Intrasellar arachnoid cyst is very rare. We report a case of intrasellar arachnoid cyst. A 44-year-old male was admitted for evaluation of his headache and visual disturbance on August 6, 1993. Neurological examination revealed bilateral decreased visual acuity and visual field defect. Endocrinological examination showed panhypopituitarism. Other neurological findings were normal. X-ray film of the skull showed a ballooning dilation of the sella turcica with thinning of the sellar floor. CT scan showed a cystic lesion with CSF-density occupied the sella. After intravenous administration of con

BACKGROUND: Spinal bronchogenic cysts are rare entities arising from errors in embryogenesis and consisting of respiratory epithelial cells. To date, there are three other published accounts of intramedullary cysts, which were partially resected and thereby warrant close follow-up and monitoring. The authors present an illustrative case of a patient presenting with Klippel-Feil anomaly and a large intramedullary bronchogenic cyst in the upper cervical spine.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors noted fusion of the C5-6 laminae as they performed the C2-6 laminectomy. After dural opening, an intramedullar

Loose peritoneal cysts - unexpected finding at laparoscopic surgery for suspected extrauterine pregnancy, a case report A 29 year old woman was admitted to inpatient care in the 7th week of pregnancy due to three previous episodes of abdominal pain. At admission a suspected pseudogestational sac and 2 × 3 centimetres of fluid in the cul-de-sac was noted at vaginal ultrasound examination. After two days she again developed pain and a laparoscopy was performed due to suspected extrauterine pregnancy. Instead, three clusters of thin-walled, clear cysts was found lying loose in the cul-de-sac. The

Spinal intradural arachnoid cysts (SACs) account for approximately 10% of total arachnoid cysts, and iatrogenic attribution is rare. A 50-year-old male presented with low back pain and severe radiating pain in his right leg along the S1 dermatome. He had an interspinous device (ISD) inserted 10 years earlier. Plain radiographs showed breakage and angular movement of the ISD at L4/5. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbosacral spine disclosed multiple intradural cystic tumors in the entire lumbar region. He underwent removal of the ISD, laminectomy, and resection of the intradural cyst.

Pericardial cysts are not common and rarely cause symptoms. We report 2 cases of atypically located pericardial cysts with hemodynamic compromise because of the direct compression of the pulmonary veins and the right pulmonary artery. In the first case, transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) disclosed a round cystic mass compressing the posterior wall of the right pulmonary artery, with blood flow reduction in the right lung. Because of the symptoms, the pericardial cyst was drained and the patient had an uneventful 1-year follow-up. In the second case, a large cystic mass compressing the left

Hydatic disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus is an endemic disease and an important public health problem in some countries of the world. The results of surgical treatment are associated with a high rate of mortality, morbidity, postoperative recurrence and a long period of hospital stay and the medical treatment results are still controversial. Although the percutaneous aspiration and treatment of liver hydatid cysts were considered to be contraindicated due to risks of anaphylactic shock and dissemination of clear-crystal fluid into the abdomen, several reports of successful percutaneou

Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are described in middle-aged twin brothers. One of them presented with recurrent attacks of headache. In this patient the cyst had reached a size large enough to obstruct the cerebrospinal fluid pathway, resulting in hydrocephalus. The twin brother, although asymptomatic, was suspected of the anomaly and investigated because of the similarity of his ocular signs. The diagnosis was confirmed by computerized tomography in both the patient and his brother. The latter proved to have a smaller colloid cyst situated anteriorly in the third ventricle with no obstr

INTRODUCTION: Bone cyst formation in hips increases as osteoarthritis worsens. Although bone cysts in hips have been described in many studies, their etiology remains unclear and under debate. The purpose of this study was to investigate the communication between a bone cyst and the joint space, as well as the relationship between the severity of osteoarthritis and the formation of subchondral bone cysts in dysplastic hips.
METHOD: We studied bone cysts from 150 dysplastic hips in 97 patients by computed tomography (CT) and plain radiography. We investigated the distribution of the bone cysts

Current literature describes 3 different pathogenetic types of ovarian endometriotic cysts. Cortical invagination cysts arise when surface ovarian endometriotic deposits adhere to another structure (such as the broad ligament), blocking the egress of menstrual fluid produced by cycling endometriosis, which then collects and causes the ovarian cortex to invaginate. Surface inclusion cyst-related endometriotic cysts develop when endometriotic tissue colonizes preexisting inclusion cysts. Physiological cyst-related endometriotic cysts occur when endometriosis gains access to a follicle, such as a

