Supervised Myoelectrical Hand Gesture Recognition in Post-Acute Stroke Patients with Upper Limb Paresis on Affected and Non-Affected Sides.

In clinical practice, acute post-stroke paresis of the extremities fundamentally complicates timely rehabilitation of motor functions; however, recently, residual and distorted musculoskeletal signals have been used to initiate feedback-driven solutions for establishing motor rehabilitation. Here, we investigate the possibilities of basic hand gesture recognition in acute stroke patients with hand paresis using a novel, acute stroke, four-component multidomain feature set (ASF-4) with feature vector weight additions (ASF-14NP, ASF-24P) and supervised learning algorithms trained only by surface

Deep Learning Artificial Intelligence Tool for Automated Radiographic Determination of Posterior Tibial Slope in Patients With ACL Injury.

BACKGROUND: An increased posterior tibial slope (PTS) corresponds with an increased risk of graft failure after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR). Validated methods of manual PTS measurements are subject to potential interobserver variability and can be inefficient on large datasets. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: To develop a deep learning artificial intelligence technique for automated PTS measurement from standard lateral knee radiographs. It was hypothesized that this deep learning tool would be able to measure the PTS on a high volume of radiographs expeditiously and that these

Machine learning model for predicting hypotension following continuous renal replacement therapy initiation in end-stage kidney disease patients: a SHAP-interpretable approach.

BACKGROUND: Early prediction of intradialytic hypotension (IDH) after starting continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is critical for timely intervention. However, effective models for predicting the risk of IDH in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) undergoing CRRT are currently lacking. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a machine learning (ML)-based predictive model to facilitate the early identification of high-risk patients and to support clinical decision-making. METHODS: Adult patients with ESKD who underwent CRRT were enrolled in this study and randomly div

Machine learning-based prediction of permanent ileostomy in older adults after laparoscopic anterior resection for rectal cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Conversion from temporary stoma to a permanent stoma (PS) following loop ileostomy (LI) significantly impairs patients' quality of life and prognosis. However, few predictive tools are currently available in clinical practice. This study aims to develop and validate a machine learning (ML) model to predict the risk of PS following laparoscopic anterior resection (LAR) in older adults with rectal cancer. METHODS: Clinical data were retrospectively collected from 956 older adults (age ≥ 60 years) who underwent LAR with LI between June 2015 and December 2024 at two campuses of the Fir

An interpretable machine learning model integrating mucosal and cellular immunity to predict SARS-CoV-2 reinfection: a multicenter cohort study.

SARS-CoV-2 reinfection remains a significant public health challenge that requires accurate risk assessment across populations. Using prospectively collected data from two independent cohorts, we developed and externally validated an interpretable machine learning model for predicting symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 reinfection. The cohort comprised 1,156 adults from Wuxi and Nantong, China, with a median follow-up duration of 10 months. Reinfection occurred in 128 participants (11.1%). The model integrated eighteen clinical and immune features, and ultimately identified spike-specific nasal secretory

Comment on "Development and validation of an interpretable machine learning model for early risk prediction of acute myocardial infarction".

Cui et al. (2026) proposed an interpretable machine learning model for early prediction of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with the potential of XGBoost and SHAP based interpretation for a transparent cardiovascular triage process. Several methodological aspects may limit the model's applicability and generalizability in a clinical setting, though. First, applicability-domain filtering might have led to the exclusion of patients with extreme laboratory profiles, as these are generally the highest-acuity patients and may be the ones to benefit most from the use of decision-support systems. MXene-Configured Intelligent Mask for Long-Term Sleep Breathing Assessment during Assisted Ventilation.

Positive airway pressure therapy serves as a core therapeutic strategy for sleep-disordered breathing, with its efficacy generally evaluated via sleep breathing assessment. Nevertheless, the prevailing flow and pressure-based methods remain insufficient in both accuracy and interference resistance. Here, we propose an intelligent ventilation mask system based on the impedance humidity-sensing mechanism for long-term continuous and accurate respiratory pattern monitoring and evaluation. The integrated sensor is based on Ti3C2Tx MXenes modified with dopamine-functionalized polyethyleneimine, whi

How reactive is water at the nanoscale and how to control it?

Nanoconfined water plays a key role in nanofluidics, electrochemistry, and catalysis, yet its reactivity remains a matter of debate. Prior studies have reported both enhanced and suppressed water self-dissociation relative to the bulk, but without a consistent explanation. Here, using enhanced sampling molecular dynamics with machine-learned potentials trained at first-principles accuracy, we investigate dissociation behavior in water confined within two-dimensional slit pores and nanodroplets, using graphene and hexagonal boron nitride as model materials. We find that reactivity is extremely

Accelerating supercritical pharmaceutical formulation via interpretable data-driven prediction of drug solubility.

