BACKGROUND: More than 400,000 Americans require dialysis, and many receive it via a prosthetic arteriovenous graft. Infection of these grafts is rare, but associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The gold standard is total graft excision with arteriotomy closure. BACKGROUND: Cardiac papillary fibroelastoma is a rare benign tumor that can cause thromboembolism. We have found no large surgical series describing its treatment and outcome.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients treated surgically for this tumor from 1985 to 2002.
RESULTS: There were 88 patients with a mean age of 62 +/- 16 years. Sixty-two (71%) were male. A new complementation group of excision-deficient xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is described in 2 patients living in the F.R.G. Dermatological, ophthalmological and neurological symptoms of XP are presented together with DNA repair characteristics such as unscheduled DNA synthesis, colony-forming ability and alkaline elution studied in cultured fibroblasts. Pediatric nonaortic arterial aneurysms are uncommon diagnoses and can be affiliated with underlying conditions, which include neurofibromatosis I, Ehlers-Danlos type IV syndrome, Kawasaki disease, Marfan syndrome, and Loeys-Dietz, polyarteritis nodosa, as well as Klippel-Trenauny syndrome. Intradural spinal cord tumors present many challenges to patients and the healthcare professionals providing treatment. Given the tumor's attachment to dural tissue, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks are an anticipated challenge. If present, CSF leaks can lead to infection and increased length of stay. Twenty-six patients underwent surgical repair of a pharyngoesophageal diverticulum at Ochsner Clinic, New Orleans, from 1957 through 1977. The majority of the patients (22) had a one-stage excision with intraluminal packing of the diverticulum and esophageal closure after excision.
