Otorhinolaryngological procedures in the fifteenth century in Anatolia.

The author of one of the earliest surgical books was Serefettin Sabuncuoğlu (AD 1385 to 1468?). He is the author of Cerrahiyyetül-Haniyye (Imperial Surgery), which was written in 1465. This book contains miniatures of surgical procedures, and there were many important and major new contributions to the surgical literature originally described by Sabuncuoğlu himself. He described surgical management of nasal polyposis, nasal fracture, facial palsy, mandibular fracture and dislocation, hoarseness and constriction of the breath, tumors of the tonsil and uvula, laryngeal tumors, and goiter. [Clause Pouteau (1725-1775), surgeon at the l'Hôtel-Dieu de Lyon: his "asepsis" using water, fire and ligne propre].

Claude Pouteau, Hôtel-Dieu de Lyon's surgeon (1725-1775), did not improve surgical teaching, as Mareschal or Lapeyronie did with their reforming law. But he is reminiscent of an extremely skilful surgeon, always having a remarkable high rate of recoveries. For instance when it came to operate on bladder with a perineal approach (vesical cut), only three patients died out of one hundred and twenty operations. One century before Semmelweiss and more earlier than Pasteur, Pouteau thought that hospital-gangrene was not only caused by air miasma but also by direct contact, which could be indebted d

[Surgery in the last 40 years: looking back in wonder].

Much has changed in surgery in the last 40 years: From the fifties, new findings were introduced, such as antibiotics, anticoagulants, cytostatics, cardiac and pulmonary surgery, artificial respiration, osteosynthesis, arteriography, synthetic fibres and image intensifying in the clinic. The average hospital stay in the surgical ward used to be 21 days, mortality 6-7%. Owing to the long hospital stays, nurses, physicians and interns grew familiar with the pre- and postoperative courses. In the sixties, reconstructive vascular surgery became possible, where earlier limbs had to be amputated. Th

Time trends in peptic ulcer surgery, 1956 to 1986. A nation-wide survey in Sweden.

To establish time trends in surgical rates for peptic ulcer disease, all surgical departments in Sweden were requested to complete a questionnaire regarding elective operations for gastric and duodenal ulcers and emergency operations for ulcer perforations performed in 1956, 1966, 1976, and 1986. A total of 8558 operations were reported for these years. The incidence of elective surgery declined steadily, the rates being 72.1, 45.0, 31.9, and 10.7 per 100,000 inhabitants. The male:female ratio fell from 4.2 to 1.5:1, while the duodenal/gastric ulcer ratio remained virtually unchanged. The oper

Robert E. Gross.

Born in 1905, Gross graduated with honors from Carleton College and the Harvard Medical School. After spending 2 years in pathology, he entered his surgical training at the Peter Brent Brigham Hospital and at the Boston Children's Hospital with Dr. William E. After 3 years of basic training with a wide variety of surgical problems in both adults and children, he decided to devote his considerable talents toward solving some of the problems of children with congenital malformations. After having returned to Harvard to

A Proposed Personalized Spine Care Protocol (SpineScreen) to Treat Visualized Pain Generators: An Illustrative Study Comparing Clinical Outcomes and Postoperative Reoperations between Targeted Endoscopic Lumbar Decompression Surgery, Minimally Invasive TLIF and Open Laminectomy.

Background: Endoscopically visualized spine surgery has become an essential tool that aids in identifying and treating anatomical spine pathologies that are not well demonstrated by traditional advanced imaging, including MRI. These pathologies may be visualized during endoscopic lumbar decompression (ELD) and categorized into primary pain generators (PPG). Identifying these PPGs provides crucial information for a successful outcome with ELD and forms the basis for our proposed personalized spine care protocol (SpineScreen). Methods: a prospective study of 412 patients from 7 endoscopic practi

William Arbuthnot Lane (1856-1943): Surgical Innovator and His Theory of Autointoxication.

William Arbuthnot Lane contributed to the advancement of many fields of orthopedics, otolaryngology, and general surgery. He is credited for his "no-touch technique" and the invention of long-handled instruments, some of which are still in use today, to minimize tissue handling. He is most well known for his hypothesis that slowing of gastric contents could cause a variety of ailments and this became known as Lane's disease. Although his surgical treatment of Lane's disease is now defunct, it advanced the surgical technique in colorectal surgery. It seems likely that some of Lane's "autointoxi…

Can American Board of Surgery in Training Examinations be passed by Large Language Models? Comparative assessment of Gemini, Copilot, and ChatGPT.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate the performance of large language models (LLMs) in answering questions from the American Board of Surgery In-Training Examination (ABSITE).MethodsMultiple choice ABSITE Quiz was entered into the most popular LLMs as prompts. ChatGPT-4 (OpenAI), Copilot (Microsoft), and Gemini (Google) were used in the study. The research comprised 170 questions from 2017 to 2022, which were divided into four subgroups: Definitions, Biochemistry/Pharmaceutical, Case Scenario, and Treatment & Surgical Procedures. All questions were queried in LLMs, between October 1, 2024, a

How Should Ongoing Surgical Care Needs be Met During Global Health Engagements?

The Department of Defense has a long history of Global Health Engagement, beginning with identifying and developing vaccines for yellow fever, influenzae, and malaria. Contemporary examples of global health engagement include the worldwide deployment of military assets to aid in natural disasters, and deployment of ship and land based medical teams for short-term medical and surgical engagements. In 2017, the Department of Defense Instruction on Global Health Engagement was published to help guide these efforts. Surgery is an indispensable part of global health and presents unique ethical chal

[Surgeon, Musician and Friend of Brahms: Theodor Billroth (1829-1894)].

Christian Albert Theodor Billroth (1829-1894) is primarily known as a pioneer of modern surgery among medical professionals today. During his entire life, however, he was also very musically inclined and was at the center of musical life wherever he worked. As a student, he was an active member of Göttingen University's musical circles, later he wrote concert reviews and organized private concerts in his home. In late 1865, he invited the composer and pianist Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) to such a soiree in Zurich. Henceforth, Brahms appreciated the surgeon as a correspondent on an equal footin
