Initial impacts and field validation of host range for Boreioglycaspis melaleucae Moore (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), a biological control agent of the invasive tree Melaleuca quinquenervia (Cav.) Blake (Myrtales: Myrtaceae: Leptospermoideae).

Invasion of south Florida wetlands by the Australian paperbark tree, Melaleuca quinquenervia (Cav.) S.T. Blake (melaleuca), has caused adverse economic and environmental impacts. The tree's biological attributes and favorable ambient biophysical conditions combine to complicate efforts to restore and maintain south Florida ecosystems. Management requires an integrated strategy that deploys multiple biological control agents to forestall reinvasion and to supplement other control methods, thereby lessening recruitment and regeneration after removal of existing trees. This biological control pro…

Post partum discharge against medical advice: who leaves and does it matter?

OBJECTIVE: To examine risk factors and sequela for post partum discharge against medical advice. METHODS: We conducted cross-sectional analyses of hospital discharge data linked to American Hospital Association data for women discharged following a live birth for California, Florida, and New York in the years 1998-2000. We examined rates, risk factors, hospital readmission rate and mortality (California only), associated with discharge against medical advice after controlling for patient and hospital characteristics. RESULTS: Post partum discharge against medical advice averaged 0.10%. Rates…

Crack smokers' intention to use condoms with loved partners: intervention development using the theory of reasoned action, condom beliefs, and processes of change.

Prevalence rates of HIV infection acquired through heterosexual contacts have risen steadily since 1982. Crack cocaine smokers are at partic … erosexual drug users. Data were analyzed from 586 crack smokers recruited in Washington, DC, Miami, Florida, and Collier County, Florida who reported having both primary and casual sex partners. Participants responded to items derived from the theory of reasoned action, the theory of planned behaviour and the transtheoretical model of change. Condom use b …

Sharks at night, exposed to city light: Melatonin concentrations in two shark species differ in response to artificial light at night.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is a pervasive pollutant which can extend into coastal waters. Previous studies have revealed that ALAN can suppress melatonin levels in teleost fishes. However, the effects of ALAN on elasmobranch physiology have yet to be investigated. To address this knowledge gap, we examined the relationship between ALAN exposure and blood melatonin levels in wild nurse (Ginglymostoma cirratum) and blacktip (Carcharhinus limbatus) sharks sampled off Miami, Florida (USA). We hypothesized that sharks sampled at night in metropolitan areas exposed to high ALAN, would exhibit …

MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY PATTERNS OF INDIAN RIVER LAGOON COMMON BOTTLENOSE DOLPHINS (TURSIOPS TRUNCATUS TRUNCATUS) 2002-2020.

Mortality patterns in cetaceans are critical to understanding population health. Common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus truncatus) inhabiting the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), Florida have been subjected to four unusual mortality events (UMEs), highlighting the need to evaluate morbidity and mortality patterns. Complete gross examinations were conducted on 392 stranded dolphins and histopathological analyses were conducted for 178 animals (2002-2020). The probable causes of mortality were grouped by etiologic category: degenerative, metabolic, nutritional, inflammatory (infectious and non…

Using bus critical driving events as surrogate safety measures for pedestrian and bicycle crashes based on GPS trajectory data.

Pedestrian and bicycle safety is a key component in traffic safety studies. Various studies were conducted to address pedestrian and bicycle … rian and bicycle surrogate safety measures for bus stops. A city-wide trajectory data from Orlando, Florida was used, which contains around 300 buses, 6,700,000 GPS records, and 1300 bus stops. Three critical driving events were identified based on the buses' acceleration rates and stop time; hard acceleration, hard deceleration, and long stop. The relati …

Discerning rural Appalachian stakeholder attitudes toward memory screening.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this descriptive study was to examine Appalachian stakeholder attitudes toward routine memory screening, and to compare and contrast results from a similar study conducted in an ethnically diverse rural Florida cohort. Determining perceptions about memory screening is essential prior to developing culturally relevant programs for increasing early dementia detection and management among rural underserved older adults at risk of cognitive impairment. Benefits of early detection include ruling out other causes of illness and treating accordingly, delaying onset of dementia s…

In-depth approach for identifying crash causation patterns and its implications for pedestrian crash prevention.

INTRODUCTION: A pedestrian crash occurs due to a series of contributing factors taking effect in an antecedent-consequent order. One specific type of antecedent-consequent order is called a crash causation pattern. Understanding crash causation patterns is important for clarifying the complicated growth of a pedestrian crash, which ultimately helps recommend corresponding countermeasures. However, previous studies lack an in-depth investigation of pedestrian crash cases, and are insufficient to propose a representative picture of causation patterns. METHOD: In this study, pedestrian crash cau

Factors affecting public-supply well vulnerability in two karst aquifers.

