Peer mentor versus teacher delivery of a physical activity program on the effects of BMI and daily activity: protocol of a school-based group randomized controlled trial in Appalachia.

BACKGROUND: Rural Appalachian populations have poorer health and fewer positive health-related behaviors compared to other United States populations. Appalachians are the most sedentary U.S. population and teens are particularly sedentary. Obesity prevention through improving physical activity is a top priority in Rural Healthy People 2020. Obesity prevalence among Appalachian teens exceeds the national rates of 13.9% and has consistently been greater than 26%. Organized sports has not been effective at improving daily physical activity or health outcomes for Appalachian teens. The purpose of

Surface modification of graphene oxide with stimuli-responsive polymer brush containing β-cyclodextrin as a pendant group: Preparation, characterization, and evaluation as controlled drug delivery agent.

In this work, stimuli-responsive graphene oxide/polymer brush nanocomposites (GPBNs) prepared through the polymerization of acrylic acid (AA), N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and acrylated β-cyclodextrin (Ac-β-CD) from the graphene oxide (GO) surface. The attachment of polymers on the GO surface was approved using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis spectroscopy (UV-vis) and thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the morphological change on the GO surface after polymer grafting. Transition electron mic

Study of the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux symptoms and the role of each in relation to the GERD Impact Scale, based on a population of patients admitted for laparoscopic surgery compared to a control group.

INTRODUCTION: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), demonstrated to impair quality of life (QoL), appears to show significant variation in its prevalence. Estimation of the prevalence is difficult. When defined as at least weekly heartburn and/or acid regurgitation, the prevalence reported in Asia is 2.5-27.6%, in Europe 23.7% and in the US 28.8%. AIM: The study evaluates the prevalence of GERD symptoms in the assessment of the GERD Impact Scale (GERD-IS) in two age groups of patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Evaluation of the prevalence of GERD symptoms with the GERD Impact Scale survey in

Efficacy and safety of praziquantel in preschool-aged and school-aged children infected with Schistosoma mansoni: a randomised controlled, parallel-group, dose-ranging, phase 2 trial.

BACKGROUND: Praziquantel has been the drug of choice for schistosomiasis control for more than 40 years, yet surprisingly, the optimal dose for children younger than 4 years is not known. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of escalating praziquantel dosages in preschool-aged children (PSAC). METHODS: We did a randomised controlled, parallel-group, single-blind, dose-ranging, phase 2 trial in PSAC (2-5 years) and school-aged children (SAC; aged 6-15 years) as a comparator group in southern Côte d'Ivoire. Children were randomly assigned (1:1:1:1) to 20 mg/kg, 40 mg/kg, or 60 mg/kg prazi

Project LifeSkills - a randomized controlled efficacy trial of a culturally tailored, empowerment-based, and group-delivered HIV prevention intervention for young transgender women: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Transgender women in the U.S. have an alarmingly high incidence rate of HIV infection; condomless anal and vaginal sex is the primary risk behavior driving transmission. Young transgender women are the subpopulation at the highest risk for HIV. Despite this, there are no published randomized controlled efficacy trials testing interventions to reduce sexual risk for HIV among this group. This paper describes the design of a group-based intervention trial to reduce sexual risk for HIV acquisition and transmission in young transgender women. METHODS: This study, funded by the Nationa
