A role for maternally derived myokines to optimize placental function and fetal growth across gestation.

Exercise during pregnancy is associated with improved health outcomes for both mother and baby, including a reduced risk of future obesity and susceptibility to chronic diseases. Overwhelming evidence demonstrates a protective effect of maternal exercise against fetal birth weight extremes, reducing the rates of both large- and small-for-gestational-age infants. It is speculated that this protective effect is mediated in part through exercise-induced regulation of maternal physiology and placental development and function. However, the specific mechanisms through which maternal exercise regula

Fetal growth of the anal sinus and sphincters, especially in relation to anal anomalies.

PURPOSE AND METHODS: The anal sinuses, small furrows above the pectinate line, sometimes form perianal abscesses in adults. We examined the pattern of fetal growth of the anal sinus and sphincters using 22 mid-term (8-18 weeks) and 6 late-stage (30-38 weeks) fetuses. RESULTS: In mid-term fetuses, the external and internal sphincters gradually increased in thickness, depending on specimen size (from 0.2 to 1.5 mm), whereas the anteroposterior diameter of the anal canal at the epithelial junction was relatively stable (0.5-1.0 mm) irrespective of specimen size. Anal canal diameter increased les

Human fetal thyroid function.

The early steps of thyroid development that lead to its function in the human fetus and subsequently the further maturation that allows the human fetus to secrete thyroxine (T4) in a significant amount are reviewed here. We underline the importance of the transfer of T4 from the pregnant woman to her fetus, which contributes at all stages of the pregnancy to fetal thyroid function and development. In the first trimester of pregnancy, the temporal and structural correlation of thyroid hormone synthesis with folliculogenesis supported the concept that structural and functional maturations are cl

Oxysterols: novel biologic roles for the 21st century.

A major focus for the 21st century are the sterol intermediates in cholesterol synthesis and their metabolites. No longer considered inactive way stations in their transformation to cholesterol, both physiologic and pathophysiologic studies, though early in their development, indicate novel biologic roles for these sterols, and their oxysterol metabolites that bypass cholesterol, the expected end product. A major impetus for further inquiry is the recognition that in genetically determined errors in cholesterol synthesis such as Smith-Lemil-Opitz syndrome, the phenotypic effects on the develop

[Physiological atresia as a key moment in formation of nasal and palatine cavity].

Physiological atresia, or fetal occlusion, is an epithelial vegetation arising at a certain stage of embryonal fetal life in some organs of esophageal, respiratory and urogenital system as well as in natural openings of the head--the lid slit, external nasal openings, external and internal acoustic meatus. In parallel, tubal organs close to open later, i.e. recanalization takes place. In view of this, epithelial "plugs" in the larynx and external nasal openings have a positive biological role making a temporary obstruction for amniotic fluid penetration into the viscera. Plug-induced differenc

Molecular insights into congenital disorders of the digestive system.

Recent work is providing new insights into molecular mechanisms of digestive system development and their alteration in clinically significant disorders. An understanding of these mechanisms has largely been gained through the use of animal models, because many of the basic processes required in embryogenesis are functionally conserved among species. Such conserved factors include cell-cell signaling pathways and the regulation of gene expression. Disruption of these pathways have been implicated in several congenital disorders of the digestive system, including Hirschsprung disease, malrotati

[Embryonic development of renal fascia].

Findings on embryonal development of renal fascia are given. By the end of the second and during the third months of embryogenesis renal fascia and fascio-mesenchymal clefts as a base for the future adipocyte spaces of retroperitoneum connected with it form around kidneys due to successive rearrangements of mesenchyme.

Retinoids. A window into vertebrate development.

Vitamin A is required for maintaining healthy epithelial tissues, e.g., skin and gut, normal reproductive capacity, and vision. Vitamin A deficiency also causes premalignant changes in epithelial tissues. These observations led to the use of retinoids (vitamin A-related compounds) in treating various skin diseases and more recently to inhibit cancer growth. Retinoids are extremely teratogenic to developing vertebrate embryos, a fact which limits their clinical usefulness. In particular, specific malformations of skeletal structures are often observed; for instance, retinoic acid induces cranio

Ontogenetic allometry of ossified fetal limb bones.

The skeletal components of fetal limbs change in both size and shape throughout gestation. Relative growth of different bones, as well as differences between homologous bones of the upper and lower limbs, are not well known for all stages of fetal development. This study used human fetal skeletal material (N = 57) ranging in age from 19 to 40 weeks gestation, and in body mass from 290g to 4650g. Measurements of maximal length and minimal width were taken from the six major long bones: femur, tibia, fibula, humerus, radius, and ulna. These data were log transformed, and growth rates determined …

[Pathology of the placenta. XI. Feto-fetal transfusion syndrome].

An account is given in this part of the series of placental alterations in the foeto-foetal transfusion syndrome of monochorial twin pregnancies. Arteriovenous or less often arterio-arterial anastomoses between the two parts of the placenta were found to be conditions for such foeto-foetal transfusion. Blood is discharged on the foetal side from one twin to the other, with one of the twins being adversely affected in growth and general development (donor), which may be as bad as acardia in case of very early onset of transfusion. The other twin (recipient) will undergo better development but w

Origin of abnormality in a human simelian foetus as elucidated by our knowledge of vertebrate development.

