Coastal aquaculture regulates phosphorus cycling in estuarine wetlands: Mobilization, kinetic resupply, and source-sink process.

Estuarine mangrove wetlands have gradually declined owing to the growing construction of aquaculture ponds. How the speciation, transition, and migration of phosphorus (P) adaptively change in the sediments of this pond-wetland ecosystem remains unclear. In this study, we used high-resolution devices to explore the contrasting P behaviors associated with the redox cycles of Fe-Mn-S-As in estuarine and pond sediments. The results showed that the construction of aquaculture ponds increased the content or percentage of the silt, organic carbon, and P fractions in sediments. Dissolved organic P (D

The consequences of reduced anthropogenic activities during the COVID-19 pandemic on microplastic abundance in a tropical estuarine region: Goa, India.

Plastic pollution is pervasive, as it has infiltrated every corner of the planet and the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a depletion in the production, consumption, and disposal of plastics. To find out the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, a comparative assessment of microplastics (MPs) observed before and after the pandemic was evaluated in surface water and sediment from the major rivers of Goa, i.e. Mandovi and Zuari. To comprehend the relative difference in the abundance, characteristics, and source of MPs, samples were examined in both the dry and wet seasons. We found a sharp decrease in th

Assessment of seasonal variation in distribution, source identification, and risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated sediment of Ikpoba River, South-South Nigeria.

The study aims to assess the seasonal variation in distribution, source identification, and risk of 20 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (20 PAHs) in the sediment of the Ikpoba River, south-south Nigeria. The PAHs were extracted in an ultrasonic bath with a mixture of n-hexane and dichloromethane (1:1 v/v). The extract was cleaned by silica-alumina gel mixed with anhydrous Na2SO4 in a chromatography column, eluted by n-hexane, and analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The range of the average PAHs in mg.kg-dw was 0.15 (Nap)-0.54 (Acy) and 0.13 (D.al.P)-0.99 (Acy) in wet and dry peri

Responses of the structure and function of microbes in Yellow River Estuary sediments to different levels of mercury.

The health and stability of the estuary of the Yellow River ecosystem have come under increasing pressure from land-based inputs of heavy metals. While it is known that heavy metals affect the function and health of the microbial community, there remains little knowledge on the responses of the microbial community to heavy metals, particularly highly toxic mercury. The research aimed to characterize the responses of the sediment microbial community of the estuary of the Yellow River to different levels of mercury stress. Estuary sediment samples were collected for microbial community analysis,

Microbial bioremediation of produced water under different redox conditions in marine sediments.

The discharge of produced water from offshore oil platforms is an emerging concern due to its potential adverse effects on marine ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the feasibility and capability of using marine sediments for the bioremediation of produced water. We utilized a combination of porewater and solid phase analysis in a series of sediment batch incubations amended with produced water and synthetic produced water to determine the biodegradation of hydrocarbons under different redox conditions. Significant removal of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) compounds w

Detailing the organic matter in suspended sediments as a tool to assess the impact of land occupation in water bodies: a case of Barigui Watershed (Southern Brazil).

Suspended sediments were collected to examine the organic carbon content and n-alkanes in order to assess the impact on water bodies caused by soil and land occupation. For this, samples from distinct areas based on the level of land occupation of the Barigui Watershed and different areas under the influence of human activities were examined. The number of industries increasing along the river was also considered. Twenty-two sediment samples were collected using a time-integrated sediment sampler. Samples were extracted with dichloromethane:methanol (DCM:methanol) (2:1) in an ultrasound bath,

[Distribution and Potential Ecological Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Sediments of Lake Qinghai].

Lake Qinghai is the largest closed saltwater lake in China. In recent years, because of the rapid development of industry, agriculture, and tourism, the lake has been increasingly affected by human activities, which has attracted the attention of many scholars. In order to understand the distribution of heavy metals in the surface sediments of Lake Qinghai, the contents of Zn, Cu, Pb, Co, Ni, As, Cd, and Cr were investigated, the metal fractions were extracted, and the sources, as well as potential ecological risks, were analyzed. The results showed that:① the ω(As) (13.21 mg·kg-1) and ω(Cd) (

Revealing the full biosphere structure and versatile metabolic functions in the deepest ocean sediment of the Challenger Deep.

BACKGROUND: The full biosphere structure and functional exploration of the microbial communities of the Challenger Deep of the Mariana Trench, the deepest known hadal zone on Earth, lag far behind that of other marine realms. RESULTS: We adopt a deep metagenomics approach to investigate the microbiome in the sediment of Challenger Deep, Mariana Trench. We construct 178 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) representing 26 phyla, 16 of which are reported from hadal sediment for the first time. Based on the MAGs, we find the microbial community functions are marked by enrichment and prevalence of

Water resources pollution associated with risks of heavy metals from Vatukoula Goldmine region, Fiji.

Although mining is essential for human economic development, is amongst the most polluting anthropogenic sources that influence seriously in water resources. Thus, understanding the presence and concentration of heavy metals in water and sediment in the vicinity of mines is important for the sustainability of the ecosystem. In this work, a multidisciplinary approach was developed to characterize the contamination level, source apportionment, co-existence, and degree of ecological and human health risks of HMs on water resources in the Vatukoula Goldmine region (VGR), Fiji. The outcomes suggest

Production of methylmercury by methanogens in mercury contaminated estuarine sediments.

