Molecular Chaperone Networks in Plants: Maintaining Proteostasis and Enhancing Stress Resilience for Crop Improvement.

Molecular chaperones play a central role in the plant proteostasis machinery by aiding the folding of nascent proteins, preventing aggregation, and repairing or degrading damaged proteins. These functions are especially essential during abiotic and biotic stress, which can destabilise cellular proteins and disrupt metabolic homoeostasis. This review summarises the current progress regarding the major heat shock protein (Hsp) families, Hsp100, Hsp90, Hsp70, Hsp60, and small heat shock proteins (sHSPs) and their key co-chaperones, DnaJ/Hsp40 and nucleotide exchange factors (NEFs), in relation to

Wheat leaf dark respiration acclimates more strongly at night than in the day when responding to nocturnal warming.

Rising night temperatures pose a significant threat to wheat productivity, yet the physiological basis of wheat adaptation to nocturnal warming remains poorly understood. We evaluated leaf photosynthetic and respiratory traits in response to warm nights under temperature-controlled environments in 10 Australian wheat cultivars released between 1901 and 2012. When exposed to warmer nights, rates of leaf net CO2 assimilation measured at 25 °C (Anet25) remained stable across cultivar release date despite declines in photosynthetic capacity (Vcmax and J1500) in newer cultivars. In most cultivars l

A comparative life cycle assessment of the environmental impact of preoperative skin preparation, single-use applicators versus bulk antiseptic with reusable instruments.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative skin preparation (PSP) is a critical step of surgery to reduce bacteria on the skin that can cause infections. It is commonly believed that the reusable equipment method of PSP reduces environmental emissions relative to single-use options. However, no research comparing entire-life cycle environmental emissions associated with the two approaches exists. METHODS: A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was conducted comparing PSP in a European hospital using a single-use applicator versus a reusable equipment method. RESULTS: Findings highlight the superior environmental perfo

Woody plant encroachment enhanced negative interactions in Arctic plant communities over the last 24,000 years.

Woody taxa encroachment in the Arctic has been widely observed. However, it remains uncertain how plant interactions are affected by such encroachment due to the lack of long-term observational data. Here, we reconstruct plant composition and functional trait turnover during post-glacial woody encroachment using sedimentary ancient DNA from nine lakes in the Siberia-Alaska region. Environmentally constrained null models are applied to partition plant interactions from the pure environment driven plant co-occurrence signal. Our results show that plant interactions shifted from predominantly pos

Development of High-Performance Catalytic Ceramic Membrane Microchannel Reactor for Carbon Dioxide Conversion to Methanol.

Conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) to methanol in a traditional reactor (TR) with catalytic packed bed faces the challenge of lower reactant conversion due to thermodynamic limitations. On the contrary, membrane reactors selectively remove reaction products, enhancing the conversion, but it is still limited, and existing designs face challenges of structural integrity and scale-up complications. Therefore, for the first time, a ceramic membrane microchannel reactor (CMMR) system was developed with 500 µm deep microchannels, incorporated with catalytic membrane for CO2 conversion to methanol. Antarctic rocky outcrops as microbial diversity and biogeochemical hotspots.

Climate-driven deglaciation is rapidly exposing rocky outcrops in polar-alpine landscapes, creating novel habitats for organisms. Yet, the contribution of these new habitats to microbial diversity and biogeochemical processes remains largely overlooked. Here, we assessed how Antarctic rocky outcrops shape soil microbial diversity, organic matter (OM) formation, and nutrient cycling by comparing thin soils developed on rocky outcrops with soils from surrounding areas on Livingston Island, Antarctica. In these soils, we characterized bacterial and fungal communities, OM composition and extracell

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) as a Source of Bioactive Compounds: Functional Properties and Technological Aspects-A Review.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), a member of the Solanaceae family, originates from South America and is currently cultivated worldwide. In tropical regions, it grows as a perennial plant, whereas in temperate and subtropical climates, it is cultivated as an annual because of its sensitivity to frost. Tomato fruits are an important source of bioactive compounds, including carotenoids, polyphenols, minerals, and vitamins. Their widespread consumption and status as one of the most commonly consumed horticultural crops worldwide make tomatoes an important dietary source of these compounds. Tomat

Evaluating the Scale of Natural and Mechanical Airflows for Surface-Based Atmospheric Pollutant Removal.

Removal strategies for atmospheric pollutants are increasingly being considered to mitigate global warming and improve public health. However, the global potential of surface-based removal techniques has not yet been quantified under atmospheric transport. We evaluate the atmospheric pollutant transport to surfaces and assess the potential of surface-based removal technologies across infrastructure. Cities provide the highest transport-limited removal potential, with median annual atmospheric flow rates of 30 GtCO2, 0.06 GtCH4, 0.007 GtNOx, and 0.0001 GtPM2.5 to their total surface area. Citie

Performance and Statistical Assessment of Deep Learning Frameworks for Low-Temperature Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO x.

Nitrogen oxides (NO x ) are among the most harmful emissions produced by internal combustion engines, contributing to air pollution, acid rain, and climate-related impacts. Accurate modeling of the NO x reduction process is therefore essential for developing efficient emission control technologies and optimizing catalytic performance. This study explores the potential of advanced deep learning architectures to predict NO x conversion efficiency in an ethanol-assisted selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. The pitfalls of incidence-based time series regression for inferring the effects of weather on infectious diseases.