In this paper we attempt to explain the abnormality of a simelian foetus with reference to our present knowledge of vertebrate development. The various developmental defects seem to have a single common origin: the speeding-up of the progression of cell differentiation in the notochord anlage--which is the organization centre of the embryo--during the regression of the Hensen's node. Cell activity involved in the morphogenetic movements in the chordamesoderm probably stopped before it should have. The elongation of the notochord anlage was not completed, resulting in the defective development

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals and human growth and maturation: a focus on early critical windows of exposure.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are exogenous substances that interfere with hormone synthesis, metabolism, or action. In addition, some of them could cause epigenetic alterations of DNA that can be transmitted to the following generations. Because the developing organism is highly dependent on sex steroids and thyroid hormones for its maturation, the fetus and the child are very sensitive to any alteration of their hormonal environment. An additional concern about that early period of life comes from the shaping of the homeostatic mechanisms that takes place also at that time with invol

Comparative stereological evaluation of the term allantochorion membrane in the mare pregnant with mule foals and equine foals.

Mules are derived from crossing horse mares with a donkey, in which the interest is due to gentleness and ability to work and equestrian sports. As the placenta is responsible for fetal development and maturation, knowing its typical microstructure allows us to understand how fetomaternal interactions occur in this interspecific pregnancy. Thus, the study performed a comparative stereological evaluation of volumetric composition and fetomaternal contact surface in the uterine body (UB), gravid uterine horn (GUH), and nongravid uterine horn (NGUH) of Mangalarga Paulista mare's term allantochori…

Season of birth and biomarkers of early-life environment.

OBJECTIVE: Early-life conditions play an important role in human development, affecting health status and survival. Conditions in utero partly depend on the external environment and thus vary in relation to the season of birth. The aim of this study was to investigate if people born in different seasons of the year differ in values of biomarkers that reflect conditions during fetal development. METHODS: The study was conducted among Polish rural women recruited at the Mogielica Human Ecology Study Site. The participants were 234 women aged 45 to 92 (mean = 60.2; SD = 10.44). The indicators of…

Estrogenic action by tris(2,6-dimethylphenyl) phosphate impairs the development of female reproductive functions.

Developmental exposure to environmental chemicals with estrogen-like activity is suspected to permanently impair women's health. In this study, a mouse model was used to evaluate whether tris(2,6-dimethylphenyl) phosphate (TDMPP), a chemical with a putative estrogen-like action, impairs sexual differentiation of the brain. Either TDMPP and 17β-estradiol (E2) as positive controls or sesame oil as a negative control were administered subcutaneously to dams from gestational day (GD) 14 to parturition, and to pups from postnatal day (PND) 0 to 9. Precocious puberty, irregular estrous cycles, and a

Exercise as a therapeutic intervention to optimize fetal weight.

The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease suggest the in utero environment programs offspring obesity and cardiovascular disease. Therefore, there is a need to implement safe therapeutic interventions that do not involve the intake of medications or biological products during pregnancy that can improve maternal and fetal health. Prenatal exercise is established to promote maternal and fetal health. It is generally recommended that women accumulate at least 150 min per week of moderate-intensity exercise. It has been demonstrated that prenatal exercise maintains healthy weight gain and im

Overview of Lung Development in the Newborn Human.

In human neonates rapid adaptation from an aqueous intrauterine environment to permanent air breathing is the rate-limiting step for extrauterine life, failure of which justifies the existence of neonatal intensive care units. The lung develops at about 4-6 weeks' gestation in humans as a ventral outpouching of the primitive foregut into the surrounding ventral mesenchyme, termed the laryngotracheal groove. At its posterior end lie progenitor cells that form a pair of bronchial tubes, from which arise all the distal epithelial structures of the lung. In humans, formation of the distal gas exch

Altered fetal growth, placental abnormalities, and stillbirth.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, stillbirth is one of the leading causes of death. Altered fetal growth and placental abnormalities are the strongest and most prevalent known risk factors for stillbirth. The aim of this study was to identify patterns of association between placental abnormalities, fetal growth, and stillbirth. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Population-based case-control study of all stillbirths and a representative sample of live births in 59 hospitals in 5 geographic areas in the U.S. Fetal growth abnormalities were categorized as small (<10th percentile) and large (>90th percentile) for gesta

Sonographic development of the normal foetal thorax and abdomen across gestation.

In the following review, the development of the thorax and abdomen, as described by embryologists and anatomists in modern embryological text books, is compared with sonoanatomic descriptions from 2D and 3D ultrasound studies, week by week in the first trimester. The anatomic descriptions are limited to details that are of interest for the understanding of ultrasound examinations. For the second and third trimester, the description of the sonographic development of the thorax and abdomen is divided into thoracic skeleton, diaphragm, lungs, oesophagus, stomach, liver, spleen, bowel and gall bla
