Lung diffusing capacity and exercise in subjects with previous high altitude pulmonary oedema.

Subjects with a history of high-altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE) have increased pulmonary artery pressure and more ventilation-perfusion (V'A/Q') inhomogeneity with hypoxia and exercise. We used noninvasive methods to determine whether there are differences in the pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DL,CO) and cardiac output (Q') during exercise, indicative of a more restricted pulmonary vascular bed in subjects with a history of HAPE. Eight subjects with radiographically documented HAPE and five controls with good altitude tolerance had standard pulmonary function testing and we

Systematic review of the long-term effects and economic consequences of treatments for obesity and implications for health improvement.

OBJECTIVES: To undertake a systematic review of the long-term effects of obesity treatments on body weight, risk factors for disease, and disease. METHODS: The study encompassed three systematic reviews that examined different aspects of obesity treatments. (1) A systematic review of obesity treatments in adults where the methods of the Cochrane Collaboration were applied and randomised controlled trials (RCTs) with a follow-up of at least 1 year were evaluated. (2) A systematic epidemiological review, where studies were sought on long-term effects of weight loss on morbidity and/or mortality

Fat Oxidation, But Not Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue Lipolysis, Differs Between Males and Females During a Treadmill-Based Heat Tolerance Test.

This study aimed to determine whether fat metabolism differs between males and females when exposed to extreme exercise-heat stress. Physically active males (n = 11, 23 ± 4 years, 81.7 ± 11.8 kg, body fat 16.4 ± 6.6%) and females (n = 13, 25 ± 4 years, 60.4 ± 7.1 kg, 24.4 ± 6.7%) completed a 2-h exercise-heat tolerance test (40 ° $\boldsymbol{{}^{\circ}}$ C, 40% relative humidity). Differences (pre-, post-, change, and mean difference (MD)) within and between groups were analyzed. The subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue (SCAAT) interstitial glycerol concentration and adipose tissue blood f

Effect of Capsinoids Supplementation on Fat Oxidation and Muscle Glycogen Restoration During Post-exercise Recovery in Humans.

BACKGROUND: Capsinoids (CSN), the novel non-pungent capsaicin analogs have been reported to promote metabolic health and exercise tolerance. However, the effect of CSN on fat oxidation and changes in skeletal muscle glycogen levels during post-exercise recovery has not been investigated in humans. PURPOSE: We examined the effect of CSN supplementation on energy reliance, glycogen resynthesis and molecular proteins in the skeletal muscle of young adults during post-exercise recovery. METHODS: In this crossover-designed study, nine healthy adult male volunteers (aged 21.4±0.2 years, BMI 21.9±1…

Exploring exercise modalities and their impact on inflammatory bowel disease: A systematic review of rodent colitis models.

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle factors are closely associated with the onset and progression of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Studies have demonstrated the positive effects of exercise on clinical outcomes and quality of life in individuals with IBD. Despite the well-documented role of exercise in improving IBD outcomes, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. AIM: To compare the efficacy of different exercise modalities and explore their potential physiological mechanisms in rodent models of colitis. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search of five databases from inception to September 24,

[Sports and pregnancy].

UNLABELLED: MATERNAL ASPECTS: Cardiorespiratory responses to exercise in pregnant women generally don't differ from those in nonpregnant women. Impairment of the cabability of the uteroplacental unit to maintain a sufficient oxygen and substrate supply to the fetus should be avoided by performing exercise in a submaximal range. Increase in body weight, a shift of the center of gravidity, and the ligamentous laxity in pregnancy lead to a certain joint instability and consecutively to an increased risk of injury. Therefore contact sports and sports with a high potential of injury are not suitabl

Sarcopenia as a Marker of Immunometabolic Vulnerability in Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma.

Despite advances in surgical technique and perioperative care, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains associated with poor survival. Sarcopenia is highly prevalent in PDAC and is consistently associated with inferior survival and reduced tolerance of systemic therapy. However, interventions primarily aimed at increasing muscle mass through nutritional supplementation and resistance-based exercise have yielded limited improvements in clinically meaningful postoperative outcomes. This has prompted increasing interest in sarcopenia as a marker of broader biological vulnerability rather t

Investigation of factors affecting the six-minute walk test results in hemodialysis patients.

Renal anemia, uremic myopathy, and malnutrition are some of the factors that affect the results of the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) in hemodialysis patients. We hypothesized that skeletal muscle dysfunction caused by skeletal myolysis, protein hypercatabolism, and mitochondrial deficiency are strongly related factors. The purpose of this study was to clarify the factors that affect the 6MWT results in hemodialysis patients to assess their exercise tolerance. The study included 43 outpatients from the hemodialysis unit. The 6MWT was performed, and knee extension strength, 1-leg standing time, and …

Erectile dysfunction and heart failure: the role of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors.

The phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitors are effective in treating erectile dysfunction (ED). ED and heart failure (HF) share similar risk factors, and commonly present together. This association has led to questions ranging from the safety and efficacy of PDE-5 inhibitors in HF patients to a possible role for this class of medication to treat HF patients with or without ED. In addition to endothelial dysfunction, there are causes of ED specific to patients with HF including low exercise tolerance, depression and HF medications. Before treating HF patients with PDE-5 inhibitors, patient…

Responses to temperate, cold, and hot environments and the effect of physical training.

Ten young men underwent several tests before and after a training program: a bicycle ergometer test and 60 min of moderate exercise performed at a temperate 24 degrees C; the same work load performed in heat (40.0 degrees C DB, 30.4 degrees C WB) for 3 h; and cold (10 degrees C) exposure for 60 min. Training consisted of 13 1-h sessions of hard, strenuous, and exhaustive work performed in temperate conditions four times a week. Training resulted in substantial decreases in heart rate and rectal temperature responses to exercise in temperate, minor increases in hot, and no significant changes i

Blue plaque review series: A.V. Hill, athletic records and the birth of exercise physiology.

One hundred years ago, A.V. Hill authored three manuscripts analysing athletic world records from a physiological perspective. That analysis … itself, providing one of the first descriptions of the task-dependent nature of mechanisms limiting exercise tolerance. A remarkable feature of Hill's papers is that they were written just a few years before a major revolution in muscle biochemistry, and yet Hill was still able to develop conceptually sound ideas about human performance. His hypotheses require only …

TeleHealth Resistance exercise Intervention to preserve dose intensity and Vitality in Elder Breast Cancer Patients (THRIVE 65).

BACKGROUND: Older women with breast cancer are more likely than younger women to experience dose-limiting toxicities with chemotherapy. This leads to dose reduction, treatment discontinuation, and inferior treatment outcomes. Older women are also at higher risk of long-term detrimental impacts of treatment on quality of life and physical function. AIM: The primary aim of the TeleHealth Resistance exercise Intervention to preserve dose intensity and Vitality in Elder breast cancer patients (THRIVE-65) trial is to assess the effects of an exercise and nutrition intervention on chemotherapy rela

The effect of the protective face mask on cardiorespiratory response during aerobic exercise.

The protective face mask (PFM) has been widely used for safety purposes and, after the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, its use is growing steadily, not only among healthcare personnel but also the general population. While the PFM is important to preserve the wearer from contaminating agents present in the airflow, they are well known to increase the subjective perception of breathing difficulty. Although some studies have demonstrated that PFM use worsens exercise tolerance, several studies state that there is no such limitation with the use of PFM. Moreover, no serious adverse effects durin…
