An Exploratory Investigation into the Effects of Methanol and Ethylene Glycol on the Growth and Development of Medaka (Oryzias melastigma) and Yellowstripe Goby (Mugilogobius chulae).

This study aimed to investigate the acute and chronic toxic effects of two thermodynamic inhibitors (methanol and ethylene glycol) widely used in deep-sea oil and gas operations on two typical marine fish species, the medaka (Oryzias melastigma) and the yellowstripe goby (Mugilogobius chulae), to assess their potential ecological risks in marine environments. The 96-h median lethal concentration (LC50) was determined through acute toxicity tests. A 56-day chronic toxicity test was conducted to evaluate the effects on fish growth (body length) and the antioxidant defense system, specifically th

A multifunctional electrode interface: A hybrid hexanethiol and polyethylene glycol monolayer for concurrent anti-fouling, stability, and ultrasensitive detection of ochratoxin A.

Integrating antifouling capability, operational stability, and high sensitivity into electrochemical biosensors in a simple and cost-effective manner remains a significant challenge. Herein, we present a multifunctional biointerface based on a hybrid hexanethiol and polyethylene glycol (HT-PEG) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) that concurrently addresses these requirements. The PEG component provides excellent antifouling properties through steric exclusion and hydration effects, while also serving as a dynamic host for spontaneous immobilization of pyrene-modified DNA probes (Py-DNA) via adapti

Poly(lactic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol) asymmetric membranes with enhanced hemocompatibility and gas exchange performance for artificial oxygenation.

The biomedical application of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) remains largely unexplored. Herein, a PLA-PEG block copolymer membrane with an optimized composition was specifically engineered for ECMO applications. The membrane exhibited markedly enhanced surface hydrophilicity (water contact angle of 57.5°) while maintaining robust mechanical properties (tensile strength of ~12 MPa and elongation at break of ~37%). Most importantly, it demonstrated substantially improved hemocompatibility, with an ~60% reduction in dynamic plasma protein adsorption compare

Carboxymethyl chitosan/sodium alginate/polyethylene glycol phase-change foams with humidity-adaptive low-temperature buffering performance.

The performance deterioration of phase-change composites in humid environments severely restricts their practical applications. Herein, A novel polysaccharide-based foam with low-temperature buffering properties was fabricated through electrostatic self-assembly of carboxymethyl chitosan and sodium alginate combined with mechanical foaming. This composite process enables the encapsulation of polyethylene glycol while simultaneously stabilizing the foam structure generated by mechanical agitation. Remarkably, without any hydrophobic modification, the phase-change foam exhibits long-term structu

Reactant-Sustained Dynamically Stable Interfacial Hydrogen-Bond Network for Highly Selective, Ampere-Level Ethylene Glycol Electrooxidation.

The catalyst-electrolyte interfacial microenvironment fundamentally governs the activity and selectivity of electrochemical reactions. However, engineering a dynamically stable interface capable of sustaining continuous reactant delivery and facilitating proton-coupled electron transfer remains challenging, particularly under ampere-level current densities. Herein, a reactant-enhanced hydrogen-bond network constructed on an ultrathin metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived electrocatalyst (Co-PET@NF) enables highly selective ethylene glycol electrooxidation (EGOR). Mechanistic investigations rev

Cell-Mimetic Antifouling Poly(ethylene glycol) Interface Enables Selective Capture and Viable Release of Circulating Tumor Cells.

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) hold great promise as biomarkers for cancer diagnosis, metastasis assessment, and therapeutic monitoring. However, their extremely low abundance and interference from complex blood components make their efficient and specific isolation highly challenging. Herein, we developed a reduction-responsive, antifouling, and cell-mimicking silica-patterned platform functionalized with bispecific antibodies (BsAbs, anti-PEG scFv, and anti-HER2 scFv) for selective CTC capture. The PEG-modified surface effectively suppressed nonspecific adhesion of immune cells, while the Bs

Preparation and characterization of self-healing nanocomposite hydrogels based on chitosan/polyethylene glycol/bacterial nanocellulose for wound dressing applications.

Hydrogels used for wound dressing applications often suffer from limited mechanical stability and insufficient self-repair capability, which restricts their long-term performance in dynamic physiological environments. This research aimed to prepare self-healing nanocomposite hydrogels based on chitosan, polyethylene glycol (PEG), and bacterial nanocellulose (BNC). For this purpose, PEG was first modified by an aldehyde agent, resulting in benzaldehyde-functionalized PEG (BM-PEG), to deliver bonding potential with the amine groups of chitosan. Nanocomposite hydrogels were then prepared by vorte

Poly(sulfobetaine-co-oligoethylene Glycol Methyl Ether Methacrylate) Copolymers with Improved Anti-Fouling and Anti-Coagulant Properties.

Zwitterionic polymers such as poly(sulfobetaines) and polyether polymers such as poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) have both been reported as effective antifouling materials for various biomedical applications based on their high-water-binding capacities through hydrogen bonding (PEG) or ion-dipole interactions (zwitterionic polymers). Herein, to assess whether synergistic antifouling properties can be achieved when poly(sulfobetaine) and PEG moieties are combined into a single polymer, linear copolymers were fabricated by the chain transfer radical copolymerization of [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] di

Functional oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate copolymers enabling combined thermal and photocrosslinking for additive manufacturing of thermoresponsive soft biomaterials.

Thermogelling materials are attractive candidates for advanced biofabrication and 4D printing. However, achieving materials that combine reversible thermal responsiveness with sufficient mechanical stability and compatibility with multiple additive manufacturing techniques remains an important challenge. To address this limitation, we synthesized POEGMA-based diblock copolymers with pendant amine groups, capable of temperature-induced physical gelation with additional chemical crosslinking to produce structurally stable inks for advanced printing applications. The diblock copolymers (P(A(+)O)-

Phenylacetylcarbinol biotransformation by disrupted yeast cells using ultrasonic treatment in conjunction with a dipropylene glycol mediated biphasic emulsion system.

Biotransformation of a pharmaceutical precursor, phenylacetylcarbinol (PAC), could be achieved by frozen-thawed Candida tropicalis whole cells (FT-WHC). The treatment of FT-WHC, which contained intracellular pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC) enzyme, using high-power ultrasonication with varying amplitudes were compared with glass bead attrition (GBA) as well as control for the release of PDC. Ultrasonication at 20% amplitude (Ult20) proved to be the most effective, resulting in the highest volumetric and specific PDC activities of 0.210 ± 0.004 U/mL and 0.335 ± 0.033 U/mg protein, respectively.