Simple hepatic cysts are typically saccular, thin-walled masses with fluid-filled epithelial lined cavities. They arise from aberrant bile duct cells that develop during embryonic development. With the development of diagnostic modalities such as ultrasonography (US), CT, and MRI, simple hepatic cysts are frequently detected in clinical examinations. US is the most useful and noninvasive tool for diagnosis of simple hepatic cysts and can usually differentiate simple hepatic cysts from abscesses, hemangiomas, and malignancies. Cysts with irregular walls, septations, calcifications, or daughter

OBJECTIVES: Isolated paracardial cysts, defined as cystic structures adjacent to or originating from the heart, are rare and etiologically heterogeneous congenital abnormalities. The purpose of this study was to review our experience with prenatally diagnosed isolated cysts.
METHODS: We reviewed retrospectively the medical charts and ultrasound records of all cases with an antenatal diagnosis of paracardial cyst at our institution between 2001 and 2006. Where applicable, the diagnosis was further substantiated by other imaging modalities and pathology.
RESULTS: The cysts in six fetuses were

BACKGROUND: Neurenteric cysts (NCs) are rare congenital cystic lesions accounting for approximately 0.3-1.3% of spinal tumors. Although uncommon in children, cervical NCs can cause rapid spinal cord compression. Recurrence after incomplete resection has been well documented; however, the fact that these lesions resemble arachnoid cysts and the timing of recurrence have not been sufficiently emphasized.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 2-year-old boy presented with rapidly progressive neurological deterioration over 2 weeks, progressing from occipital pain to quadriplegia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Liver cysts are common benign lesions with rare malignancy potential. Distinguishing between benign and malignant tumors within liver cysts is challenging. We present the case of a patient with a chronically expanding hematoma within a liver cyst that was resected under suspicion of liver cystadenocarcinoma. A 73-year-old female patient presented with elevated hepatobiliary enzyme levels, no viral hepatitis, elevated tumor marker levels, and preserved liver capacity (Child-Pugh grade A). Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a large cyst (>10 cm) occupying the right lobe and a 25-mm mass lesion w

OBJECTIVE: Several symptoms are common to knee osteoarthritis and Baker's cyst. To what extent each condition contributes to the patient's discomfort is still a matter of debate. The aim of the present study was twofold: first, to compare the burden of symptoms in patients with isolated knee osteoarthritis and patients with knee osteoarthritis associated with Baker's cyst; second, to assess the outcomes after conservative treatments.
SUBJECT AND METHODS: Patients suffering from monolateral idiopathic knee osteoarthritis were enrolled. Demographic, anthropometric and clinical data (KOOS scale)

Cyst enlargement in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is associated with cAMP-activated proliferation of cyst-lining epithelial cells and transepithelial fluid secretion into the cyst lumen via cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) chloride channel leading to renal failure for which no effective treatment is currently available. We previously reported that steviol retards Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cyst enlargement by inhibiting CFTR channel activity and promoting proteasomal-mediated CFTR degradation. It is imperative to examine the effect of stev

Mucous cysts of the vulva most commonly arise from the vaginal vestibule and the inner surface of the labia minora, and to our knowledge, only a single previous case arising within the clitoris has been described. We report the case of a 50-year-old multiparous woman who presented with a two-year history of asymptomatic progressive enlargement of the clitoris to 21 mm × 15 mm × 15 mm. Surgical excision under general anesthesia revealed a well-demarcated cyst containing yellow-white viscous mucoid fluid within the clitoral tissue. A compressed but morphologically intact clitoral glans was prese

INTRODUCTION: In human neurocysticercosis (NCC), the cellular and molecular mechanisms of host-parasite interactions triggering brain inflammation and epileptic seizures in Sub-Saharan Africa are poorly understood. Emerging evidence indicates that the viability of the cyst of the pork tapeworm Taenia solium determines brain inflammation and, thus, symptom development and disease severity. We have previously shown that while viable cyst-released molecules promote immune regulation and often asymptomatic disease, the fluid from degenerating cysts causes inflammation in microglia and peripheral i

A 43-year-old man presented with dizziness, head instability, and facial reddening, always in relation to body posture and without fever or systemic manifestations. Chest radiography revealed a large cavity with an air-fluid level in the right upper hemithorax. A right upper lobectomy was performed to remove a large bronchogenic cyst. The presentation with cardiac but no respiratory symptoms is uncommon but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with intrathoracic cysts.

BACKGROUND: Genus Desulfovibrio species is a sulphate-reducing anaerobic gram-negative rod that resides in the human oral cavity and intestinal tract. It was reported as the causative pathogen of bacteraemia and abdominal infections, but not renal cyst infection, and Desulfovibrio fairfieldensis has higher pathogenicity than other Desulfovibrio species.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old man was on haemodialysis for end-stage renal failure due to autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. On admission, he had a persistent high-grade fever, right lumbar back pain, and elevated C-reactive prot