A central question in environmental epidemiology is how the weather affects infectious diseases. Time-series regression (TSR) on population level case-counts data is widely used to estimate weather effects; however, this design may be biased due to the complexities of infectious disease dynamics, including nonlinear feedback, various types of noise, and latent, dynamic variables such as population immunity. Here, we assess the reliability of incidence-based TSR through a controlled simulation study across four different climates and fifty scenarios representing different pathogens. For each sc

An adaptive client selection method for long tailed scene classification in autonomous driving.

Collaborative autonomous driving utilizing Federated Learning (FL) is frequently constrained by long-tailed data distributions and perceptual imbalances. Implementing federated learning for environmental scene classification in autonomous driving faces severe challenges due to the long-tailed and non-IID distribution of real-world climatic data. To address this, this paper proposes FedRare, a client selection framework based on a multi-dimensional utility function, integrating scenario criticality ([Formula: see text]), distribution rarity ([Formula: see text]), and local update quality ([Form

Sustainable proteins for future food systems: nutritional quality, environmental trade-offs, and consumer acceptance.

The global food system is under growing strain to deliver sufficient high-quality protein for a rising population, while curbing environmental degradation, tackling climate change, and maintaining long-term food security. Conventional livestock production is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, excessive land and water use, and biodiversity loss, which has boosted demand for sustainable alternative proteins such as plant-based, microbial, algal, insect, fermented, and cultivated meat products. This multidisciplinary review comprehensively assesses these emerging protein sources across n

Insights into plant-part-specific N2O production in roots and shoots of chicory (Cichorium intybus) using stable isotope labelling.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) contributes substantially to climate change and stratospheric ozone degradation, yet large uncertainties in its global budget point to overlooked sources. Growing evidence suggests plants produce N2O, but the mechanisms remain poorly constrained. For the first time, we resolved organ-specific N2O formation in roots and shoots of aseptically cultivated chicory (Cichorium intybus) under light and dark conditions, combining 15N-labelling (15NO3 -/15NH4 +) with position-specific isotope analysis to identify N2O formation pathways. All cultures produced N2O under dark conditions

Current Challenges in Yersinia Diagnosis and Treatment.

Yersinia bacteria (Yersinia enterocolitica, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis) are commonly found in nature in all climatic zones and are isolated from food (mainly raw pork, unpasteurized milk, or contaminated water), soil, and surface water, rarely from contaminated blood. Yersinia infection occurs through sick or asymptomatic carriers and contact with the feces of infected animals. The invasion of specific bacterial serotypes into the host cell is based on the type 3 secretion system (T3SS), which directly introduces many effector proteins (Yersinia outer proteins-Yops) into the host cell. The co

Identification of the exposure pathway to micro-scaled biogenic silica debris via diet and its potential effect in promoting esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has remained highly prevalent for decades in certain regions, such as the Taihang Mountains in China, though its etiology remains unclear. The previous study unveiled silica fragments in resected ESCC tissues in this region, raising a hypothesis about their relationship with ESCC. Yet, the exposure pathway of these silica fragments and their role in the high incidence of ESCC remain unclear. Here, we report micro-scaled needle-like biogenic silica debris (NL-BSDs) as contaminants in wheat flour, primarily originating from densest siliceous outgrowths o

Carbonation of MgO Single Crystals: Implications for Direct Air Capture of CO2.

Direct air capture (DAC) may be feasible to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere at the gigaton scale, holding promise to become a major contributor to climate change mitigation. Mineral looping using magnesium oxide (MgO) is potentially an economical, efficient, and sustainable pathway to gigaton-scale DAC. The hydroxylation and carbonation of MgO determine the efficiency of the looping process, but their rates and mechanisms remain uncertain. In this work, MgO single crystals were reacted in air or CO2 at varying humidities and characterized by X-ray scattering, microscopy, and vi

Carbon dioxide removal from triethanolamine solution using living microalgae-loofah biocomposites.

Nowadays, the climate change crisis is an urgent matter in which carbon dioxide (CO2) is a major greenhouse gas contributing to global warming. Amine solvents are commonly used for CO2 capture with high efficiency and absorption rates. However, solvent regeneration consumes an extensive amount of energy. One of alternative approaches is amine regeneration through microalgae. Recently, living biocomposites, intensifying traditional suspended cultivation, have been developed. With this technology, immobilizing microalgae on biocompatible materials with binder outperformed the suspended system in

Parameters estimation of gas capture through Mixed Matrix Membrane (MMM) with CFD.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture is a crucial process to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and reduce anthropogenic impact on climate change. The 3-D model is choosing to capture carbon dioxide from real natural gas (NG) using a mixed matrix membrane (MMM) consisting of polysulfone (PSF) with nanoparticles of covalent organic frameworks (CT-1). In this work, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) estimated the parameters of MMM for CO2 gas separation. Fick's law is utilized of gas transport over a membrane module, whereas the Navier-Stokes equation describes the gas transport in both the feed and perm