Drug solubility in supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) plays a pivotal role in the development of particle engineering, drug loading, and solvent-free pharmaceutical formulations. However, experimental solubility determination in supercritical systems remains costly, time-consuming, and compound-specific. In this study, an interpretable data-driven framework is proposed to support pharmaceutical formulation scientists by accurately predicting drug solubility in SC-CO2 while elucidating the governing physicochemical factors. Multiple machine learning regressors, including Extreme Gradient Boo

Molecular Engineering of Aptamers for Glioblastoma Therapy: From Simple Antagonists to AI-Driven Approaches, a Narrative Review.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an extremely aggressive and lethal brain tumor, characterized by marked molecular heterogeneity, the persistence of glioma stem cells (GSCs), and the limited permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which collectively hinder therapeutic efficacy. To address these barriers, nucleic acid aptamers, short single-stranded oligonucleotides with high affinity and specificity for molecular targets, have emerged as a promising therapeutic platform. Early unmodified aptamers, such as AS1411 and U2, demonstrated target engagement but showed limited performance due t

Utilizing UAV and orthophoto data with bathymetric LiDAR in google earth engine for coastal cliff degradation assessment.

This study introduces a novel methodology for estimating and analysing coastal cliff degradation, using machine learning and remote sensing data. Degradation refers to both natural abrasive processes and damage to coastal reinforcement structures caused by natural events. We utilized orthophotos and LiDAR data in green and near-infrared wavelengths to identify zones impacted by storms and extreme weather events that initiated mass movement processes. Our approach included change detection analysis to estimate eroded areas. Next, by applying Random Forest classifier within Google Earth Engine,

Machine learning in colorectal polyp surveillance: A paradigm shift in post-endoscopic mucosal resection follow-up.

Colorectal cancer remains a major health concern, with colorectal polyps as key precursors. Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is a common treatment, but recurrence rates remain high. Traditional surveillance strategies rely on polyp characteristics and completeness of the resection potentially missing key risk factors. Machine learning (ML) offers a transformative approach by integrating patient-specific data to refine risk stratification. Recent studies highlight ML models, such as Extreme Gradient Boosting, which outperform conventional methods in predicting polyp recurrence within one-year

Wireline‑log prediction of drilling‑induced fractures in the Woodford shale.

Drilling‑induced fractures (DIFs) form when hoop stress around a borehole exceeds tensile strength during drilling. In caprocks, they can compromise integrity and elevate risk in geological carbon storage (GCS). To warrant inclusion in containment models, DIFs must be systemic rather than incidental. This requires regional assessment, which is often impeded by the lack of expensive cores and image logs-data types typically used to document DIFs. We address this knowledge gap through machine learning (ML). Using data from two Woodford Shale wells in the US Midcontinent, we train a simple tree-b

Machine learning to improve the understanding of rabies epidemiology in low surveillance settings.

In low and middle-income countries, a large proportion of animal rabies investigations end without a conclusive diagnosis leading to epidemiologic interpretations informed by clinical, rather than laboratory data. We compared Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) with Logistic Regression (LR) for their ability to estimate the probability of rabies in animals investigated as part of an Integrated Bite Case Management program (IBCM). To balance our training data, we used Random Oversampling (ROS) and Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique. We developed a risk stratification framework based on predi

Radiomics for the Detection of Active Sacroiliitis Using MR Imaging.

Detecting active inflammatory sacroiliitis at an early stage is vital for prescribing medications that can modulate disease progression and significantly delay or prevent debilitating forms of axial spondyloarthropathy. Conventional radiography and computed tomography offer limited sensitivity in detecting acute inflammatory findings as these methods primarily identify chronic structural lesions. Conversely, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the preferred technique for detecting bone marrow edema, although it is a complex process requiring extensive expertise. Additionally, ascertaining the

Recognition of Cattle's Feeding Behaviors Using Noseband Pressure Sensor With Machine Learning.

Automatic monitoring of feeding behavior especially rumination and eating in cattle is important to keep track of animal health and growth condition and disease warnings. The noseband pressure sensor is not only able to accurately sense the pressure change of the cattle's jaw movements, which can directly reflect the cattle's chewing behavior, but also has strong resistance to interference. However, it is difficult to keep the same initial pressure while wearing the pressure sensor, and this will pose a challenge to process the feeding behavior data. This article proposed a machine learning ap
