Liver failure is a heterogeneous condition which may be fatal and the primary cause is frequently unknown. Cytochrome c oxidase (COX) is encoded by three mitochondrial and nine nuclear genes. COX deficiency is genetically heterogeneous but current diagnostic methods cannot easily distinguish between mitochondrial and nuclear defects. AIMS: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients' peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) show mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. To determine the electrochemical bases of mitochondrial dysfunction, we measured electron transport chain (ETC) activity and its regulation by N-acetylcysteine (NAC) that reversed glutathione depletion and improved disease activity in SLE. ETC activity was assessed in PBL of 69 SLE patients and 37 healthy donors. Negatively isolated T cells were examined in 7 SLE patients, 11 healthy donors, and 10 nonlupus inflammatory arthritis (IA) donors.

Present knowledge of the different enzymatic steps of the denitrification chains in various bacteria, particularly Paracoccus denitrificans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been briefly reviewed. The question whether nitric oxide (NO), nitrous oxide (N2O) and other nitrogen derivatives are obligatory intermediates has been discussed. The second part is an extensive review of the structure and the function of a key enzyme in denitrification, cytochrome c551-nitrite-oxidoreductase from P. aeruginosa. Recent results on the stoichiometry of nitrite reduction have been discussed.

Codonocephalus is a monotypic genus of diplostomid digeneans and is the only genus in the sub-family Codonocephalinae. The type-species Codonocephalus urniger has an unusual progenetic metacercaria that uses frogs as intermediate hosts and can use snakes as paratenic hosts. Recent data suggest that the combined effect of oxidative stress due to aging and slightly elevated amyloid-β (Aβ) levels initiate Alzheimer's disease (AD) long before the clinical onset. Investigations of this early phase are hampered by the lack of cellular or animal models reflecting this scenario. We used SH-SY5Y cells stably transfected with an additional copy of the human AβPP gene and artificial aging by complex I inhibition. These cells show slightly elevated Aβ levels, moderately decreased ATP levels, impaired mitochondrial membrane potential, and decreased mitochondrial respiration.

The genus Rhabdochona Railliet, 1916 is one of the most speciose group of nematodes, parasites of freshwater fishes, with approximately 103 species described worldwide. Twenty-two species have been recorded in the Americas, 14 of them in Mexico. Babies born with fetal growth restriction (FGR) are at higher risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases across the life course.