Anaerobic bacteria are known to produce neurotoxic methylmercury [MeHg] when elemental mercury [Hg(0)] is provided as the sole mercury source. In this study, we examined the formation of MeHg in anaerobic incubations of sediment collected from the San Jacinto River estuary (Texas, USA) amended with aqueous Hg(0) to investigate the microbial communities involved in the conversion of Hg(0) to MeHg. The results show that the addition of the methanogen inhibitor 2-bromoethanesulfonate (BES) significantly decreased MeHg production. The mercury methylation gene, hgcA, was detected in these sediments

Particle-water interactions of bismuth under simulated estuarine conditions.

Although the production and usage of bismuth (Bi) have been increasing, very little is known about the environmental behaviour of this heavy metal. In the present study, the particle-water interactions of Bi are examined under controlled conditions in which the metal is added as a tracer to estuarine sediment suspended in different, environmentally-relevant aqueous solutions. Adsorption isotherms were always linear over the Bi concentration range employed (up to 2000 μg L-1) and sediment-water distribution coefficients derived from isotherm gradients, KD (L kg-1), displayed an inverse dependen

Coincidence of photic zone euxinia and impoverishment of arthropods in the aftermath of the Frasnian-Famennian biotic crisis.

The lowermost Famennian deposits of the Kowala quarry (Holy Cross Mountains, Poland) are becoming famous for their rich fossil content such as their abundant phosphatized arthropod remains (mostly thylacocephalans). Here, for the first time, palaeontological and geochemical data were integrated to document abundance and diversity patterns in the context of palaeoenvironmental changes. During deposition, the generally oxic to suboxic conditions were interrupted at least twice by the onset of photic zone euxinia (PZE). Previously, PZE was considered as essential in preserving phosphatised fossil

Sources and drivers of contamination along an urban tropical river (Ciliwung, Indonesia): Insights from microbial DNA, isotopes and water chemistry.

Wastewater treatment infrastructure is lacking in many developing countries, often resulting in high loads of contaminants discharged to urban rivers. In these countries, targeted pollution mitigation requires an understanding of where, how and when contaminants enter water bodies. Here we report on contamination of the Ciliwung River, a dynamic, tropical system flowing through the Jakarta metropolitan area (Indonesia). We measured a set of isotopic, chemical and microbial tracers in representative water and contamination sources, as well as longitudinally within the river, to assess the spati

Sediment organic carbon and temperature effects on methylmercury concentration: A mesocosm experiment.

The fate and mobility of mercury, and its bioaccumulation primarily as methylmercury (MeHg), in marine ecosystems are influenced by climate related environmental factors, including increased temperature and carbon loading. To investigate the interactions between sediment organic carbon and temperature MeHg bioaccumulation, mesocosm experiments were conducted examining relationships between sediment, water column and biota (sediment-dwelling amphipod and juvenile oyster) MeHg concentration. Experimental treatments consisted of a two by two design of high and low temperature (15 & 25 °C) and hig

Salinity and redox conditions affect the methyl mercury formation in sediment of Suaeda heteroptera wetlands of Liaoning province, Northeast China.

Using a laboratory simulation experiment, we studied the trend of change in methylmercury (MeHg) content of sediments in response to the changing salinity of flooding water (deionized water, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0%) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) content for both the surface layer (0-10 cm) and the bottom layer (10-20 cm) of Suaeda heteroptera wetland sediments in the Liaohe estuary under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, respectively. The results showed that under AAC (anaerobic conditions), the MeHg content in the surface and bottom sediment layers increased first and then decreased

Evaluation of trace metals in seawater, sediments, and bivalves of Nellore, southeast coast of India, by using multivariate and ecological tool.

Urbanization in recent years has driven us to investigate metal contamination on Nellore coast by collecting seawater, sediment, and bivalve samples monthly at five stations from 2015 to 2017. Non-metric multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis indicated that open sea (OS) samples were markedly different from the samples collected at other stations. Strong factor loadings of Al (0.76), Mn (0.79), and Cd (0.78) showed variability in seawater, while those for Fe (0.76), Ni (0.77), Zn (0.85), and Pb (0.81) showed variability in sediment. The mean values of Fe (346 ppm) and Mn (21 ppm) were h

Ecological thresholds of hypoxia and sedimentary H2S in coastal soft-bottom habitats: A macroinvertebrate-based assessment.

Ecological thresholds of dissolved oxygen (DO) and sedimentary hydrogen sulfide (H2S) for macrozoobenthos were examined during a 30-month monitoring of two stations in a highly eutrophic canal in inner Tokyo Bay, Japan. Bottom DO and H2S concentrations fluctuated seasonally, and were significantly correlated with water and sediment temperatures. Red tide-derived phytodetritus was a major source of sediment organic matters in the canal bottom, and the sediment became highly reduced and sulfidic condition in warmer months (sedimentary H2S; up to 8.5 mM). Dominant opportunistic taxa, including po

Denitrification Capacity of a Natural and a Restored Marsh in the Northern Gulf of Mexico.

Anthropogenic pressures, such as diking, construction of dams, and oil spills negatively impact coastal marshes creating growing pressure to preserve and to restore salt marshes due to their critical role in permanently removing nitrate runoff through denitrification as well as other ecosystem services they provide. This study determined denitrification rates across a typical northern Gulf of Mexico salt marsh landscape that included a natural marsh, a tidal creek, and a 21-year-old restored salt marsh. Denitrification capacity, measured with the isotope pairing technique on a membrane inlet m
