Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder with widespread manifestations including the eye. Central serous retinopathy (CSR) has been associated as a complicating event in SLE, although it is uncommon. We present a case series of four female Chinese SLE patients who developed CSR during the course of their systemic disease. All four presented clinically with typical CSR. Six clinical features of chronic skin ulceration are employed to described a new scoring system. When utilised in 50 evaluations of chronic leg ulcers, a significant correlation with independent observations of the same ulcers, based on the clinical judgement of an expert, was obtained. The new method of scoring can be applied with ease, requires no special training, and can be used consistently by health workers.

Fluid obtained during myringotomy and tube placement in 20 patients with middle ear effusions was assayed for leukocyte esterase activity using a quantitative spectrophotometric assay. This quantitative assay used the synthetic substrate, N-tosyl indoxyl alaninate. Seven of the 20 samples showed no measurable enzyme activity (8 U/ml or less). Serum IgG and serum and secretory IgM, IgA and IgD levels were determined in 14 children with selective IgA deficiency and in 12 age and sex matched healthy controls.
