Amoebic liver abscesses, caused by Entamoeba histolytica, can rarely rupture into the pleural space, leading to massive pseudohaemoptysis. We report a case of a patient who presented with severe haemoptysis, later diagnosed with a ruptured amoebic liver abscess. Despite a negative pus culture, a positive E. histolytica IgM test confirmed the diagnosis. The patient was managed with intravenous metronidazole and ceftriaxone, along with pigtail catheter drainage, leading to a full recovery. During the last 2 decades, the same coprological techniques for the detection of parasites have been applied by the same team in the parasitology laboratories of the Children's Hospital of Bordeaux. A biomedical survey for intestinal parasites was conducted in Napsan on the island of Palawan, Philippines in September 1986. A total of 353 stool specimens were obtained from 155 males and 198 females ranging in age from 1 1/2 months to 70 years. This report describes a case of fulminant amebic colitis leading to perforation and death in a 35-yr-old homosexual man. Well defined cell-mediated immune responses were detectable following experimental immunization of hamsters with Entamoeba histolytica antigen, using glucan as an adjuvant. Peritoneal cells from amoeba antigen-glucan sensitized animals, upon incubation with specific antigen in vitro, were found to release into the supernatant a macrophage migration inhibition factor (MIF).
