Evaluation of the evolutionary genetics and population structure of Culex pipiens pallens in Shandong province, China based on knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations and the mtDNA-COI gene.

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes are important vectors for a range of diseases, contributing to high rates of morbidity and mortality in the human population. Culex pipiens pallens is dominant species of Culex mosquito in northern China and a major vector for both West Nile virus and Bancroftian filariasis. Insecticide application were largely applied to control the mosquito-mediated spread of these diseases, contributing to increasing rates of resistance in the mosquito population. The voltage-gated sodium channel (Vgsc) gene is the target site of pyrethroids, and mutations in this gene cause knockdown

Ethnicity and genetics are more important than diabetes mellitus and hypertension in producing cardiovascular events in patients with the metabolic syndrome: emphasis in the Puerto Rico population.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors for cardiovascular disease that affects an estimated 50 million Americans. The present article reviews the metabolic syndrome with respect to its definition, epidemiology, pathophysiology and management. A primary focus in research has been to elucidate the processes determined to cause insulin resistance, the fundamental mechanism underlying the metabolic syndrome. Namely, the incidence, component characteristics and complications of the metabolic syndrome in the island of Puerto Rico are described alongside the fact that the metabolic syndrome

Genetic analysis of bed bug populations reveals small propagule size within individual infestations but high genetic diversity across infestations from the eastern United States.

Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius L.) are a resurgent pest worldwide and infestations within the United States are increasing at a rapid rate. Because of the physical and psychological discomfort inflicted by their blood feeding habits, and allergies and secondary infections associated with bites, bed bugs are recognized as a significant public health problem. Although bed bug infestations are spreading and becoming more prevalent, we have a poor understanding of their dispersal patterns and sources of infestation. To help fill this gap, we conducted a genetic study of 21 bed bug infestations from t

The load of genetic and partially genetic diseases in man. II. Some selected common multifactorial diseases: estimates of population prevalence and of detriment in terms of years of lost and impaired life.

This paper presents epidemiological data on the prevalence of 26 common (i.e., having a lifetime prevalence of more than 1 per 10(4) individuals in the population) multifactorial diseases in Hungary and estimates of detriment associated with them. The detriment is expressed using 3 indicators, namely years of lost life (LL), potentially impaired life (PIL) and actually impaired life (AIL). The total prevalence of these diseases in Hungary has been estimated to be about 6500 per 10(4) individuals in the population. This estimate is in agreement with published data for other parts of the world.

Population genetic structure and evolutionary genetics of Anopheles sinensis based on knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations and mtDNA-COII gene in China-Laos, Thailand-Laos, and Cambodia-Laos borders.

BACKGROUND: Vector control is still a pivotal method for preventing malaria, and its potency is weakened by the increasing resistance of vectors to chemical insecticides. As the most abundant and vital malaria vector in Southeast Asia, the chemical insecticide resistance status in Anopheles sinensis remains elusive in Laos, which makes it imperative to evaluate the true nature of chemical insecticide resistance-associated genetic mutations in An. sinensis in Laos. METHODS: Adult An. sinensis were collected from three border regions in Laos. DNA was extracted from individual mosquitoes. PCR am

Seasonal fluctuation in susceptibility to insecticides within natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster. II. Features of genetic variation in susceptibility to organophosphate insecticides within natural populations of D. melanogaster.

To elucidate genetic variation in susceptibility to organophosphate insecticides within natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster, we conducted an analysis of variance for mortality data sets of isofemale lines (10-286 lines) used in the previous studies. Susceptibility of isofemale lines to the three organophosphate insecticides was continuously distributed within each natural population, ranging from susceptible to resistant. Analysis of variance showed highly significant variation among isofemale lines in susceptibility to each insecticide for each natural population. Significant genet

Seasonal Variation of Essential Oils Composition in a Genetically Diverse Population of Lippia alba and Its Influence on Antibacterial Activity.

Lippia alba is an aromatic plant whose essential oils (EOs) have been characterized as promising antimicrobial agents. It has been established that L. alba chemotypes are influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. We evaluated the EO yield, composition, and antimicrobial activity of 20 genotypes from a sympatric genetically diverse population of L. alba. These analyses were performed over two seasonal periods, during which climate data were collected and leaf nutrients assessed. EO yield was highest on average during summer, although genotype-specific patterns were observed. Gas chr

Inference of Genetic Structure and the Process of Population Formation in Nepalese Native Goats Using Uniparental and Genome-Wide Markers.

Nepal is a small, landlocked country with marked elevational variation from the Terai plains to the Himalayas. Here, four indigenous goat populations (Chyangra, Sinhal, Khari, and Terai) are raised at different elevations. This study aimed to clarify the genetic structure of these populations and how they are formed and propagated across the Himalayan region. We analyzed 136 Nepalese goats using mitochondrial (mt) DNA D-loop and sex-determining region Y (SRY) 3'-untranslated region (UTR) sequences, as well as 50 K SNP array data. The mtDNA haplogroups D (0.162) and G (0.03) were detected only

Mapping Genetic Modifiers of Polyp Formation in Smad4-Deficient Juvenile Polyposis Using the Collaborative Cross Mouse Population.

Juvenile Polyposis Syndrome (JPS) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by multiple gastrointestinal polyps and an increased risk of cancer, most commonly associated with mutations in the tumor suppressor gene Smad4. However, substantial phenotypic variability exists among individuals carrying identical mutations, suggesting the presence of genetic modifiers. In this study, we used the genetically diverse Collaborative Cross (CC) mouse population crossed with Smad4 knockout mice to identify loci influencing intestinal polyp development. A cohort of 260 F1 mice derived from 14 CC line

ITS-Supported Species Discrimination and ISSR-Based Genetic Diversity and Population Differentiation of Lumnitzera littorea in Southern Vietnam.

Lumnitzera littorea is a rare, conservation-relevant mangrove tree with discontinuous records in southern Vietnam, but population-level genetic evidence remains limited. This study combined nuclear rDNA ITS and ISSR markers to distinguish species-level support from population-level comparisons. Can Gio was treated as the focal population, while Dong Nai, Phu Quoc, and Con Dao were used as comparison populations. The 16 study-generated ITS sequences, deposited as PZ348213-PZ348228, supported species-level separation between L. littorea and L. racemosa, with a between-species p-distance of 0.045

Genome-Wide Characterization of Genetic Diversity and Population Structure in a Kazakhstani Two-Row Spring Barley Breeding Panel.

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is a major cereal in Kazakhstan, where diverse breeding material supports crop improvement. We characterized 86 two-row spring barley accessions from six breeding organizations using the Illumina Infinium 50K Barley SNP Array. Analysis of 29,920 high-quality SNPs revealed moderate diversity (He = 0.346, PIC = 0.278, Shannon = 0.752), with 80.84% of molecular variation occurring within and 19.16% among breeding organizations. A minor allele frequency-free (MAF-free) analysis showed that 95.61% of marker-allele combinations at polymorphic loci were shared by at least