Karst aquifers occur in a range of climatic and geologic settings. Nonetheless, they are commonly characterized by their vulnerability to water-quality impairment. Two karst aquifers, the Edwards aquifer in south-central Texas and the Upper Floridan aquifer in western Florida, were investigated to assess factors that control the movement of contaminants to public-supply wells (PSWs). The geochemistry of samples from a selected PSW or wellfield in each aquifer was compared with that from nearby monitoring wells and regional PSWs. Geochemistry results were integrated with age tracers, flow model…

Mortality due to a retained circle hook in a longfin mako shark Isurus paucus (Guitart-Manday).

A female longfin mako shark Isurus paucus (Guitart-Manday, 1966) was found moribund on the Atlantic Ocean beach near Canaveral National Seashore, Florida; the shark died shortly after stranding. Macroscopic lesions included a partially healed bite mark on the left pectoral fin, a clefted snout, pericardial effusion and a pericardial mass surrounding a 12/0 circle fishing hook. The heart, pericardial mass, gills, ovary, oviduct, shell gland, epigonal organ, liver, kidney and intrarenal and interrenal glands were processed for histopathology and examined by brightfield microscopy. Microscopic ex…

The organization of foraging in the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta.

Although natural selection in ants acts most strongly at the colony, or superorganismal level, foraging patterns have rarely been studied at that level, focusing instead on the behavior of individual foragers or groups of foragers. The experiments and observations in this paper reveal in broad strokes how colonies of the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), allocate their available labor to foraging, how they disperse that force within their territory, and how this force changes with colony size, season and worker age. Territory area is positively related to colony siz

Disease incidence is related to bleaching extent in reef-building corals.

Recent outbreaks of coral bleaching and disease have contributed to substantial declines in the abundance of reef-building coral. Significant attention has been paid to both phenomena in order to determine their effect on reef trajectories. Although each is positively correlated with high temperatures, few studies have explored the potential links between bleaching and disease. A longitudinal study of corals in the Florida Keys was therefore conducted during the 2005 Caribbean bleaching event to quantify bleaching extent and disease incidence in corals, and to determine whether they were relat…

A reevaluation of the cultural eutrophication of Lake Okeechobee using multiproxy sediment records.

Lake Okeechobee, the hydrological lynchpin of the Everglades ecosystem, is the subject of an ambitious, multiagency restoration effort aimed at reducing phosphorus inputs and resulting algal blooms and impaired water clarity. This restoration is predicated on returning the lake to something closer to its predisturbance condition, but that goal has been challenged on the premise that the lake has always been eutrophic. The resolution of this debate and the appropriateness of the nutrient reduction goals thus depend on obtaining a reliable sediment record of past limnological conditions--the aim

Poor replication of West Nile virus (New York 1999 strain) in three reptilian and one amphibian species.

Because West Nile (WN) virus primarily cycles between mosquitoes and birds, North American reptiles and amphibians have not been evaluated as reservoir hosts of this virus. We infected three species of reptiles and one species of amphibian: Iguana iguana (green iguana), Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis (Florida garter snake), Trachymes scripta elegans (red-ear slider), and Rana catesbeiana (North American bullfrog). After inoculation with WN virus, some of the green iguanas, bullfrogs, and garter snakes showed low but detectable viral loads in the blood, oral or cloacal swabs, and/or organs.

Speech therapy where there are no speech therapists: the task force for the american cleft palate-craniofacial association.

This paper describes the outcome of the 2013 American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association Task Force entitled "Speech Therapy Where There Are No Speech Therapists." The membership and goals of the initial task force are presented. Survey methods, communication of the members, and meeting discussion of the task force at the 12th International Congress for Craniofacial Anomalies in Orlando, Florida, in May 2013 are described. Conclusions of the task force and recommendations for the future comprised four areas: organization and communication, protocols, service delivery models, and development…

Time-dose relationships for local tumor control and complications following irradiation of squamous cell carcinoma of the base of tongue.

Between October 1964 and September 1981, 114 previously untreated patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the base of the tongue were treated with curative intent by a radical course of irradiation at the University of Florida. With a minimum 2-year follow-up, local control was achieved in 78, 65, 76, and 17% of T1, T2, T3, and T4 lesions, respectively. Control results could be correlated with time-dose factors and treatment techniques. No patient required mandibulectomy for osteoradionecrosis following radiation therapy. Complications of bone and soft tissue could not be related to time-dose…
