PURPOSE: To determine whether lens epithelial cells (LECs) undergo apoptosis during healing after cataract surgery to further characterize the healing process of the postoperative lens capsule.
SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, Wakayama Medical University, Wakayama, Japan.
METHODS: Apoptotic cells were detected in human postoperative lens capsules using the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase deoxy-UTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) method. An increased risk for gastric cancer in patients with liver cirrhosis has recently been reported. There is a need for objective methods of assessment of oral epithelial precancerous lesions and reliable markers for the prediction of malignant change in these lesions. Cell proliferation was examined in 20 dysplastic lesions from the tongue and floor of mouth using bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) and Ki-67, and a histological compartment analysis was performed. Half of a fresh biopsy from each case was incubated in BrdU for 15 min, the other half was routinely processed and used for Ki-67 analysis. Sections from each block were immunohisto chemically stained with antibodies against BrdU and Ki-67.

BACKGROUND: L-Glutamine is the principal energy source for small intestinal enterocytes. Diminution of intestinal function, mucosal atrophy, and increased bacterial translocation have been noted during total parenteral nutrition (TPN). In a rat model of glutamine starvation, we previously showed that luminal glutamine is essential for optimal intestinal function. Transport of paraquat (PQ), a herbicidal cation, was previously investigated in a proximal (LLC-PK1), renal epithelial cell line using permeable collagen-coated filters. PQ was actively transported from the basolateral side via a cation transport system by the LLC-PK1 cells. Group B streptococci (GBS) are the most common cause of pneumonia and sepsis during the neonatal period; however, the pathogenesis of this infection is poorly understood. Cell proliferation was studied in descending, transverse and ascending colonic crypts of rats fed either 0%, 0.6%, 1.2% or 2.0% phytic acid (PA). Significant effects of phytic acid were seen only in the descending colon. No changes in crypt height were observed. Both the 1.2 and 2.0% phytic acid groups exhibited significantly lower uppermost labelled cells than the control group. Animals given 1.2% and 2.0% phytic acid also showed significantly reduced DNA synthetic cells, as indicated by lower labelling indices.

The frequency distribution patterns of monuclear and multinuclear giant cells were determined for two canine lymphoma cell lines (DT-5 and 11028), and a normal canine kidney epithelial cell line (DK). A study was made of the adhesion of liposomes, composed of dipalmitoyl- or di-stearoylphosphatidycholine, on the surface of epithelial cells in culture. Sodium fluorescein was entrapped in liposomes for their visualization by fluorescence microscopy. It is found that sonicated unilamellar liposomes adhere predominantly along the sheet margins.
