Although the association between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and maternal postpartum depression has been reported, the association between these two factors during pregnancy has not been sufficiently examined. We compared pregnant women with and without GDM to clarify the association and examined factors related to depression in pregnant women with GDM. Questionnaires were administered longitudinally to pregnant Japanese women in the third trimester and at 2 and 4 weeks postpartum. One hundred and five and 108 pregnant women with and without GDM, respectively, were included in the stud

INTRODUCTION: Distress during pregnancy and postpartum is common and contributes to poor infant and maternal outcomes, such as developmental delays and mental health disorders, respectively. Anxiety sensitivity, or fear of the symptoms of anxiety (eg, palpitations, confusion), is a risk factor known to increase distress across psychological and health-related conditions. Given the physiologic and emotional changes that occur during the perinatal period, anxiety sensitivity may be a salient risk factor for maternal distress. In this pilot study, we aimed to understand the unique role of prenata

PURPOSE: Psychosocial stress, depression, and anxiety are prevalent during pregnancy and can be associated with adverse birth outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an online Mindfulness Group Therapy (MGT) program in improving perinatal maternal psychological distress and perinatal outcomes among women with twin pregnancies.
METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, 120 women carrying twins were assigned to MGT groups (6-week, 120 minutes of mindfulness intervention weekly) or control groups (usual perinatal care and health education). The primary outcomes were mater

BACKGROUND: Gestational anemia, most commonly caused by iron deficiency, may increase the risk of maternal anxiety and depression and have a potentially far-reaching impact on mother's and newborn's health. Several mechanisms, such as effects of iron deficiency on cerebral neurotransmitter metabolism, have been suggested. None of the earlier studies have assessed the association between gestational anemia and depression, anxiety and pregnancy-related anxiety simultaneously.

OBJECTIVE: Limited evidence suggests that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants can hinder platelet aggregation and can increase the risk of hemorrhage. Because antenatal depression is common and is often treated with antidepressants, we sought to determine if exposure to SSRI antidepressants in late pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of postpartum hemorrhage compared with non-SSRI antidepressants.
METHOD: This was a population-based nested case-control study of women aged 16 to 45 years in Ontario, Canada, who received government-funded prescription covera

BACKGROUND: Anaemia is a reduction in haemoglobin concentration below a threshold, resulting from various factors including severe blood loss during and after childbirth. Symptoms of anaemia include fatigue and weakness, among others, affecting health and quality of life. Anaemic pregnant women have an increased risk of premature delivery, a low-birthweight infant, and postpartum depression. They are also more likely to have anaemia in the postpartum period which can lead to an ongoing condition and affect subsequent pregnancies. In 2019 nearly 37% of pregnant women globally had anaemia, and e

INTRODUCTION: Compared to women who have given birth before (i.e., multiparas), those giving birth for the first time (i.e., primiparas) show higher cortisol levels. Psychological factors may play a role; hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal activation is a well-described stress response. Primiparity also predicts greater risk for postpartum depression, which may be related to greater correspondence between cortisol and mood following prenatal cortisol elevations. The current study examined associations among parity, perinatal cortisol adaptation, pregnancy-specific distress, and postpartum mood.

OBJECTIVE: Despite higher morbidity and mortality risks, parents of preterm infants miss postpartum visits more often than parents of full-term infants. Whether the introduction of telemedicine improved access to postpartum care among parents of infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is unknown. We aimed to compare postpartum visit attendance and care comprehensiveness for NICU parents before and after the option of telemedicine.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum haemorrhage is a major obstetric risk worldwide. Therefore risk factors need to be investigated to control for this serious complication. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis revealed that the use of both serotonergic and non-serotonergic antidepressants in pregnancy are associated with a higher risk of postpartum haemorrhage. However, use of antidepressants in pregnancy is often necessary because untreated depression in pregnancy is associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcome, such as postpartum depression, preterm birth and dysmaturity. Therefore it i

It is well known that the perinatal period supposes a considerable risk of relapse for women with bipolar disorder (BD) and recurrent major depressive disorder (rMDD), with the consequences that this entails. Therefore, the authors sought to provide a critical appraisal of the evidence related to specific risk factors for this population with the aim of improving the prevention of relapses during pregnancy and postpartum. The authors conducted a systematic review assessing 18 original studies that provided data on risk factors for relapse or recurrence of BD and/or rMDD in the perinatal period

Nearly half of women describe childbirth as traumatic in some way, making them more vulnerable to perinatal psychiatric illness. Patients with high risk pregnancies, such as abnormal placentation, are even more susceptible to childbirth related mental health sequelae. There are no formal recommendations for mental health intervention in women with placenta accreta spectrum (PAS). In many institutions, the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale is used to assess for depressive and anxiety symptoms during pregnancy and postpartum. Women with PAS should be screened at time of diagnosis, monthly un

Stress-coping strategies have been implicated in depression. The control of stress coping may improve the symptom and higher prevalence of depression during the postpartum period in women. However, the neuronal mechanisms underlying stress coping remain to be fully elucidated in postpartum women. In this study, we examined how locus coeruleus-noradrenergic (LC-NA) neurons, which have been associated with both stress coping and depression, regulate changes in coping style induced by subchronic exposure to unfamiliar male mice as a social threat in postpartum female mice. In contrast to virgin f

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment (CM) has been associated with a range of adult health outcomes; however, extant research has focused more on exposure to a single form of abuse rather than multiple forms. Moreover, very few studies have specifically investigated the impact of CM on exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine: (1) the individual and combined effects of multiple forms of CM on EBF outcomes; and (2) whether postpartum depression and maternal stress act to mediate or moderate the association between CM and EBF.
METHOD: Cross-sectional survey

Parental warmth plays a critical role in child development and can have long-term impacts on attachment and other psychosocial outcomes. Perinatal depression-depression occurring during pregnancy or the first year postpartum-can hinder parenting practices such as parental warmth, as symptoms of depression may render mothers less sensitive and responsive to their children's cues and needs. This study explores whether recipients of Mothers and Babies (MB), a cognitive-behavioral perinatal depression preventive intervention, exhibit greater parental warmth than participants receiving community-ba

BACKGROUND: Depression in pregnancy negatively affects maternal-child health. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive brain stimulation treatment for depression, has not been evaluated in pregnancy.
OBJECTIVE: To conduct a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate tDCS for antenatal depression.
METHODS: In this pilot RCT in Toronto, Ontario (October 2014 to December 2016), adult pregnant women 14-32 weeks gestation with major depressive disorder who had declined antidepressant medication were considered for inclusion. Participants were randomly assigned 1:1 t

OBJECTIVES: Exposure to child abuse (CA) is associated with an increased risk of developing asthma and allergies; it is unknown if that risk is present across generations. This study investigated if 2-year-old children born to mothers with a history of CA were at an increased risk of receiving a diagnosis of asthma or allergies.
METHODS: Data from 1,551 participants were collected as part of the All Our Babies (AOB) study, a prospective pregnancy cohort. During pregnancy, each woman provided information about her own history of CA, and at 24 months postpartum, she provided information about h
