen Isotopes in Tree Rings Be Used to Detect Stomatal Responses to Global Change?

Stomatal conductance (gs) regulates CO2 and water fluxes of plants. Although experiments have shown that gs decreases with elevated CO2, it is unclear how gs is responding in situ to long-term exposures to rising CO2 and a changing climate. Tree ring isotope analysis provides a unique method to assess tree ecophysiological responses to long-term exposures of slowly changing environmental conditions. In particular, it has been suggested that changes in gs can potentially be inferred from tree ring stable oxygen isotope ratios (δ18Otrc). Several studies have indeed used δ18Otrc trends to conclud
