Dilatation of the ascending aorta, a frequently reported sign of aortic stenosis, was assessed in 47 patients for whom aortic angiograms has been recorded. Twenty-eight of the patients had rheumatic valvar disease and 19 had congenital aortic stenosis. A simple ratio between the maximal width of the mid-ascending aorta and the width of the aortic root was calculated. Patients with congenital aortic stenosis had significantly greater supravalvar aortic dilatation than did those with rheumatic aortic valve involvement. There was no correlation between the pressure difference across the aortic va

Over a ten-year period, of more than 1,000 children whose primary vesicoureteral reflux was treated surgically, there were 54 children with 80 single ureters which were massively dilated. Primary reconstruction with ureteral tailoring was done in 25 ureters with a success rate of 92 per cent. Forty-five ureters were temporarily diverted because of uncontrolled infection and/or azotemia. In almost half of these instances, temporary diversion resulted in improvement in ureteral caliber to such an extent that nontailored reimplantation could be performed with a success rate of 87 per cent. Six ki

A further case of osteogenesis imperfecta with valvular heart disease is added to the 12 already reported in the literature. The presence of a dilated mitral annulus and a ballooned mitral leaflet in this case together with the findings reported in the literature leave little doubt as to the relationship between the valvular lesion and the underlying connective tissue disorder.

Nonaneurysmal anomalies of the retinal veins were studied in 1,400 consecutive locally and systemically healthy individuals whose ages ranged from eight to 66 years. The anomalies included veno-venous crossing, triconfluence, congenital dilatation, prepapillary loop, anomalous macular veins, and retinociliary vein. Excluding the last three, these anomalies are not at all rare. Hypotheses to explain the development of veno-venous crossings and the bifurcation of retinal veins are also presented.

Patients with aortic incompetence frequently present with anatomical and pathological challenges such as elliptical dilated annulus, dilated aortic root, dilated ascending aorta, and with no calcification in the aortic cusps or annulus. Patients are commonly in graver clinical condition as a result of a long silent clinical course before overt congestive heart failure. All of the above make transcatheter therapies for native aortic valve regurgitation more challenging with poorer outcomes, escalating the risk of insufficient anchoring, prosthesis migration, and residual paravalvular leak compa

BACKGROUND: Segmental dilatation of the colon (SDC) is a rare disease that is characterized by an abrupt segment of dilated colon between regions of normal-sized colon. We herein report a case of SDC associated with Hirschsprung's disease (HD).
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient developed abdominal distension soon after birth, and enema examination showed localized intestinal dilatation from the descending colon to the sigmoid colon with significant caliber changes on both the oral and anal sides of the dilated colon. The findings of the rectal mucosal biopsy were consistent with HD. We considere

BACKGROUND: The Diagnostic Criteria for Pancreaticobiliary Maljunction 2013 were published by the Japanese Study Group on Pancreaticobiliary Maljunction (JSGPM) in 2014. The committee of JSGPM for diagnostic criteria for pancreaticobiliary maljunction has established the standard diameter of the bile duct, and a definition of dilatation of the bile duct was proposed in 2014.
METHODS: The committee of JSGPM prepared the diagnostic criteria for congenital biliary dilatation in 2014, and a final revised version was approved in 2015.
RESULTS: Congenital biliary dilatation is defined as a congeni

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced liver injury after potent chemotherapy is a considerable problem in patients undergoing liver resection. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between the fractal dimension (FD) of Tc-99m diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) galactosyl human serum albumin (GSA) and pathologic change of liver parenchyma in liver cancer patients who have undergone chemotherapy.
METHODS: We examined 34 patients (10 female and 24 male; mean age, 68.5 years) who underwent hepatectomy. Hepatic injury was defined as steatosis more than 30 %, grade 2-3 sinusoidal d

Acute thoracic symptoms are common among adults visiting emergency departments in the United States. Adults with these symptoms constitute a large burden on the overall resources used in the emergency department. The wide range of possible causes can make a definitive diagnosis challenging, even after clinical evaluation and initial laboratory testing. In addition to radiography and computed tomography, thoracic ultrasonography (US) is an alternative imaging modality that can be readily performed in real time at the patient's bedside to help diagnose many thoracic diseases manifesting acutely

Clinical studies have long suggested the presence of a specific cardiomyopathy in sickle cell anemia secondary to intracoronary thrombosis and subsequent infarction. Fifty-two autopsy patients were studied (48 with SS hemoglobin, 4 with S-C or S-Thal hemoglobin) to ascertain the range of cardiac pathologic abnormalities associated with this disease. The average age was 17 years (range 1 month to 48 years). Renal failure and infection were the most common causes of death; the former was a more common cause in adults than in children. Right and left ventricular hypertrophy and dilatation were th

With the rapid development of the social economy in China, the incidence of diseases caused by excessive drinking is gradually increasing as well. Alcoholic cardiomyopathy refers to long-term high intake of ethanol, and has typical dilated cardiomyopathy characteristics, such as, hemodynamic changes, symptoms, signs, and morphological features. It is a kind of cardiomyopathy that excludes other causes of dilated cardiomyopathy. Due to the lack of specific pathological changes, the forensic pathological identification of alcoholic cardiomyopathy can only be based on the patient's medical histor

A 37-year-old female originating from Central Africa presented with cardiac failure, aortic insufficiency and aortic root dilatation of supposed dystrophic origin. Left coronary ostial dilatation and dense adhesions between the aorta and the pulmonary trunk at operation were the only unusual features. However, pathological examination evoked a syphilitic disease and serology confirmed luetic infection. The diagnosis and the therapeutic approach are discussed. Syphilitic aneurysms belong to the protohistory of vascular surgery, but, in the antibiotherapy era, tracking a syphilitic aneurysm is l

The authors report a case of single-lobe Caroli's disease discovered at the radiologic exploration during a laparoscopic cholecystectomy leading to a left hepatic lobectomy 2.5 months later. Localized dilatation of the intrahepatic bile-ducts are infrequent. They may be associated with others pathological conditions such as cystic dilatation of the extrahepatic bile-ducts, congenital hepatic fibrosis of the liver or renal pathology. Hepatic resection is the logical treatment of such localized lesions, but it may have an excessive risk in case of association with a congenital hepatic fibrosis o

Hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a frequent pulmonary complication of end-stage liver disease, characterized by impaired arterial oxygenation induced by intrapulmonary vascular dilatation. Its prevalence ranges from 4% to 47% in patients with cirrhosis due to the different diagnostic criteria applied among different studies. Nitric oxide overproduction and angiogenesis seem to be the hallmarks of a complicated pathogenetic mechanism, leading to intrapulmonary shunting and ventilation-perfusion mismatch. A classification of HPS according to the severity of hypoxemia has been suggested. Contras
