OBJECTIVES: Appropriate visualization of the femoral neck is critical when performing open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of a femoral neck fracture. The purpose of this study was to objectively identify which surgical approach provided the most extensive visualization of the femoral neck during ORIF. Our hypothesis was that the Smith-Petersen approach with rectus release would provide the most extensive visualization.
METHODS: Ten cadaveric hips were utilized to compare 4 different surgical approaches to the femoral neck: Smith-Petersen (SP), Smith-Petersen with rectus release (SPwR)

BACKGROUND: Mandibular angle fractures are common and frequently involve a tooth in the fracture line. Despite trends toward more conservative indications for tooth extraction during open repair, the literature remains heterogeneous. This review aims to ascertain the effect of tooth extraction/retention on patient outcomes following mandible open reduction and internal fixation and to evaluate the evidence surrounding indications for extraction.
METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Elsevier text mining tool database, and clinicaltrials.gov were queried through March of 2018 for Engl

Internal fixation is a common orthopedic procedure in which a rigid screw is used to fix fragments of a fractured bone together and expedite the healing process. However, the rigidity of the screw, geometry of the fractured anatomy (e.g. femur and pelvis), and patient's age can cause an array of complications during screw placement, such as improper fracture healing due to misalignment of the bone fragments, lengthy procedure time and subsequently high radiation exposure. To address these issues, we propose a minimally invasive robot-assisted procedure comprising of a continuum robot, called o

BACKGROUND: The coracoid process plays an important role in maintaining the stability of the elbow joint. A fracture of the coronoid process is often treated via surgical approaches, including open reduction and internal fixation, which aim to regain a stable, flexible, and loadable joint. In this study, we compared the anterior, medial, and posterior approaches of internal fixation in the repair of fractures of the coronoid process of the ulna.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, 147 patients with fractures in the coronoid process of the ulna were recruited and classified into the anterior

Calcaneal fractures, often caused by a fall from a height, are the most common injuries encountered by orthopedic surgeons. Currently, open anatomic reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is considered a valuable treatment of displaced intraarticular fractures of the calcaneus; however, the need for bone grafting in the treatment is still controversial. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated the outcomes of 2 methods (with and without bone grafting) used for the surgical treatment of Sanders type III calcaneal fractures. From January 2013 to September 2015, 57 cases (55 patients) wit

Long-term bisphosphonate use has been suggested to result in decreased bone remodelling and an increased risk of atypical fractures. Fractures of this nature commonly occur in the femur, and relatively few reports exist to show that they occur in other bones. Among eight previous reports of atypical ulnar fractures associated with bisphosphonate use, one report described nonunion in a patient who was treated with cast immobilization and another described ulna nonunion in one of three patients, all of whom were treated surgically with a locking plate. The remaining two surgical patients achieve

BACKGROUND: Several factors are known to influence osseous union of femoral neck fractures. Numerous clinical studies have reported different results, hence with different recommendations regarding treatment of Pauwels III fractures: femoral neck fractures with a more vertically oriented fracture line. The current study aimed to analyze biomechanically whether this fracture poses a higher risk of nonunion.
OBJECTIVES: To analyze the influence of one designated factor, authors believe that a computerized fracture model, using a finite element Finite Element Method (FEM), may be essential to ne
