Coil Intrabronchial Migration in an Arteriovenous Malformation Patient Treated 10 Years Ago.

A 56-year-old male who had received transcatheter coil deposition 10 years ago for an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) was admitted to our hospital because of persistent hemosputum. Chest radiograph and bronchoscopy revealed straightened coil bundles in his air way. Recently, less invasive transcatheter intervention has been performed more frequently for treatment of AVM than surgical resection. In our case, however, chest radiography and bronchoscopy showed that the coils might migrate from the deposited site to the airway. Then, right lower lobectomy was undertaken. In AVM patient who receiv

Removal of dental implant displaced into maxillary sinus by combination of endoscopically assisted and bone repositioning techniques: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Accidental displacement of a dental implant into the maxillary sinus is an infrequent although not uncommon complication encountered in dental clinical practice, with the main cause thought to be inadequate bone height in the posterior maxilla. We report a case of migration of a dental implant into the maxillary sinus, and discuss the benefits of its removal by a combination of endoscopically assisted and bone repositioning techniques. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old Japanese man with a partially edentulous maxilla underwent implant placement at a private clinic. Three months lat

Migration of a Central Venous Catheter in a Hemodialysis Patient Resulted in Left Atrial Perforation and Thrombus Formation Requiring Open Heart Surgery.

Central venous catheterization is widely used in patients on hemodialysis. A rare complication associated with the clinical use of central venous catheters is perforation of the heart or major vessels. We report a case of inadvertent perforation of the left atrium and thrombosis after the placement of a hemodialysis catheter in the right internal jugular vein. In such cases, surgical removal of the central venous catheter from perforation sites in the heart and vessel walls poses anesthetic challenges because of the high risk of pneumothorax, hemorrhage, arrhythmias, thrombosis, and death.

Bladder calculus resulting from an intravesical translocation of intrauterine contraceptive device in a postmenopausal woman.

Although perforation of the uterus by an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) is commonly encountered, intravesical translocation and secondary calculus formation is a very rare complication. We report a case of a 60-year old multiparous woman in whom an intrauterine contraceptive Copper-T device inserted 12 years earlier translocated from the uterus to the bladder and resulted in formation of a calculus. Diagnosis was established with pelvic ultrasonography and plain abdominal radiograph. The cystoscopic removal was not successful due to the large size of the calculus. The patient later u

Spontaneous urinary voiding of metallic screws in a patient with symphyseal plating for type II pelvic ring disruption.

With rapid advancement in surgical techniques and improvement in implant materials, rate of internal fixation for pubic symphyseal disruption in rotationally and vertically unstable pelvic ring injuries has increased. Among various modes of implant failure, screw/plate breakage and loosening are common complications following unstable fixation. Migration of loose screws into the urinary bladder has been reported as an extremely uncommon complication of pubic symphyseal plating. Here we present a case report of a 52-year-old female who presented with asymptomatic passage of screws in her urine

Pancreatic stent migration into the portal vein causing portal vein thrombosis: a rare complication of a prophylactic pancreatic stent.

This report describes the first case of a novel complication of prophylactic pancreatic stents used to reduce the risk of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis, whereby the stent migrated into the portal vein resulting in portal vein thrombosis. We review the literature and discuss the potential mechanisms that caused this complication. The approach and prompt treatment that resulted in a favorable clinical outcome are described.

Migration of vessel clip into the common bile duct and late formation of choledocholithiasis after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Since the first silk suture material acting as a nidus for the development of subsequent common bile duct stones after cholecystectomy was described in 1897, several investigators have reported that suture materials may cause choledocholithiasis. Silk, chromic catgut, parasites, and other foreign bodies are known occasionally to form such niduses in the common bile duct. Surgical hemostatic clips have been used widely and generally are considered very safe. The first case of postcholecystectomy clip migration was reported in 1979. Its exact pathogenesis remains unknown; it generally is agreed

Imaging of the complications of peripherally inserted central venous catheters.

Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) are widely used to provide central venous access, often in chronically ill patients with long-term intravenous access requirements. There are a number of significant complications related to both insertion and maintenance of PICC lines, including catheter malposition, migration, venous thrombosis, and line fracture. The incidence of these complications is likely to rise as the number of patients undergoing intravenous outpatient therapy increases, with a corresponding rise in radiologist input. This paper provides an overview of the relevant perip

[New techniques to extract impacted partially covered metallic biliary stents].

One of the problems affecting metallic biliary stents is the difficulty of removing them, especially after a period of months or if they have migrated. Several approaches have been used to remove both covered and uncovered stents, although with different degrees of effectiveness. We report two new approaches to removing partially covered stents that migrated proximally and that impacted in the papillary area and distal common bile duct. One stent was removed by papillectomy and the other by using duodenoscopy-guided controlled radial expansion balloon dilation. In both cases, the stents were r

Lipoid pneumonia: an uncommon entity.

Lipoid pneumonia is a rare form of pneumonia caused by inhalation or aspiration of fat-containing substances like petroleum jelly, mineral oils, certain laxatives, etc. It usually presents as an insidious onset, chronic respiratory illness simulating interstitial lung diseases. Rarely, it may present as an acute respiratory illness, especially when the exposure to fatty substance(s) is massive. Radiological findings are diverse and can mimic many other diseases including carcinoma, acute or chronic pneumonia, ARDS, or a localized granuloma. Pathologically it is a chronic foreign body reaction

Delayed migration of a self-expanding intracranial microstent.

A 43-year-old patient with a basilar apex aneurysm had a 4.5-mm x 14-mm Enterprise stent placed from the midbasilar artery to the left P1 segment of the posterior cerebral artery. The patient experienced vertigo 4 months after stent placement and 1 week after stopping clopidogrel. At 5 months postembolization, angiography showed stent migration into the proximal basilar artery. This is the first described case of the spontaneous delayed migration of a self-expanding intracranial microstent.
